The intention is to move the news items to this file on roughly a monthly basis.
I wish everyone a Happy New Year. I hope you achieve whatever you are aiming for next year. There are not many races over the festive period, but the respite will not be long as the County Cross Country Championships are held on Saturday 9 January 2010 - Markeaton Park is the venue for the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire races.
The Fell Calendar is not expected to arrive for a while yet. Brian Shelmerdine, the organiser of the Lamb's Longer Leg Fell Race, has therefore asked me to inform you that the race is pre-entry only! I stress - no entries on the day will be accepted. The race will be held on Sunday 17 January 2010 with an 11:00 start. To enter please send your entry form (a FRA generic form will do) along with a cheque for £ 3 to Brian Shelmerdine, 6 Salisbury Street, Hadfield, Glossop SK13 1NP. I presume you should make the cheque payable to Brian Shelmerdine but he does not say.
The traditional Chrstimas Day run will be held on Friday. The run starts at 10 am from the car park by Buxton swimming pool, the two-storey car park in Pavilion Gardens. All members are welcome to come along. It is a great way to build up an appetite for the dinner later.
Simon Moorhouse, in anticipation of a London Marathon place, travelled down to Luton to take part in Luton Marathon. Simon finished in 295th place with a time of 3:59:08. His time equates to 57.64 % in age related terms. Well done, Simon and good luck in London in April.
Sheila Bradley has kindly provided me with a set of incriminating evidence gathered on the recent Fancy Dress run. Winners of the prizes were Emma Havenhad (Vicky Pollard) and Mark Fitzgerald, Rick Houghton and Simon Moorhouse as a trio of sheep. A very good time was had by all. Please follow the Fancy Dress Run 2009 link to view the photos. It just confirmed the notion that runners are a strange lot!
The draw for the two guaranteed entries to the 2010 London Marathon produced two winners: Ann Roberts and Simon Moorhouse. Congratulations to Ann and Simon. All that remains is to get down to some serious training.
A Big Thank You to all members for the lovely bunch of flowers and the card.
We will hold the raffle of London Marathon places on Wednesday 16 December. The raffle will take place either before or after the Fancy Dress run. There will be a price for the best female and best male outfit in the form a bottle of wine to each winner. The winners of the Club Championships 2009 (female and male) will also receive their prizes on what promises to be a action filled evening. Please come along; the more, the merrier!
We had a pretty good turnout for the the fourth and final race in the North Staffordshire Cross Country League held at Westwood High School in Leek. The results were as follows: U13 Girls: 15. Jessica Grindey, 17. Sophie Quince, 21. Lauren Ashmore and 22. Jade Ashmore; U17 Women: 2. Amy Mellor; U11 Boys: 6. Stephen Mellor, 8. Lynden Caven-Smith, 23. Joe Grindey; U13 Boys: 9. Thomas Drabble; Senior & Veteran Women: 5. Tracey Greenway, 40. Sheila Bradley, 55. Emma Havenhand, 57. Annemarie Claye, 81. Joanne Cudahy, 102. Jayne Denby; Senior & Veteran Men: 165. Mark Quince, 188. Brent Greenway. Amy Mellor finished second in the U17 Women's category. Tracey Greenway clinched first place in her age group and Jayne Denby took a bronze medal in her age group. Also, the ladies managed to field at least one team at each of the races. Sheila Bradley has kindly sent me a set of photographs from the race; please click on Photos from Fourth North Staffs XC Race 2009 to view the pictures. I apologise for the seemingly random set of results, but I am sure I saw the results on the website last night and now they are not there. I am losing, big time. It was excellent to see Joanne Cudahy making a comeback after the birth of her second daughter. Meanwhile Kath Lamplough finished 12th in the final race.
I have moved the news prior to 22 November 2009 to the News from 2009 page. I have also begun a long overdue revamp of the club kit page. I hope to have the final version of the latter page ready during the upcoming Christmas holidays.
Please note that the Friday sessions on 18 December, 25 December and 1 January 2010 have been cancelled. Normal service will resume on Friday 8 January, weather permitting.
We usually hold a short but invigorating run on Christmas Day morning. The run that takes in Solomon's Temple sets everybody up for a turkey feast later in the day. Further details nearer the day.
The very popular annual Christmas fancy dress run is being held on Wednesday 16 December. We will meet up as usual in the Railway. There will be a price for the best costume, I think.
The next committee meeting will be held in the Function Room at the Railway on Wednesday 9 December 2009. The meeting will start at 20:15 or shortly thereafter. All members are invited to attend the meeting.
Sheila Bradley has kindly sent me a set of photographs from the Christmas Do held on Friday last week. Please click on Photos from Christmas Do 2009. A good time was had by all.
We have been given two guaranteed places in next year's London Marathon. We are holding a raffle of the two places at the Christmas Do on Friday 4 December. Due to a slight mishap, the names of people who have put their names forward have been lost. Please can those who have put forward their names previously please send Sheila Bradley an email. Many thanks and apologies! Those names we do have are Simon Moorhouse and Emma Havenhand.
I have cancelled the speed session on Friday as the Christmas Do is on that night. Normal service will resume on Friday 11 December.
Roland Meylan and Rob White took part in the Saturday morning 5 km races in Bramhall Park and Woodbank Park respectively. Roland completed the 5 km distance in 22:53 to finish 47th. Meanwhile, Rob finished 3rd in 18:28. Well done, lads.
We now have a selection of photographs from the third race in the North Staffordshire Cross Country League, which was held on Stafford Common on Saturday 14 November. The photographs are courtesy of Wendy Higginbottom. Please click on Photos from Stafford Common - Stills or Photos from Stafford Common - Slideshow to view the photos.
Ros made me aware of an error in the results. Ros' time should have been 1:19:51. Luckily my error did not affect the results. I have amended the results accordingly.
