The intention is to move the news items to this file on roughly a monthly basis.
The traditional Christmas Day run will be held on Sunday 25 December. Meet in Pavilion Gardens car park for a 10am start. Fancy dress is optional.
The tidying up process continues. I have further rationalised the website, which entailed me removing some redundant (and out-of-date) information. Please let us know what you feel about the revamped the website and what you would like to see on the website.
You might notice that the website has undergone a few changes. I have tried to rationalise the feel of the website and also tried to make it a bit easier to maintain. However, the new addition to the website is a page that is solely dedicated to the club's junior athletes; please visit the Junior page. Ros is working on a first proper version of the page, which we hope will up and running for the new year. Please let us know what you feel about the revamped the website and in particular about the junior page.
It was with great pleasure I received the fell race calendar the other day. Things have really moved on in the fell racing world. The calendar now describes the races in terms of km (distance)and m (amount of ascent). Brave New World! Is this the end of the world as we know it? In order to smooth our passage into the metric world, I offer the following information: 1 mile is roughly 1609 m (1.61 km) and 1 foot is 0.3048 m. More information to follow. Oh, and 10 km is 6.2 miles.
I have updated the fell running section of the Upcoming Races page in anticipation of the new webmaster taking over from me. As always please let me know if you discover any errors or glaring omissions. I will endeavour to populate the sections for other race types too over the next week or so. Please bear with me.
Next years County Championships over the country will be held on Saturday 7th January 2012 at Markeaton Park in Derby. This is a fast and usually dry course. It is not a particularly taxing course either, with a couple of gentle climbs per lap.
It has been decided that the club will pay for the entries for any senior or junior athlete who wants to compete in the Championships. Any athlete who wants to compete should contact Sheila Bradley, who will sort out the entry form and pay the entry fee. The closing date for entry is 9th December, so please allow a week for Sheila to get the entries sorted, that is to say please let Sheila know that you want to run by 2nd December at the latest.

Five runners from Buxton AC travelled up to Newcastle last weekend to run the Bupa Great North Run. Annemarie Claye was the first BAC runner back with a great finish time of 1hr 44mins. Wendy Bainbridge was the next back in 2hours exact. Amy Wadsworth and Sarah Nicholson (who ran for the Alzheimer's Trust in memory of Sarah's Father) finished in 2hrs 8mins, shortly followed by Kath Forder in 2hours 11mins. Well done all!!
Rob White ran the the High Peak 40 Mile Challenge on Saturday in a superb time of 7hours 51mins. This is a great run by Rob especially seeing as it's his long distance event. The HP40 is a very popular event that sees runners travelling from all around the country to enter, however it's very local for us starting and finishing at the Buxton Community School and taking in a beautiful route through the Goyt, Eccles Pike, Kinder, Tideswell, Millers Dale and Chelmorton. Lets get a large Team out there next year! Thanks also to Jim, Annemarie, Ros and Simon for agreeing to support the Beet Farm Checkpoint
Long Distance Legend Simon Moorhouse recently ran the Bullock Smithy in a new personal best time of 13hours 42mins. Simon was the only club member to run the 56 mile Peak District Run/Hike this year, but represented the club with a truly great performance. Well done Simon! Good Luck with the Hardmoors 60, this weekend!

Tessa, the organiser of Langley '7', has send us note saying that that entries for the Langley 7 are open online at www.ukforms.net. The race is on on Saturday 5 November at 2pm, starting in Langley, near Macclesfield (SK11 0BU). As usual, the race is a beautiful, challenging run of about 7 miles on scenic, quiet country lanes - with fabulous tea and cake at the end to revive with!!!

Message from Ian Francis:
With summer holidays over it is time to get something to look forward to in your diary! I am arranging a club night out on Friday October 7th to go and see some stand-up comedy. The event is the Buxton Buzz and the venue is the Pavilion Arts Centre. The show starts at 8pm but the idea is to get there by 7pm and have a couple in the bar before hand. We may even have a couple afterwards aswell somewhere else. On the website it says "The very best in stand-up comedy, featuring Peter Slater, Paul T Eyres, Mike Belgrave. Compere: Dan Smith." I have had some good nights here in the past (it used to be in the upstairs room at the Old Club House). Tickets are £6 each.
If you want to come along then please let me know by ticking the attending option on this event ormaking a comment. Partners are welcome. You will also somehow need to get your money to me if you want me to book your ticket. Bring it down to the club on a Wednesday or liase with me through Facebook to get the money to me.
I will be trying to get the tickets on Friday Sept 23rd as Buxton Buzz is usually very popular. Take Care. Ian
As of this Wednesday, I'm pleased to announce we will be meeting at Buxton Pool from 6:45pm onwards. This is a trial arrangement, but hopefully we can make this our home if everything goes well. To reiterate, from today, Buxton AC will no longer meet at the Railway Pub on a Wednesday. We will meet at the Buxton Pool. Monday nights remain unchanged.
There will be no Monday sessions during the School holidays. The Thursday sessions will be held as usual on 28th July, 4th August, 11th August and 18th August. However, there are no training sessions during the last two weeks of the holidays.

