Results of the Diamond League Meeting at Bislett in Oslo - 4 June 2010

Bislett is a legendary track which has seen a very large number of world records set over the years. The Diamond League moved to Bislett tonight. The audience was treated to a number of fine performances. My picks are: Jamaican Asafa Powell's 9.72 (equalling his PB but with 2.1 m/s tailwind so it won't count as a record) in the 100 m, Kenya's David Lekuta Rudisha winning the 800 m in 1:42.04, Michael Rimmer's fourth place with 1:44.98 in the same 800 m race, Imane Merga (Ethiopia) winning the 5000 m race in 12:53:81 (and the first 10 runners going under 13 minutes!), Croatian Blanka Vlasic and American Chaunte Howard Lowe sharing the spoils in the Women's High Jump (2.01 m) and Irina Kuruchenko of Russia who long jumped 6.91 m. For the GB runners, it was a bit of mixed bag: Christina Ohourogou (400m, 4th place, 50.98), Celia Taylor and Marilyn Okoro (4th/5th, 800 m, 2:02.57/2:02.80), Andrew baddeley (12th, 1 mile, 4:00.66), David Greene(3rd, 400m hurdles, 49.05) and Nick McCormick, Jermaine Mays and Ricky Stevenson (5th/6th/8th, 1500 m, 3:39.76/3:39.81/3:40.31).

Summer Series Venues Updated - 2 June 2010

The race distances might be slightly out but suffice it to say that the senior races tend to be between five and six miles and the junior races between one and two miles. The fun run for the youngest runners is around a mile long. Remember the first race in the series is held at Tittesworth reservoir this coming Thursday (3rd June).

Jonathan Sewell, fresh from the Club 5 mid-week, travelled to Bramhall Park for the Saturday morning 5 km race. Jonathan finished 16th and completed the course in a time of 20:10. I think this might be Jonathan's first Bramhall Park run.

Rick Houghton Completes the Bob Graham Round in Style - 29 May 2010

It brings me great pleasure to announce that Rick Houghton completed the Bob Graham round this afternoon. And in what style. He had set a schedule for about 22 hours and his finishing time was 20:34. Truly awesome. RESPECT! Apparently his support runners on the final leg were not able to keep up with Rick, who sported the Buxton AC vest as he crossed the finish line at Moot Hall in Keswick. My spy reports that Rick is tired, but is grinning from ear to ear while drinking some well-earned Champagne. Congratulations to Rick for a truly amazing performance. Well done also to his support runners and helpers. Also, congratulations to Andy Pead and Mark Richards(?) (the line was cracking up), both of Goyt Valley Striders. Andy completed the round in 21:something and I'm not quite sure what Mark's time was. I hope to be able to bring you an account from Rick in the near future.

Eleven runners took part in the club championship race over 5 miles on the road. The course follows the Carnival race route and apparently is 4.95 miles according to Rob's GPS. The first three runners in their finishing order in the Ladies race were Annemarie Claye, Emma Havenhand and Sarah Guise. Winner of the Men's race was Rob White who was closely followed by Terry Fowler and Simon Harden. I will post the times here in the next day or so. Many thanks to Emma Wentworth for organising the race and to Rick Houghton, Simon Moorhouse and Dave Nutton for marshalling.

Rob White's Fine Form Continues - 16 May 2010

Rob White was just five seconds outside his recent PB performance in the South Manchester Park 5 km races. Rob clocked 17:28 yesterday when he finished 2nd. He was just a second off the winner's time. Well done, Rob.

More Fine Performances at the County Championship Medals - 09 May 2010

Amy Mellor and Sophie Quince won more medals on the second and final day of the Derbyshire County Track & Field Championships. Amy Mellor came second in the U17 Women 1500 m race and Sophie picked up another Bronze medal by coming third in the U13 Girl's 1500 m race. Again, Sophie set a new fine PB; this time she shaved off 7 s to record 5:35. Stephen Mellor came fourth in his race (U13 Boys). Also competing were Jessica Grindey and Lauren Ashmore though I have no details of times or race distances. At the other end of the age spectrum, Terry Fowler won the Vet's 400 m and took Bronze in the 3000 m. Well done, Amy, Sophie, Stephen, Jessica, Lauren and Terry. Apologies to other Buxtonians, if I have missed your names out. Further details on the County Champs to follow in the next couple of days.