Fletcher Cup was held today in relatively benign conditions compared to the weather we have had of late. Seven brave runners took part. Winner of the Fletcher Cup was Rob White, who was also fastest on the day. Rob's time was 1:07:38 and he was 22 s off his prediction. Winner of the May Morrison Memorial Shield for first female veteran was Ros Barratt. The times were: Rob White - 1:07:38, Simon Harden - 1:08:45, Steve Kenworthy - 1:15:27, Ros Barratt - 1:24:51, Emma Havenhand - 1:25:26, and Phil Hutson - 1:26:58. Annemarie and Lucy Claye unfortunately went the wrong way. A big Thank You to Emma Wentworth, Mark Quince, Joanne, Rebecca and Rachel Cudahy for their help and support. Please click on the link to view the results of Fletcher Cup 2009 [pdf, 61 kB].
Ros Barratt are inviting members to celebrate the New Year in Edale. The idea is to stay at the Youth Hostel in Edale to see in the New Year. The exact itinerary will be posted nearer the date. I know for a fact that a midnight walk up onto Kinder is definite possibility. The cost will be about £ 11.95 (members of YHA) or £ 14.95 (non-members). There are couple of options: i) to cook something together at the hostel or ii) each brings along a dish. There are already seven takers: Sheila and Jim Bradley, Annemarie and Steve Claye, Tracey and Brent Greenway and Ros Barratt with family. Anyway, more news in the very near future. Please speak to Ros if you want to find out more and/or want to book your place. The relevant item on the forum is Edale New Year Celebrations.
We currently have four runners entered for tomorrow's Fletcher Cup; Ros Barratt, Annemarie Claye, Simon Harden and Rob White. There was a suggestion that Emma Havenhand and Tracey Greenway were thinking of running. The first runner is off at 10:32. Emma and Stefan will be at the start from 10:15, so you can enter from that if you want to check out the weather first.
Sarah Guise is a experienced practitioner of sports massage. She has a special offer of £ 20 for a session to all club members up until Christmas. You can also purchase gift vouchers. Please speak to Sarah at club sessions to arrange an appointment. Sort out your tight hamstrings/quads and get a new spring in your step. You know it makes sense.

The Northern Cross Country Championships are held on Saturday 23 January 2010 at Witton Park in Blackburn. The English National Cross Country Championships are held on Saturday 27 February 2010 at Roundhay Park in Leeds. The Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships are held on Saturday 13 March 2010 at Wollaton Park, Nottingham. You can enter all these races, except for the Inter-Counties for which you must qualify through a top-nine placing at the County Champs.
The Buxton Half Marathon will be held on Sunday 30 May 2010. The Buxton Carnival 5-Mile road race will be held on Saturday 17 July 2010. I will post further details here when they become available.
Please note that you need to send you menu choices and payment to Ros Barrett by 20 November 2009. We need to give the Railway time to order the right amount of food. As a sweetener, the club is providing wine with the dinner (a bottle per four people). I have been reliably informed that the wine is very nice. There will be karaoke, fun and games afterwards. We will also hold a draw for the two guaranteed places in next year's London Marathon. We will also present the winners of this year's Club Championships with their prizes. I am hoping that Norman Taylor will be able to present the lucky marathon runners with the places and the club champions with their prizes.
We have been given two guaranteed places at next year's London Marathon. We traditionally allocate these places to members who have put forward their names. Priority will be given to those who have entered the race but had their application refused and who haven't had a guaranteed place in the last couple of years, I think. However, if you have had your entry refused and you still want to the marathon, then put your name forward. Please let either Mark Quince or Sheila Bradley that you want to be considered for one of the two places.
The new committee looks like this: Chairman - Mark Quince, Secretary - Sheila Bradley, Treasurer - Ros Barrett, Welfare officers - Wendy Higginbottom and Mark Quince, Kit Secretary - Rick Houghton, Social Secretary - Sarah Nicholson, Press secretary - Jim Bradley, Club Championship Organisers - Kirsty Ormerod and Emma Wentworth, Webmasters: Simon Moorhouse (Forum) and Mark Fitzgerald and Stefan Ledin, President - Norman Taylor. I am also pleased to announce that Simon Moorhouse will be organising the Half Marathon again (with the help of Phil Leigh) and Sarah Guise will organise the Carnival 5-mile race. However, we are looking to organise a more formal sub-committee for the 5-miler. We successfully fielded teams in a number of relays. In order not to loose momentum, we have got three team managers: Kirsty Ormerod - Road, Sheila Bradley - Cross Country and Rick Houghton - Fell (subject to confirmation). Stefan Ledin would like to thank all members of the Committee for all the support they have given him during his time as chairman.
Three Buxtonians took part is what must be one of the best fell races around here. The Roaches has it all, some sharp and some not-so-sharp uphills, muddy and cow slushy fields and spectacular scenery. Rick Houghton was first across the line with a fine 7th place (2:18:08). Mark Cudahy was next home in 31st place (2:34:18). Paul Drabble finished 52nd with 2:41:27.
Please do not forget the Annual General Meeting to be held in the Derwent Room in the Buckingham Hotel on Tuesday 10 November 2009. The meeting will start at 19:00. All members are encouraged to attend the AGM.
The second of four races in the North Staffordshore Cross Country League was held at Park Hall Country Park yesterday. The club had an excellent turnout. The results were as follows. The winner of the Men's race was Chris Davies (Telford AC). It was also nice to see Andy Wilton back racing. Well done to all Buxtonians and in particular to Amy Mellor. The next race in the league is next Saturday 14 November at Stafford Common.
Rick and Sally travelled down to the south coast to take part in the Seven Sisters marathon. Rick has sent us this report: "Sally very pleased to finish it - she walked the last 4 miles as her bad knee was painful. 5 hours 20 mins or so about 650th out of 850 or so runners. Course very well recommended.
"I got lost in the mist with a group of 6 runners - went through 1/2 way in 118 mins. Then did 2nd half in 91 mins to finish in 13th place - 3 hours 29mins. 8mins faster and I'd have been 3rd - 26 mins and I'd have won it."