Good Luck to Simon, Ros, Ann and Jarrod who are running the Swaledale Marathon this Saturday 11th June.
Mo Farah's joined legendary Alberto Salazar's training group and it is really paying off. Mo ran an absolutely fantastic race over 10,000 m at Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon last night. Mo not only set a new PB, a new British record but also a new European record. The new time is 26:46.57, thus improving the European record by six seconds, the British record by 31 seconds and his old PB by a mighty 41+ seconds! Mo's joined a very select group of athletes going sub-27 minutes. I reckon there is even more to come from Mr Farah. Excellent performance, Mo!

Phil Leigh has kindly mapped out the route of the Carnival 5-mile road race using the mapmyrun site. Please click on Carnival 5 Route. I think you might be able to download it to a GPS (though you might have to be a paying subscriber). Anyway, enjoy! Pretty clever technology, this t'internet and mapping, like! I'm sorry to say that Goyts Moss Fell Race, which was scheduled to take place next Wednesday 18th May, is now cancelled. I have been declined a Permit from United Utilities to organise the event. The issue is the risk associated with potential disturbance to nesting ground birds in that area of the Goyt Valley. Specifically this year, Ive been informed that the Goyts Moss route runs close to the location of a bird that affords legal protection under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Ive been discussing this matter with both United Utilities & Natural England over recent weeks, and there appears to be no possibility for me to run this event either on the current course or an alternative course in that part of the Goyt Valley.
I am obviously disappointed not to be holding the event this year, but also accept and respect the concerns raised by Natural England. I'd also encourage us all to be mindful of this if training in the Goyt over the next months. This race was a Championship Race for Buxton AC. This will now be replaced by another race later in the year. Please give me a call or email if you want to discuss. Cheers, Mark Fitzgerald
It's the White Peak Marathon next Saturday. This superb marathon starts in Thorpe and follows the Tissington and High Peak Trail to finish in Cromford near Matlock. It's usually well attended by Buxton AC, and this year is no different. Sheila Bradley, Simon Moorhouse, Dan Feely, Sarah Guise, Annemarie Claye and Mark Fitzgerald will be running this year. Also, Matlock AC hold a half marathon at the same time. Rob White and Ian Francis have entered. Both races are now full, but good luck everyone running.
Simon Moorhouse, the organiser, is pleased to announce that the Buxton Half Marathon Brochure is now available for download from the website. You can either use the link in the blue box on the home page or click Half Marathon Brochure 2011 to view or download the brochure.

A coach full of Buxton AC runners ran the Blackpool 10k on Sunday. I think everyone had a good run, and even though there was a heavy downpour a few minutes before the start, the race conditions were generally good. We then spent the rest of the afternoon in Blackpool visiting museums and art galleries. That, of course, is a lie. We went to Blackpools finest and classiest drinking establishments and lived the dream. Moving on, here is a link to the results. It's hard to post directly as the website doesn't filter by club. Blackpool 10k Results
Ian Francis has given final logistics for the Bus etc for the Blackpool 10k Race on Sunday:
"The bus to Blackpool is now full! 30 plus driver. We will meet in the car park at the Railway pub at 7.00am on Sunday morning. The race is at 11.00am and we want a short stop on way up and plenty of time to park and get sorted for this big event (4000 runners) Please remember to bring your Buxton vest as we want to get a great photo of us all at this well turned out event! Of course, don't forget your number either and a change of clothes for pub etc. We should all be sorted and changed for around 1pm. After our fun (or for some of you, shopping) time in Britain's premier resort, we will be heading back around 6.00pm depending on consensus which should get us back into Buxton for around 8.00pm."
There was a great turnout for Buxton at Wednesdays Buxworth 5. Darren Hawkins led home 13 Buxton AC runners. Full results can be found here. Well done all runners, and a big thanks to Goyt Valley Striders for a fantastic race!
This is a new race and is a replacement for the Shady Oak Tough 10k (which is usually very well attended by Buxton AC). It's still organised by our local friends, the Goyt Valley Striders. His son, Elliot (aged 10), ran the Juniors Fun Run in a time of 9mins 16secs, coming 4th in his age group (under 12's) and 14th overall. Well done to both!!
Just a reminder that if you haven't paid Ian Francis for the Blackpool 10k Bus, then please see Ian immediately. Also, the race is filling up quickly so if you haven't entered and plan to run, you need to enter now to secure a place.