Rob White Shines at Sheffield Half Marathon - 27 April 2010

A number of athletes took part in Sheffield Half Marathon at the weekend. Rob White ran an absolute blinder when he recorded a very swift 1:20:28 for a 37th place. That is a new formidable PB for the distance. Next Buxtonian to finish was Jon Sewell with 1.34.36 in 335th place. Jon was followed by Annemarie Claye in 1620th place with 1.51.10 and in 3453th place was Jayne Denby, who recorded a time of 2.12.07. Well done to Rob, Jon, Annemarie and Jayne.

Update of London Marathon Results - 27 April 2010

Apologies to Caroline Taylor who also took part in the Marathon, but somehow managed to sneak under my radar. Caroline's time was 4:06:07 which earned her 12443rd place overall, 2367th place among the females and finished 1408th in her age group.

Provisional London Marathon Results - 25 April 2010

A number of our runners have travelled down to London for the Marathon. The first number corresponds to placing overall, the second number is the gender placing and the third number is the placing within the category (e.g. WS as in Women Senior). Also competing was Kyle Fowler who had an excellent run in the London Mini Marathon's Regional Challenge where he finished 12th, though Kyle was not entirely happy with his performance. Well done to all those who took part.

Ian Hodgson Mountain Relays [3 October 2010] - 20 April 2010

Rick Houghton is looking to recruit eight runners to take part in the Ian Hodgson Mountain Relays to be held on 3rd October 2010 in Lake District. I know we are a long way away from October, but please check and make a note in your diary. Please speak to Rick if you are keen to take part. Rick is looking to organise some recces to the Lakes, but these will probably not take place until after Rick's Bob Graham attempt.

Rob White competed in Saturday's South Manchester Park run over 5 km. Rob improved on his time from previous week by a considerable margin. Rob's time was 17:23, when he finished second in the race. This was a new PB for Rob, who thinks that there is more to come. Well done, Rob.

Rob White competed in Saturday's South Manchester Park run over 5 km. Rob improved on his time from previous week by a considerable margin. Rob's time was 18:44, which earned him sixth place in the race. The organiser claims that it was a new PB, but we know Rob's ran a lot quicker last year.

Brief Results of South Manchester Park 5 km - 04 April 2010

Rob White competed in Saturday's South Manchester Park run over 5 km. I think this might be an offroad (or part offroad) race, which would explain the slower than usual times. Rob's time was 19:45, which earned him second place in the race.

British Summer Time - 27 March 2010

Please note that we are going over to British Summer Time tonight, i.e. the clocks go forward. We loose an hour's sleep tonight, but as compensation we get another hour of daylight. Sounds fair to me, besides we get the hour back in October.

Race Update - Stafford '20' and Grindleford Gallop - 23 March 2010

Sheila Bradley sends the following report from the Stafford '20' race: "The race consists of 3 laps and incorporated the NSRRA League and the Staffs County Championships. The course is scenic, a little undulating and quite fast, though a strongish headwind curtailed any hope of fast PBs. It was won by Steve Brookes of Tipton in a time of 1.58.49 - a fairly slow time, but I guess the wind must have had some bearing on that. Roland Meylan led the Buxton runners home in a time of 2.40.55, followed by Mark Fitzgerald in 2.47.03, then Simon Moorhouse, 2.48.10. I came in next in 2.50.58, with Emma Havenhand & Emma Wentworth crossing the line together in 3.10.52. Ann & Jarrod Roberts-Dinsley, returning to long distance after a break following their marathon in Nice last November, completed two laps of the course." Please follow the link tp view photos from Photos from Stafford 20 - 2010. The photographs are courtesy of Jim Bradley.

Jayne Denby had an excellent run in the Grindleford Gallop on Saturday, a 21 mile, 3000 ft of climb, off-road event - she knocked 6 minutes off her previous pb for the race - a superb effort. Her finishing time was 5 hrs 2 minutes.