Sheila Bradley has kindly sent me a set of photographs from the English National Cross Country Championship relays held yesterday. Please click on Stills from English XC Champs 2009 or Slideshow from English XC Champs to view the photos.

Also running were two of our ex-juniors: Chris Rushworth ran a 11:20.65 for Macclesfield Harriers and Kyle Fowler ran 09:27.10 for Staffordshire Moorlands AC. Well done to the runners who took part. I hope I didn't oversell the event when I said that it's a cracking day out.
There will be no speed session this coming Friday 23 October 2009. Normal service will resume the following Friday. I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
The traditional Christmas Do will be held in the Function Room at the Railway on Friday 4 December 2009. The cost is a very reasonable £12 per person for a three-course meal, discotheque/karaoke and other fun and games. It is the same karaoke as last year, which was such a great hit. Please speak to Ros Barrett, either on club nights or call her on Buxton 27695, if you want to come along. The pub can cater for 50 people so make sure to book you place early to avoid disappointment. A hardcopy of the menu will be sent out in the next couple of days. The club is subsidising the meal and will provide a small amount of wine. Please see Christmas Party Menu 2009 [464 kB, PDF] for a sneak preview.
Sheila report from a run last Sunday. Sheil writes: "A group of us went to Derwent Reservoirs last Saturday and did the 15 mile - Kath & Wendy are beginning their Paris marathon training, Ann & Jarrod are in training for the Nice Marathon in 3 weeks' time, me, Jim, Sarah & Ros went along for the ride. Conditions were perfect, sunny, crisp and the post-run flapjack well worth the pain! Lola the miniature Jack Russell covered twice the distance, having four legs and going back & forth investigating interesting undergrowth. Please follow the link to view a photograph of the reservoir dog and runners.
Buxton AC competed for the first time in the British Fell & Hill Relays Championship held at Lamplugh in the Western lakes on Sunday 18th October. The final team comprised Rick Houghton (leg 1), Rob White and Paul Tutt (leg 2), Mark Cudahy and Simon Moorhouse (leg3 –navigation), and Simon Harden (leg4). Buxton AC acquitted themselves very well with many people at the event telling us how good it was for BAC to be represented alongside all the well known fell running clubs from all over the UK. At this time we are not sure of the final results but we believe that we finished in ‘mid-field’ of the 151 teams that actually ran on the day.
The first leg of 5.1 miles was more like a cross country race with a very fast start, fast middle and even faster run in. Rick suffered from blistered feet (reccying the day before in an old, hardly used pair of Walshes – serves me right), broke away from the field to ‘straight line’ one of the descents only to pick up another blister on the rough ground. Overtaking was difficult. End result 29th place about 5 minutes behind the leaders for leg 1.
Rob and Paul then ran an excellent 2nd leg. They confused Colin Wilshaw, who had taken on the role of team photographer, when they took a separate line to pretty much every team on the long run out to checkpoint1. Maybe they were just camera shy. For much of the leg they ‘didn’t really see any of the other teams’ but got round strongly to put BAC in 38th place at the halfway mark. By this time the weather had deteriorated to windy rain and low visibility – ideal for the navigation leg! Mark and Simon plotted a steady course on this one. Many teams appeared to be ‘all over the place’ – some getting to checkpoint 5, having missed 4, etc. Local knowledge would have been a big help here and many of the top teams pulled ahead by significant margins. Many teams used pairs of experienced orienteers on this section. Mark and Simon brought us in in about 68th place to release Simon Harden on the last leg – so we avoided the 3pm leg 4 ‘mass start’ which is used to sweep up many of the slower teams. Simon overtook several teams on the tough climbing sections of leg 4, only to lose a few places on the steep downhills. The final descent was especially tough as it had been used by so many runners during the day. Hopefully we dibbed all the checkpoints properly – the top three teams were apparently disqualified for missing the first checkpoint on the last leg and admitting to it in the post race interviews!
The Fell Relays champs are held near Ennerdale in the lakes tomorrow. We have a team entered in the Open category. We have Nigel Critchlow on the first solo leg, who hands over to Paul Tutt and Rob White. Paul and Rob then pass the metaphoric baton on to Mark Cudahy and Simon Harden who will do the potentially tricky navigation leg. The glory leg, also a solo leg, has been reserved for Rick Houghton. Have good run all of you. I look forward to a report and a few photographs.
The Bill Moss Memorial Fell Race will be held on Sunday 15 November in Goyt Valley. The race starts at 11:00 from near the pond at Bunsal Cob, next to the two car parks. I think it will be same route as in previous couple of years, i.e. a fast and furious start followed by a long steady climb and of course the lovely climb up to the finish. Please support this race which is held in memory of Bill Moss.
The Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 10 November in the Derwent Room, Buckingham Hotel on Burlington Road. The meeting will start at 19:00. All members are welcome to attend. Please come along and have a say in how the club is run.
Mark Fitzgerald has kindly sent me the results of the Weekend's Windgather fell race and the results of the Goyt Valley series. Winner of the Men's race was Lloyd Taggart ahead of Dave Aucott and Buxton's Rick Houghton. The Women's race was won by Sandra Lewis from Julia Nolan and Rachel Nolan. The series was won by Lloyd Taggart and Caroline Scott. Please click on Results of Windgather Race and Series - 2009 [61 kB,PDF] to view or download the results.
The next Club Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday 14 October in the Function Room at the Railway pub in Buxton. The meeting will start at 20:15. All members are welcome to attend the meeting.
Windgather Fell Race, the fourth and final race in the Goyt Valley Fell Race series is held on Sunday 11 October, with a 11:00 start. The race is over 13.5 miles and involves 2500 ft of climbing. It entry on the day only, and the entry fee is £ 5.00. Please use the parking field. for further details, please speak to Andrew on Buxton 25601. It is a lovely route and one not to be missed.

In the half marathon, Emma Wharton completed the course in 1:43:54, Ann Roberts recorded a time of 2:01:14, and Jarrod Dinsley followed shortly after in 2:04:19. Mark Fitzgerald and Simon Moorhouse took part in the full marathon; Mark's time was 3:41:57 and Simon's 3:48:35. A race report will follow shortly.