Ros Barratt completed her first 20-milers in 553rd place. Ros was slightly disappointed not to break three hours (3:00:38), but she was pleased to have completed the race. Emma Havenhand was shadowing Ros, finishing in 580th place with a time of 3:02:19. Full results can be found at Ashby 20 2011 Results. Well done, Ros, Emma and Roland.
Three Buxton runners travelled down to Stafford on Sunday for the other 20-miler being held on that day. Rob White's purple patch continues. Jonathan Sewell finished in side the top-100 with 97th place and a time of 2:34:02. Jonathan may also have proved that distance running is all about mind over matter in the process. A reminder that the next Championship race is the Cheadle Spring 5, which will be held this Sunday at 10:30am. This is a very popular race with a good chance of achieving a PB. Details and Website link
Buxton runners found the going tough at the National Cross Country Championships held at Alton Towers last weekend. On a horrendously muddy course, the senior mens race over 10K was won by England International runner Steve Vernon of Stockport Harriers in a time of 35 minutes 11 seconds. This was from a massive field of 1350 runners. Dan Feely led the Buxton runners home in 944th place in a time of 55 minutes 26 seconds. He was followed by Ian Francis, 1118th (60.35) and Mark Quince, 1134th (61.06).
Buxton had one representative in the Under 13 Girls; Sophie Quince, coming home in 260th place from 370 runners. In the Under 13 Boys, from a field of 330, Thomas Drabble was 204th, and Daniel Burt 261st. Two other Buxton based athletes took part; Kyle Fowler, Staffs Moorlands, having a great run in the Junior Mens race, finished 19th out of 190 runners, and Kath Lamplough, representing Macclesfield Harriers, was 151st from 550 competitors.
Roly Meyland and his son, Elliot, ran the Bramhall 5k on Saturday. Following a difficult journey out of Buxton due to snowy conditions, Roly and Elliot managed to turn the race into a 'father and son' dash.
Unfortunately for Roly, 'youth' managed to shine through with Elliot achieving a time of 22mins 21 secs (52nd) and Roly running one second behind in 22mins 22secs (53rd). Elliot was 3rd in his category and also achieved a new Personal Best. Brilliant stuff!

Ann and Jarrod Roberts-Dinsley completed the Deal Half Marathon on Sunday. The race started from Fowlmead Country Park in Kent. Conditions on the day were windy but there was some fantastic scenery and even the occasional glimpse of the sea!
Ann ran the race in a time of 2h 7mins, followed by Jarrod with a time of 2h 8mins. A photo of the happy couple mid-race can be found here. Well done!
As part of their Half Marathon 'Tour', Sleaford Half from RAF Cranwell is on the cards for this weekend. Very impressive.
Roland Meyland & Mark Halsey have recently completed the Puma HellRunner Race. The race, which looks very similar to the 'Tough Guy' Event, started from Cannock Chase yesterday. The guys were fortunate enough to have great weather but rain the evening before provided lots of mud, which made the course more challenging but ultimately lots of fun!
The course was very hilly, had lots of tough off road running, and even finised with the 'Bog of Doom'. Apparantly the Devil himself was there to watch proceedings. The race had a massive 1800 runners, and Roly & Mark definitely recommend this race for next years calendar.
Mark's time was 1h 41m 25secs (114th) followed by Roly in a time of 1h 41m 26sec (115th). Well Done Lads!!
I have moved the news from January 2011 to our News from 2011 page. There has also been a request that the headings will only hold the date of the event and not the date when the post was added. The latter details now appear at the bottom of each post. This change will not be carried out retroactively. We welcome your thoughts on the new arrangement.
We are planning a couple of days in Edale on Saturday June 18th. This event is in its early stages at the moment but we are thinking it would be great for us all to have an afternoon and evening camping in the Peak District, including a short offroad run. This event would be one where you could bring your partner, family or friends.
Current ideas for the event are that we arrive in Edale at around 1pm and set up tents and BBQ. Those who want to, can go on a run in the hills. Later, we all have a BBQ and few drinks in the sunshine, kids play, etc. Next morning, get up and head back to your lovely home (these are Ian Francis's words by the way - sorry if you don't have a home, or if indeed, it isn't lovely).
The thinking is that Edale is not too far away, to make it easier for people to bring family. We have done some research and there is a campsite at Booths Farm, and they also have a Camping Barn. What do you need to do? 1) Put the date in your diary so you don't miss it and regret it for a very long time, and 2) Let Ian Francis know if you plan to attend. We are just wanting an idea on numbers at the moment, so there's no committement.
Ian Francis & Nigel Crithlow are organising a trip to Blackpool for the 10k on Sunday 8th May. The Blackpool 10k has a great atmosphere with plenty of support along the route. According to Ian, the plan is make it into a bit of a social event too, staying in Blackpool for some food and beers in the afternoon. More details will follow, however for now, please put the date in your diary and if you're interested, please say that you would like to attend. No commitment is required at the moment, Ian is just trying to get an idea for numbers. There has already been lots of interest! The cost for the race itself will be £11. If you want to enter the race, please find the following link to sign up for the race: link. Also, Ian has set up a facebook page on the following facebook link
There tend to be some really fast times produced in the Alsager 5-miler. This year proved to be no different. The first Buxton runner to finish was evergreen Andy Wilton, who comfortably took home the MV50 prize with a time of 27:44. Andy professed to be happy with the win, but not with his own performance. There were excellent performances by the Buxton AC runners, who were led home by Rob White in 45th place (28:08 - this is a PB I think), followed by Ian Francis in 308th place (36:07), and new member Colleen Butler in 669th place (44:39). Well done everyone!
Unfortunately, the Committee are having difficulties finding a volunteer to organise this year's Carnival 5 race. We are looking for somebody to be the main race director but there would be lots of support from fellow club members. There is a serious risk that this race will have to be cancelled if we do not find a volunteer by the next Commitee meeting in March. So, please, if you are willing to volunteer for this role, then please contact either Nigel Critchlow or Sheila Bradley immediately. This is a very popular race that brings attention not only to Buxton AC, but also Running as a sport. It would be a shame to lose it.
The next Championship race is the Cheadle Spring 5, which will be held on Sunday March 06 at 10:30am. This is a very popular race with a good chance of achieving a PB. Details and Website link
The Friday night speed session is on! We meet by the bollards at the Old Hall end of Broad Walk in Buxton. All runners welcome.
This is a gentle reminder that the next club committee meeting is being held on Wednesday 9 February 2011 in the Railway. The meeting starts at 20:15 or shortly thereafter. All members are welcome to attend. The more, the merrier.