Gentle Reminder about the Subscriptions for 2010 - 18 March 2010

Sheila Bradley, our Membership Secretary, is eagerly awaiting your subscriptions for this year. The fee is a mere snip at £ 17. Preliminary Results of the Club Cross Country Race - 21 February 2010

The snow that appeared overnight greatly reduced the start field and made for an interesting race. We had to improvise the route slightly. The weather was surprisingly mild and hardly any breeze. Sarah Guise. Many thanks must go to Kirsty Ormerod, the organiser, Kath Lamplough, Jared (soon to be Mr Ann), Phil Hutson (marshall) and Bill Allsop (who thought better of it, but turned up) for helping out. The Greenways Do Shropshire - 18 February 2010

Tracey and Brent Greenway travelled to Long Mynd in Shropshire to take part in Long Mynd Valleys fell race. Brent takes up the story: "The race is 11.5 miles but with 4500 feet of climb. It sets off from Carding Mill Valley, Church Stretton and is organised by Mercia fell Runners.

This was my first time but Tracey has done it quite a few times, so I listened to her advice which was take the first 6 miles steady as nearly all of the climbing is in the second part of the race. It was a drab cold day with mist clinging to the peaks and a field of 200 plus set off a bit late at about 11.40a.m in good spirits but with the stark warning that the race was officially finished at 3.00p.m and any unaccounted racers would trigger a search and rescue. I managed to keep with company all the way around - getting lost was not going to be a good option, and there are 7 checkpoints 2 unmanned with dibbers.

I knew that the race was tough so I took an isotonic drink and fuelled up at the beginning of the steeper climbs. The last three climbs are very steep, getting progressively more intimidating, I crawled up some of them to use my ams a bit and give my legs a rest - not very classy. Even less classy was my descending, mostly on my backside, which was very effective except for the time I hit a rock. I finished in 2:51:23 168th out of 200 finishers and about 8 DNF's. Tracey did an awesome 2:07:26 after waiting for someone and not stopping any training leading up to the race. Tracey was 40th overall, 3rd lady and first lady vet 45. Andrew Davies won the race in 1:39:41 with Simon Bailey 8 seconds behind!!!! May be I did get lost, those times are just unbelievable.

As always the race was superbly marshalled, and organised and with loads of photos posted on the web. The snicker bar handed to me at the end was devoured in seconds and there was plenty of complimentary hot soup and coffee at the village hall. Tracey was clean, changed and massaged by the time I arrived. She greeted me with a beaming smile asking me if I agreed with her that it is one of the prettiest races on the calendar. It was not the adjective that was springing to mind, but after a warm shower, change of clothes and lots of hot drinks I had to agree that the views are stunning.

As I continue my education in fell running, ticking off 'must do races' it always amazes and motivates me to see the spectrum of people and abilities enjoying the fells. Must do some more training though."

A Brief Report from Cannock Chase Trig Pont Race - 24 January 2010

Tracey and Brent Greenway took part in the recent Cannock Chase Trig Pont Race. Brent recounts the experience: "Just thought that I'd let you know I have just completed the Cannock Chase Trig Point Race. It is a 15 mile with 1500ft climb race but it was shortened to 12 miles due to the weather conditions which in the end were fine so it was a good decision to go forward. It is really well organised, well marshalled, with drink stations, and soup, tea and cakes at the finish that never run out. The race goes through Cannock Chase on wide trails. It is a navigation race with lot's of options but there's plenty of people around to follow, I think I ended up taking a couple of poor options but some good ones too so I don't feel hard done by. It is at a great time in the year to get some undulating miles in and I will definitely do it next year and recommend it for anyone to get back into racing for the New Year. I did 1:56:26 coming 88th out of 144 finishers. Tracey ran a blinder coming 21st overall, 2nd lady but first vet 45 1:36:16. (Tracey ran under Ilkley as it was a fell race). Sat in front of the fire now, shot to bits but happy." Well done, Tracey and Brent.

Results of Woodbank Park 5 km - 3 January 2010

Two hardy souls braved the weather conditions to take part in Woodbank Park 5 km race. Kyle Fowler won the race with a fine 16:54 clocking, while father Terry was eight with 21:12. I have no report on the conditions underfoot, but would guess it was quite slippery.