We have just received an invitation and entry form from Stockport Harriers who are staging their annual 10-mile road race on Sunday 13 December 2009 with a 10:15 start. This is perfect end to a night of Luciafirande(!). Please follow the link Stockport 10 Entry Form [166 kB, PDF] to download the form or Stockport 10 race information [92 kB, PDF] to download the race information.
Mr Allen, the race organiser, has asked if anyone from the club would be willing to help out at the finish line or wherever there is a shortage. I got the impression that one would not sign up to spend the whole afternoon helping out. Every little help would be gratefully received. Speak to Sheila Bradley or make yourself known on the day.
The first of four races in the North Staffordshire Cross Country League is held this coming Saturday 3 October at Lyme Valley Park in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Parking is limited and we are recommended to park by Total Fitness on A34 or the Remploy Car Park, also relatively nearby. The postcode for Total Fitness is ST4 6NW for those with sat navs. Please note that the start times have been moved forwards by 30 minutes this year. The start times are: U11 Girls — 12:30, U13 Girls and U11 Boys — 12:45, U15 Girls and U13 Boys — 13:00, U17 Girls and U15 Boys — 13:15, U20, Senior and Veteran Women and U17 Men — 13:30, U20, Senior and Veteran Men — 14:05. We are hoping to have a good turnout for this race. We need three Ladies to make up a Ladies team and four men to make up a Men's team. Let's go for promotion this year. The organiser also advises that there will be portaloos by the start for you convenience.
I have the results for our Buxton athletes: Joseph Grindey finished 12th in the U11 Boys race. In the U13 Girls: Jessica Grindey was 11th, Lauren Ashmore 22nd and Jade Ashmore 32nd. In the U17 Men, Macclesfield Harrier Chris Rushworth was 11th. In the Women's race: Sheila Bradley was 27th, Emma Havenhand 28th and Wendy Bainbridge 31st. A few Buxton AC members are traveling to Germany this weekend to run the Koln (or Koeln or Cologne or Köln) Marathon and Half Marathon. Simon Moorhouse, Emma Wharton and myself (Mark Fitzgerald) are running the Marathon, and Ann Roberts is running the Half Marathon. The Marathon Website is here. Id love to say that we are going for the Marathon, but rather predictably the main reason is the beer. Bedtime reading: Kolsch & Weissbier.
A 'Super Smashing Great' performance from Buxton AC at the Macclesfield Half Marathon yesterday. Well Done to all that ran. Buxton AC runners times are: Steve Watson 01:22:14, Darran Hawkins 01:24:45, Jonathan Sewell 01:32:19, Daniel Feely 01:36:09, Stephen Vaccarini 01:50:32, Bill Allsop 01:54:33, Ann Roberts 01:59:59 & Helen Watson 02:33:35
Full Results can be found here.
The cross country season traditionally kicks off with the Uttoxeter cross country races, so also this year. We had a number of athletes in action this afternoon. I don't have the placings for the runners, so I will have to post these when they become available. Joseph Grindey did very well in the U11 boys race. Jessica, Joseph's older sister, joined up twins Jade and Lauren Ashmore in the U13 girls' race. In the women's race, Emma Havenhand, Sheila Bradley and Wendy Bainbridge took third prize in the Women's Veteran team competition. Sheila also won the WV45 category. The men's team did not want to be outdone by the ladies and also clinched third spot in the Male Veteran team race; the team consisted of Mark Quince, Simon Harden and Paul Weir. A good time was had by all. Obviously, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, or in this case the photos proves it. Please follow the link to the Photos from Uttoxeter 2009. The photograhs are courtesy of Sheila and Jim Bradley. Well done everybody!
Apologies to those who fancied a speed session tonight. I have had to cancel the session. Return to normal service next Friday.
Terry Fowler is leading a structured training session on Thursday nights between 18:00 and 19:00. These sessions will include speed and strength elements. All members are welcome to attend. Please meet by the Sportshall at Buxton Community School.
Please note that the Dream-on Mile is now next Wednesday 30th September. The mile race starts at 7pm on Broad Walk. All welcome including Juniors. This race replaces the Bill Moss Memorial Race which is due to be rescheduled to a weekend.
Well done to everyone who ran last nights race. After "weeks of careful preparation", 17 people ran...a great turnout. Rob White won in a fantastic time of 31.28. Rob is yet to collect his prize and who can blame him.
Some words from organiser Nigel Critchlow: "Thanks to everyone for turning out, and a special thanks to Dave, Col, Stefan & Sheila for their help marshalling & time-keeping."
1 Rob White 31.28Thanks to Nigel for a great race!
A few of us on Monday thought it would be a good idea to meet 30 minutes earlier for the next few Monday training sessions. We plan to meet at 6pm for the next few weeks to take advantage of the light before the clocks change. Same place: Pavilion Gardens Car Park
The results are up for the High Peak 40. Please find official results here.
This is a reminder that the Club 5 Mile Race is THIS Wednesday (23th September)! The race starts at the Buxton Opera House at 7pm (please arrive for 6.45pm) and mostly follows the Carnival 5 route. This race is also part of the Club Championship so please support by either running or helping to organise. Nigel is organising the race and hes done a great job so far getting things ready. No stone has been left unturned....

We have had a request for helper at the High Peak '40' from Jim Bradley through Sheila. Sheila writes: "Could you please add a request for help for the High Peak 40 to the website? Jim is manning Checkpoint 4 at Beet Farm, just below South Head, above New Smithy at Chapel between 9.30 and 12 noon on Saturday 19 September and is currently short of a couple of people to help out. If anyone is willing to help, could they ring him on 01298 27939 or 07974 505121."

We will introduce a £5 annual membership per junior athlete from this week. The Junior section has been heavily reliant on the financial support from the Seniors in the past. Our running costs are such that we have had to introduce a membership fee.