Also, many thanks to Simon Moorhouse and David Nutton for helping out with results and marshalling, and a massive Thank You to Emma Wentworth for organising the race. Emma wants to remind everyone that Half Marathon and Marathon times need to submitted to her as soon as people run the races, for the Championship Results.
The organiser of this year's National XC Championships is seeking marshals from local clubs. The event will be held at Alton Towers on Saturday 19 February. It could be a day-long commitment, with the first race at 11am, last race 3pm and the event would be over by 4.30pm. Any Club helpers would receive hot drinks & food, and there would be a pro rata donation to all Clubs! So, the more helpers from a Club, the bigger the donation that the Club would receive. Jim, Sheila, Andy Wilton and Kath Lamplough have already agreed to help. Anyone willing to help out, please contact Glenn Marriott from Staffs Moorlands. Email: glenn.marriott@openreach.co.uk.
Reminder for the Club 1 Mile Race tomorrow. Start at Broad Walk at 7.15pm.
As part of the cross country season, the North of England Cross Country Championships were held at Sunderland last weekend. Continuing her excellent season, Amy Mellor ran another good race to finish 14th in the Under 17 Womens Championship from a field of 90 runners. In the Under 13 Boys, Daniel Burt finished narrowly ahead of Thomas Drabble (103rd and 104th respectively), from 141 runners. The sole Senior representative in a huge field of 488 runners was Mark Quince who finished 426th.
Two Buxton-based athletes took part in the Wolverhampton Turkey Trot 5m road race on Sunday. Andy Wilton was third overall in the race, first Over 50 Male, in a time of 27 minutes 21 seconds, while Kath Lamplough was third lady in a time of 31.36, just 25 seconds outside her personal best time for the distance.
Congratulations to Ann and Jarrod Roberts-Dinsley, who both completed the Barcelona Half Marathon today in 2 hours and 9 mins. This is also a personal best for Jarrod! Well done guys.

Rob White led home a contingent of Buxton AC runners who had travelled to North Wales to compete in the annual Twin Piers 10K road race. The race, which begins in Llandudno, follows the sea front to finish at Colwyn Bay. From a field of 275 runners, Rob ran a brilliant race to finish in third place, and first Over 35 male, in a time of 35 minutes 13 seconds. Following behind him was Dan Feely, 31st (1st Over 45 male) in 39.48; Nigel Critchlow, 34th in 40.41; Nick Gould, 45th in 42.24; Ian Francis 58th in 44 minutes. Making her debut for Buxton AC was Colleen Butler, 202nd, in 55.03.
Mark Halsey was 32nd and Roland Meylan 57th from a field of 241. Also having very good runs were 12 year old Billy Halsey in 99th place and brother, 15 year old James, who came in 197th place. Elliott Meylan continues his good form, coming 50th in the race, and second in his age category.
At Helsby last weekend, three Buxton athletes took part in the tough Half Marathon. Ian Francis finished in 1 hour 36 minutes and 4 seconds. Ann Roberts-Dinsley was next home in 2.08.59, with Jarrod finished in 2.13.