Report from the New Year Celebrations at Edale - 2 January 2010

Sheila Bradley sends the following report from the New Year Celebrations at Edale organised by Ros Barratt: What a time was had by all! Great food, great company, and a great couple of days, courtesy Ros who came up with the mad idea of spending New Year's Eve in a youth hostel - mad enough to appeal to 23 of us, so perhaps not quite so mad after all, and it turned out to be a fantastic way to spend New Year.

A few of us (me, Jim, Suicide & Annemarie, plus Sid & Lucy - see Lucy posing below) met early in the day and had a snowy trek from the youth hostel towards Edale and part way along the Pennine Way, before heading back to Edale and an obligatory pub stop where, coincidentally, Ros & her family had decided to walk to on their arrival in Edale. Coincidence or just a group of alcoholics?! Louisa & her 'extra' party of 12 or so mid-teens were arriving at Edale Rail Station after we'd returned to the youth hostel and Ros fretted her way back there wondering whether they'd have on appropriate footwear (they didn't), torches (not a chance) and whether they'd find the youth hostel (they did, well they turned up so their geography can't be that bad!).

Everyone went to enormous lengths to prepare & bring wonderful food - chili con carne, thai green curry, salsa wraps, mushroom soup, tons of lovely salady things, a host of delicious puddings - and, importantly, enough alcohol to sink 2 battleships, never mind 1. Party games, charades, table tennis and many other daft games, especially Suicide's singing charades (you had to be there), sped us towards midnight and the witching hour - counted down loudly and positively by Gentleman Jim (MY watch is right, he insisted) and celebrated with the required amount of fizzy stuff. The Rushworth family did us proud with their contribution of the daft games - and gamely took part too, so we all acted & looked daft at the same time.

Despite promises of an early (7am!) run over Kinder, there was no evidence to suggest anyone actually left their beds much before breakfast started around 9 - and there were definitely no new footsteps in the snow (see Jim below gritting the paths on the day we arrived - he must have been a scout in his youth - not only did he bring a snow shovel but a bag of grit too!). Well, would you have got out of a nice warm bunk after a night on the ale? No doubt some couldn't quite make it down from the top bunks . . . .

Breakfast was a busy affair - the youth hostel was pretty full and other 'self-caterers' selfishly got up just before us and hogged the facilities for a short while - no matter, there was some more fine fare waiting for us to scoff - pancakes, croissants, brioche, cereals, toast, smoked salmon & scrambled egg - when does that New Year diet start? Great team effort went into the catering and, have to say, the washing up - even the teenagers, after a few gentle hints!

Debbie ably led the group on a wonderful winter walk from the youth hostel after breakfast, heading along the mid reaches of the valley towards Win Hill, with plenty of stops for the youngsters (OK, and some of the more mature of the group) to have snowball fights, skid perilously across icy ponds and generally be teenagers, plus a few snack breaks in case of threat of starvation, before we all arrived back at the hostel. Believe it or not, there was a real need for further snacking before the group, reluctantly, went our separate ways - well, there had been a severe snowstorm while we'd been out and you never know what you might encounter on the long trek back to civilisation ......

Thanks especially to Ros for the idea, for the booking, for sorting us out with what food we needed to bring - fantastic idea that went wonderfully well. Thanks to everyone for being such great sports & for a superb couple of days. When's the next outing? Please click on New Year's Celebrations at Edale 2009 to view the lovely photographs, courtesy of Sheila Bradley.

Pictures from the Christmas Day Run 2009 - 31 December 2009

We had an excellent turnout at the Christmas Day run. I believe it was the best for quite a few years. We were blessed with snow to make it a truly festive experience. Please click on Christmas Day Run 2009 to view the photographs, courtesy of Sheila Bradley. I seemed to have deleted the original entry on the website. Apologies!

Happy New Year - 31 December 2009

I wish everyone a Happy New Year. I hope you achieve whatever you are aiming for next year. There are not many races over the festive period, but the respite will not be long as the County Cross Country Championships are held on Saturday 9 January 2010 - Markeaton Park is the venue for the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire races.