The Longnor Races are held in Longnor on Thursday 9 September. There is a junior race over two miles and a senior/veterean's race over four miles. The start time is flexible and depends on how the motorbike and horses races go - crash dependent(!). Getting there for about 17:30-18:00 should be early enough, but I will investigate this. So further details to follow.

In return, we will be able to support you in the lead up to the marathon, and on the day itself and supply you with one of our special t-shirts." Simon has tipped us off about this new race. The Peaks Challenge 20 is a challenge event open to runners and walkers. It will take place in the Derbyshire countryside around the Derwent Valley, between the villages of Bamford in the north and Baslow to the south. The start and finish will be near Hathersage. This is a 20 mile run (no surprise) to raise funds for the Railway Children charity. Details can be found here (Added by: Mark Fitz)
Clare from the Goyt Valley Striders is organising a 'just for fun' orienteering event next Tuesday 8th. To use Clares words: "The start will be 7pm, from the layby at the bottom of Long Hill. Everyone is welcome and its suitable for all ability levels - slower runners who plan carefully can beat faster ones who overreach themselves on this event! A compass would be useful but you can do it without one. The idea is to get as many control points as you can within 60 or 90 minutes (a long and a short event) but a late return will cost you points! Prizes will probably be chocolate-based."
I need to check if the choc is Green and Blacks, but either way, it sounds like a fun event. If you're interested, please let either Rick Houghton or I know, and we will contact Clare for maps, etc. (Added by: Mark Fitz)
Just a reminder that entries close for the High Peak 40 Mile Challenge on Friday (4th September). This ultra is part of the Vasque Ultra Running Series (runfurther.com), and starts/finishes locally at the Buxton Community School. The route passes through the Goyt Valley, Eccles Pike, over Rushup Edge and Mam Tor to reach the half way point just after Castleton. After Cavedale, the route takes in Tideswell, Litton Mill, Millers Dale, Deep Dale, Chelmorton and then back to Buxton via Cowdale. Phew, Im getting tired just typing it! But, it is a great event and definately recommended to anyone interested in a classic local ultra. Entry Forms can be found here (Added by: Mark Fitz)
Many thanks to Sheila for reporting on the events that took place in the Dales over the weekend. It was a great success even if the numbers were lower than we had hoped for. You can now see the photographic evidence. The photos are courtesy of Sheila Bradley. Please click on the following link: Club Away Weekend 2009 - Photos to view the photos. A Big Thank You also to Ros Barrett who pulled it all otgether. (Added by: Stefan Ledin)
A few of us have just had a brilliant weekend up in the Yorkshire Dales! Sheila Bradley has very kindly put together a few words reporting some of the activities.
Sheila writes: "Well, what a weekend! Where do we start? Right from arriving at Horton-in-Ribblesdale on Friday it was clear the weekend was going to be fun. What can you expect with this combination of personalities. Sid & Sid (Suicide & his doggy mate), Andy (Lycra) Wilton & his better half Kath, SupaGran & Meerkat Map Man (aka me & Jim), Annemarie & Juicy Lucy, Jackie (I can hear you!) & Failed Bog-Hopper Graham, Mad Monk Mark & his side-kick Sleepy Si and, a last minute bonus, Wonder Boy Lloyd &, bringing the average age down a few decades, the lovely Aalish, Lloyds 7 year daughter! How could we forget Sasha, butter licker & toast thief extraordinaire? (Sasha is a dog, if you were beginning to wonder).
The weather was glorious, between rainclouds & downpours, the camping barn was something else entirely, the scenery was spectacular and the fun we had was fantastic. Friday brought a 7 mile walk from the barn around the base of Pen-y-ghent, taking in the pub (well there was a storm) before returning to the barn to collect a few more arrivees, then back to the pub. We did encounter some of the camping fraternity in the pub, mostly female, and Sid did his best to fill up spare beds in the barn but thought better of it after nearly losing his tonsils to one buxom Yorkshire lass. The keen runners went for a tough run up Pen-y-ghent the next morning, and others took the Settle-Carlisle railway to Dent & trekked along Dentdale in glorious sunshine to the village where there was a Country Fair. The icing on the cake was watching the fell races, one of the counters in the English Fell Running Championships. We thought we had a few good hills round Buxton but the fell the runners went up must have been a good three quarters of a mile, most of it 1 in 2. Lloyd Taggart, returning his winners trophy from last year, ran strongly to finish 3rd, Simon Bailey was first. The ladies race was equally enthralling & it was astonishing to see how young the first two winners were.
Simon & Mark arrived on Saturday & ran along the Pennine Trail from Malham to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, a fair distance and one to build up a good appetite for the pub later. More arrivees at the barn that night, plus Lloyd & Aalish, meant a packed night at the pub, and some great moments as we watched Sid in full flow with the ladies (watch & weep fellas!).
A big walk was planned for Sunday, and although the weather was iffy to say the least, nothing dampened our spirits. After one false start which entailed a three mile detour, or it felt like three miles, and watching Jim keep appearing on the horizon, head down peering at the map to suddenly look up, look left & look right just like a meerkat guarding the group, then look down & disappear again, we found the Ribble Way & headed over towards the big climb of the day Pen-y-ghent. There are bogs, and then there are Yorkshire Dales bogs, the latter extend over many metres & demand long treks round to find a dry, firm route. Most of us skirted round. Well, most of us! One very clean Graham (beige shorts, bare legs & true Derbyshire grit), decided to try a bit of bog hopping. The scream and squelching sounds told the rest of us he had failed miserably. Its doubtful his shorts will ever see the colour beige again but who cares, the rest of us were doubled up with laughter, especially when dog Lucy tried to investigate his muddy crutch! We suggested he should lie in the river to clean up but he did not seem to relish the idea. Wonder why?
