There are two organised club sessions during the week. The table below shows when the training starts and where we meet. The sessions are suitable for runners of all abilities. Those who are not in a hurry or just want to enjoy a chinwag run at their chosen pace. Those who are in a hurry can forge ahead, but will do regular turnbacks so as to ensure that the group stays together.
| Day | Time | Meeting Place |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 18.00-19.00 | The Small Gym, Buxton Community School |
| Thursday | 18.00-19.00 | The Sportshall, Buxton Community School |
| Saturday | 10.00-11.00 | Dining Hall, Buxton Community School |
The cost for each of these sessions is £1.
The Monday session is an indoor session in the Small Gym during the winter. We do circuit training and plyometric exercises as well as working on technique and flexibility. The older juniors might go for a longer run, on the road, if we cannot use the Gym for some reason. The Gym is at Buxton Community School.
The Thursday session is usually run on the grass track during Spring, Summer and early Autumn, if the field is not too wet. Otherwise, the Endurance group will venture up into the woods when it is too wet to use the field. The Sprint, Jmps and Throws groups may use either TEmple Fields or go down to Boradwalk. The Endurance group run on the road during the winter, or try to improvise a session on Broadwalk to avoid the traffic. The Sprints, Jumps and Throws groups tend to use Broad Walk.
The Saturday session is specifically targeted at the younger athletes. This is based on Sportshall exercises which will prepare the athletes for Sportshall athletics competitions as well as improving their speed, strength, coordination and flexibility. This is currently a Trial, which we hope to continue beyond the Half term holiday in February 2006.
The club has just secured a grant of £2000 from High Peak Borough Council. This will enable us to purchase javelins, discus, and other field event equipment. The intention is that we should be able to offer coaching in almost the entire track and field program, bar pole vault and hammer.
The lack of ready access to a proper track means that the coaches have to improvise. The juniors make at least one trip to an open meeting, usually at Blackpool, to gain some experience. The club also sending athletes to the Derbyshire Track & Field Mini League, a low-key, friendly competition, between clubs in Derbyshire. This experience can prove very valuable when the athletes compete in the County Champions and School Championships on the track!
We have discussed whether we ought to make the trip to Macclesfield to use the all weather track. This may happen if there is sufficient interest. It could possibly be a co-ordinated effort with the seniors.

| Day | Time | Meeting Place |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 18.30 | Pavilion Gardens car park |
| Wednesday | 19.00 | Railway Hotel |
| Friday | 18.30 | Broad Walk - Old Hall end |
| Sunday | 09.15 | Marlborough Road |
The Monday session is usually run offroad during Spring, Summer and early Autumn, unless the weather is truly awful. We normally drive out in the Peak District for a run, which lasts for about one hour. We usually stay on the roads during the winter. The run is then a bit shorter, say, 50 minutes or so.
The Wednesday session is the main session. These sessions are usually a mixture of road and offroad during the light parts of the year and we tend not to drive out of Buxton. The turnback system is of course in operation during the sessions. We are currently running two groups - one steady group and one faster group. You're free to join either group. The steady group usually runs at a slower pace and for a shorter time than the faster group. There are a few hardcore fell runners for whom running on the roads is just not palateable - they regularly don head torches and head out in the dark for an offroad run. The sensation of running in the dark is very special. Please come along, especially if you have not tried night running before. We can usually sort you out with a head torch if you haven't got one. The offroad sessions are announced in advance, usually a week beforehand. Please note that there will be at least one group going on the roads, even it is a night offroad run.
We are running a Friday session. The session usually lasts for about 45 to 60 minutes. This session will focus on improving our efficiency at faster running pace and this is a classic speed session. Frank Shorter, quite an accomplished marathon runner, maintained that one should train as a 5k runner in order to be a good marathon runner. It is important to practice all aspects of running and speed is very important, though it is often a neglected component of the training schedule. Please note that we can all benefit from a bit of extra speed in our legs, irrespectve of how fit or talented we are!
The Sunday session normally consists of a long run, usually offroad. There is a group of fell runners who meet up for a run somewhere in the Peak District. We usually arrange the session, the route and where to meet on Friday or Saturday. The length of the run varies, from about 2 hours to 4 hours. The pace is usually quite sensible, since the point of a long run is not to set a blistering pace but to accumulate time on your legs. It has been suggested that we assign a meeting place and time so that anyone who wants to come along can just turn up. There is currently no organised road run on Sundays, but we will endeavour to arrange something if there is sufficient interest.
The only caveat is that our fell races are often held on Wednesdays (during the summer months) and Sundays. There usually a small group of runners going out from the Railway Hotel on Wednesdays even if there is a race on.
It is the intention amongst a group of Buxton fell runners to make trips up to the Lake District, not only just for training runs, but also for recce-ing routes for the long A races, which are held in the Lake District. I would envisage that we will go up for a weekend, åerhaps travelling up on Friday night, running on the Saturday and then perhaps do a long-ish walk on the Sunday, before heading back to Buxton. It is also possible to go up on the day to the Yorkshire Dales for a long run. I will keep you informed of dates and venues.