Simon & Mark took the clean trail over Whernside and the views from there were about was good as those from Pen-y-Ghent (nil) but the climb is pretty testing so well worth the effort. Another eventful evening at the pub, with Graham offering his biceps to Annemarie, who politely declined like the well-brought up girl she is, and Sid adopting three intellectuals from Birmingham, he politely declined their invitation to join their card school, guess he felt he didnt want to show them up! There is a definite recommendation for the Crown pub in Horton. The food is great, atmosphere buzzes, and they dont seem to mind a load of noisy nutters from Derbyshire. Where are we going next year? Many thanks to Ros for organizing the barn & rallying the troops to fill the places. Hope you can make it next year Ros." (Added by: Mark Fitz)
Good Luck to all members running the Bullock Smithy this weekend. There will be a course on First Aid tailored to Sports to be held in Buxton (venue to be confirmed) on Saturday 19 September. The course is given by a chap called Paul ? from the High Peak Borough Council. The course is scheduled to start at 09:30 and finish at 16:00. There are 16 places, though some of these have already been taken by junior coaches (Wendy Higginbottom, Steve Finney, Stefan Ledin, Mark Quince). We are also holding back places for Terry Fowler, Paul Drabble, Ros Barrett and Chris Rushworth, who are currently on holiday. The National Cross Country Relay Championships are held in Berry Hill Park, Mansfield on Saturday 31 October. The Women's race consists of three legs of 3 km, while the Men's race is made of four legs of 5 km each. The course is gently undulating and quiet dry (and fast). It is also possible to support the runners at many points due to the nature of the course. Every runner gets an accurate time because a timing chip is attached the ankle. The Women's race starts at 13:35, while the Men are off at 14:15. It is an excellent day out. We have competed in these relays since 2005. Mark Quince is the team manager for the Men's team. The Women's team manager is still to be confirmed and I will post the contact details when I have them. Can we manage two Women's teams and two Men's teams? (Added by: Stefan)
The cross country season is nearly upon us. The first races in our neck of the woods are the Uttoxeter races, which are held on Sunday 27 September. The inaugural Buxton Triathlon was held on sunday 23 August. A number of Buxton runners (past and present) did exceedingly well. Nigel Critchlow finished 11th overall and first in the M35 class (swim: 8:44, T1: 0:49, cycle: 43:36, T2: 0:33, run: 21:45; 1:15:12), Kirsty Ormerod finished 7th woman overall and first in the W20 category (swim: 9:23, T1: 1:27, cycle: 53:47, T2: 0:54, run: 25:12; 1:30:24) and debutant Kath Forder finished 18th woman and second in the W50 class (swim: 9:22, T1: 1:49, cycle: 1:07:17, T2: 0:34, run: 30:57; 1:49:03). Ex-Buxtonians Chris Mellor and Liz Batt finished 10th overall (1st MV50) and first woman, respectively. Well done to Nigel, Kirsty and Kath. Nigel is competing in the Vitruvian Triathlon next weekend (1900 m swim, 85 km bike and 21 km run)! Have a good one, Nigel. Triathlon is good, clean fun. The season is drawing to a close soon, but why not have a go at a (sprint) triathlon next year? (Added by: Stefan)

Race 1 - 3 October 2009 at Lyme Valley, Race 2 - 7 November 2009 at Park Hall, Race 3 - 14 November 2009 at Stafford Common, Race 4 - 12 December 2009 at Westwood High School, Leek. More details and results (after the races) can be found at North Staffordshire Cross Country League website. (Added by: Stefan)
The club has aquired a banner (through Terry Fowler) with Buxton AC on it. Any club member may borrow the banner, which is kept by Terry Fowler so please liaise with Terry (say through the Forum or speak to him directly). We have also purchased a pop-up tent which can be used at races, in particular cross country and larger fell races. The tent can be erected in matter of seconds, though taking it down takes slightly longer. The tent can hold 10 people standing and does not have a ground sheet. The tent will be kept at Sarah Guise's house for most of the year, except during the cross country season when Mark Quince or one of the junior coaches will give the tent a home. Again, the tent can also be borrowed. Please liaise with Sarah Guise in the first instance. Please be careful with the equipment. Please report any problems and/or breakages to Terry, Sarah, Sheila or Stefan when you return the banner or tent. (Added by: Stefan)

Andy Jones of Salford Harriers was the clear winner by more than five minutes. He smashed the course record with 49:05. Matlock AC's Christine Howard was an equally commanding winner of the Ladies race; Christine's winning time was 1:01:30. Well done to Jessica, Jayne, Rick and Jonathan.
Rick Houghton writes: "Thanks to a large bowl of porridge laced with pure maltodextrin for breakfast, and my usual prerace litre of Lucozade ‘Body Fuel’ I was very pleased to come 4th yesterday – maybe it had summat to do with your sprint session too! 58 mins… The winner Andy Jones broke the course record in an incredible 49 mins…(almost 5 minute miling for over 9 miles!). Tough course, well suited to fell runners." (Added by: Stefan)

Terry Fowler has been given the thumbs up from the nutritionist from Lucozade Sport. The equipment has been replaced/repaired after a clumsy footballer ran straight into the laser! The visit involves a 30-40 minute presentation on sports nutrition and hydration, e.g. what to eat and drink before, during and after races and training. There is an opportunity to try out the company's products and you can asked questions and get advice. You can also take part in testing which involves sprinting over various distances. The testing is unfortunately weather dependent so if the weather is wet or the track is too soggy then testing can't be carried out. You don't have to take part in the testing if you don't want. The presentation will take place in the Gothic Hall at Buxton Community School and will start at 18:00 on Monday 20 July 2009. Please come along and support the event. (Added by: Stefan)

We had a very exciting race on Saturday. The race went down to the wire, with Kev Lilley (Sheffield AC), long-time race leader, being overtaken by Stephen McLean (Stockport Harriers) in the last furlong. Kerry Marchant (Staffs Moorlands AC) finished just ahead of Macclesfield Harrier Kath Lamploughi in the Ladies race. The Junior winners were Adam Fletcher and Amy Mellor (Buxton AC), respectively. The team competitions were won by Staffs Moorlands (Men) and Buxton AC (Women). Mick Hall was in attendance and took loads of photographs, please visit Mick Hall Photography. I will post the results plus a more extensive report of the race in the next day or so. A Big THANK YOU to Sarah Guise for organisng the race, to Jo Royle and others for providing sponsorship, to the runners who supported the event and to all club members, friends and families who helped out with the race. Ros Barrett who is organising the Club Away Weekend near Horton-in-Ribblesdale on August Bank Holiday informs me that there are still eight places left. If you fancy an excellent weekend in the Dales, then this is for you. Please contact Ros on Buxton 27695 with your details.
Sincere apologies for the slight technical hitch website that occurred during the week, resulting in the website being slightly dysfunctional.
There was a decent turn out of Buxton runners at this very enjoyable local race which was won by Lloyd Taggart in 36.49. Rick Houghton had a storming run finishing in third place with a time of 40.53. Paul Tutt was 14th in 44.59. Other Buxton runners were: Roland Meylan 56th in 53.11, Rob Wallis 57th in 53.13, Simon Moorhouse 84th in 56.57, Phil Leigh 91st in 57.57, Matt Barlow 93rd in 58.20, Bill Allsop 96th in 58.50, and Sally Kerr 114th in 63.31.

Pride Park Relays are held on Monday 27 July. It is also the Derbyshire Road Relay Championships. The course is nice and flat and lends itself for fast running. The Ladies race consists of three legs of just over two miles each, while the Men's race consists of four legs, also over two miles. The Ladies and Men's relays starts at the same time. Please speak to Nigel Critchlow (Men's team organiser) and Sheila Bradley (Ladies Team organiser) if you want to compete in an excellent event.
The Bakewell Pudding Race is taking place on Sunday 28 June. All finishers will receive a Bakewell Pudding. The pudding that even better after a bit of physical exertion!
Tracy Worth, the race organiser, has informed me that the Chelmorton Chase fell race will not be held in 2009, but will return on Sunday 12 September 2010.
The FRA Relays, which are also British Fell & Hill Relay Championships are held at the Leaps, Kirkdale near Ennerdale in the Lake District on Sunday 18 October. Rick Houghton is canvassing the interest in taking part in the Relays. Please see Rick if you are interested in taking part. The Relays consist of four stages: 1st stage is a solo leg, 2nd stage is a pairs leg, 3rd leg is another leg run in pairs. The 4th leg is a solo leg. The closing date is 1 September.
Macclesfield Harriers are organising an orienteering event called the Polly Lander Memorial Orienteering Trophy in memory of Polly Lander, a keen runner who was diagnosed with Leukemia and died about a year ago. The event is taking place on Wednesday 1 July in Goyt Valley. Registration is from 18:00 at a secret location in Goyt Valley. Location to be disclosed nearer to the time. It's two hour score event, i.e. you try to bag as many points as possible in the two hours. The most awkward controls are worth the most points, but the penalty for getting back to the finish late could be severe. The entry is free, but a donation to Leukemia Research would be most welcome. Please bring a compass and suitable fell running kit. You will be supplied with a 1:20,000 map with the controls premarked. The start is at 19:00 prompt. The organiser requests that we car share as far as possible and informs us that dogs are not allowed due to ground nesting birds in the Valley.
Most of you are probably aware that the weather foiled Rick, Col and Julie's attempt at completing the Bob Graham Round. There is talk of a second attempt while they are also supremely fit and the nights are short.
Derbyshire Schools County Track & Field Championships were held at Moorways Stadium in Derby last weekend. All information I have to hand is that Zoe Bayley won the Senior Girls' 800 m and Alex Airey was second in the Junior Boys'(?) Long Jump. Well done, Zoe and Alex. Chris Rushworth and one or two others from Buxton were competing. I will bring you more information when I have it.
Sarah Guise, the race organiser, are asking members and their friends and families if they can help out at the race. Jim Bradley is organising the marshals; please can anyone interested/willing to marshal contact jim on Buxton 27939 or 07974 505121. Please let Sarah know if you can help out. We need volunteers to make the race run smoothly and safely. The more, the merrier. Many hands make light work - old Swedish proverb!
I did the Hope fell race a few years ago. It is well worth a go. It's a fast and furious start, followed by a bit of climbing (Lose Hill, I think - it's was all a bit of a blur at the time) and a similarly furiously swift finish. The race is held on Wednesday 1 July 2009. The start is at 19:30 from the Hope Sports Field. Entries on the day for £4, with £1 going to Edale Mountain Rescue Team. Please note that there is junior fell race, start at 18:45, and a children's fun run which starts at 18:30.
Rick, Col and Julie are having a crack at the Bob Graham round this coming weekend. Our dynamic trio are setting out from Moat Hall in Keswick at 18:30 tomorrow. They will be going round in the clockwise direction. We wish them all the best. Please check back here for an update and a report.
You should notice some dramatic improvements on the website over the next few weeks. Mark Fitzgerald and Simon Moorhouse will be adding material to the website, so it will be more up to date, with more stories and they will better written too.
I have moved the news from the first half of May 2009 to the News from 2009 page.
We have had an invitation to take part in the Exmoor 30:30 challenge. A team of five are required to carry 30 lbs for 30 miles across Exmoor. The event is held in aid of St John Ambulance, Royal British Legion, Walk for Heroes and Army Benevolent Fund. The entry is free, but each team needs to raise £1,000 in sponsorship money for its elected charity. Please visit the Exmoor 30:30 Challenge website for more details of the event.
We have had a request for volunteers to help out at the New Mills Triathlon to be held on Sunday 28 June 2009. It will be a fairly early start, but the whole event will be over by lunchtime. Please contact me, Stefan, if you are interested. I will then pass on your names to the Organiser.
Alex Airey ran a speedy 26.11 s in the 200 m and 12.76 s in the 100 m at the third BMC Open Meeting lasy Tuesday. Terry Fowler set a new PB with 2:17.21 in the 800 m when he finished second in his heat at the same meeting. These events are really good, so please have a go if you fancy a spot of track racing.
Rob White's excellent form continues as he finished second in the Bramhall Park 5 km race this morning. Rob also set a new PB with 17:53. Nigel Critchlow finished 9th in 18:54 and Jonathan Sewell was not far behind Nigel in 12th place with 19:04. Well done, lads!
Please find the updated results by following the link Results of Buxton Half Marathon. These results are the official ones, I believe. Also, there have a lot of very complimentary words from people who took part in the half marathon.
We are very grateful for the continued support of Lomas Distribution and Buxton Water. The provisional results of the Half Marathon are now available for download; please click Provisional Results of Buxton Half Marathon. There are also more photographs from the race; please visit Rob Hanlon Photos. Please observe copyrights, etc. More photographs to follow soon.
Sarah Guise, the Organiser of the Carnival 5-mile road race has provided another route for online entry to the race. Please click Online Entry Buxton Carnival 5 2009 in order to enter the race online.
I would like to take the opportunity to say a BIG Thank You to Simon Moorhouse and Phil Leigh for organising the race in such a splendid fashion, to Norman Taylor for his brilliant race commentary, to all those who helped marshalling and/or carried out other duties prior, during and after the race, to Pavilion Gardens for letting us use the Bandstand, and last but not least all the runners who supported the event. We had around 350 entries, which is excellent.
It turned out to be a scorching hot day in every sense of the word. The sun was beating down on the runners and it was hardly any breeze to talk of. A few runners suffered with early signs of heat exhausion and dehydration. To my knowledge, all those runners have since made a full recovery. The winners were Mark Powell from Owls in Leicester and Christine Howard from Matlock AC. Both were on course to break the course records. Mark Powell came within seconds of succeeding, while Christine Howard slowed marginally towards the end. There were several excellent performances by Buxton runners; Rob White was 14th overall in 1:28. Rob was closely followed by Paul Tutt, Nigel Critchlow and Ben Simnett. Buxton and District AC clinched the Team Prize in the Mens. Jim Bradley, race organiser extraordinaire, won the MV65 prize and Heddle Munday, also of the Buxton club, won the first local female prize. I am a bit hazy on the times, because I didn't have time to write them down. Fear not, the official results will be out very shortly. In the meantime, there are some photographs that you might like to check out. Firstly, Mick Hall was covering the race; please visit Mick Hall Photography to view and purchase photographs. You can also view a slide show or stills of my photographs. More photographs to be uploaded in the very neat future.
There is a Triathlon in Matlock which is eminently suitable for newbies. It is not prohibitively expensive to enter and it is quite local so why not have a go? Please click Matlock Triathlon to download the entry form.
This was the first of three races in the Hayfield May Madness weekend. Our sole representative was Don O'Brien who finished 11th in 24:10 and took the MV50 prize. Other notable performances came from Lloyd Taggart (first) and Simon Coldrick (fourth) and Jackie Lee (first). Lloyd and Jackie won the three-race series and Simon finished second. At Bollington on 11 May, Robert Wallis finished 52nd in 52:02; Robert was our only participant in that race. Young Steven Ramsay competed in the Burbage Skyline race where he finished 95th out of 275. Steven's time was 50:13.
Eyam's half marathon is ranked up there with the Buxton half marathon in terms of toughness. Five brave Buxtonians took up the challenge. Steve Claye was first back in 42nd place (but 3rd MV50) in 1:32:25. It's good to see Don O'Brien back in racing mode; Don finished 88th in 1:38:15. Steve Kenworthy, our half marathon specialist, was our next runner to finish in 121st place with 1:42:12. John Davies, fresh from his London Marathon exploits, finished 202nd in 1:49:38. Bill Allsop finished shortly behind John; Bill was 247th with 1:53:37.
The first of four races in the Stoke City Parks Grand Prix was held at Longton Park. In the 2 km race, Bradley Fowler finished 31st with 8:00. In the 3 km race, Chris Rushworth, now competing for Macclesfield Harriers, came second with 10:11; Chris had a hectic weekend of racing so felt a bit jaded. In the 5 km race, Terry Fowler finished 34th with 19:07 and Mark Quince was 43rd with 20:34; Terry and Mark had also competed at the County Champs the previous weekend. Kath Lamplough, also representing Macclesfield Harriers, was fifth lady in 19:18.
Sarah Guise made her debut over the marathon distance at the White Peak Marathon last weekend. Sarah completed the course in 4:53:18 on a pretty miserable day. Please clock on Sarah Guise at White Peak Marathon. The photograph is courtesy of Mark Fitzgerald.
We had three runners in the Senior race over 10 km. Terry Fowler was first home in place in 231st place; he finished comfortably under 40 minutes with 39:40. He was closely followed by Dave Nutton who recorded a time of 40:36 for 338 place. Sarah Nicholson was our sole female representative; Sarah completed the course in 47:13 and finished 2770th.
It was very unfortunate that these two races were staged on the very same day. The races are held less than 5 miles apart, at least as the crow flies. In Rainow, three Buxtonians excelled: 2. Rick Houghton 34:15, 8. Rob White 37:15 and 23.Jonathan Sewell 39:40. Meanwhile, at Shady Oak: 8. Paul Tutt 41:01, 8. Nigel Critchlow 41:15, 16. Ben Simnett 42:22, 21. Don O'Brien 43:53 (First MV50!), 36. Dave Nutton 46:18, 54. Roland Meylan 48:23, 61. Rob Wallis 48:58, 97. Emma Havenhand 53:43 and 108. Rosalind Barrett 56:18.
Please do not forget that Goyts Moss fell race is being held on Wednesday 20 May. The race starts at 19:30. Registration is at the carpark at Derbyshire Bridge from about 18:00-ish. This is the first race in the Goyt Valley fell race series.
I am sorry that I have to cancel the Friday session at such a short notice. Normal service should resume next Friday (22 May).
You can check out the super-duper T-shirt design for 2009. Click T-shirt Design to see what all finishers will be given. Please beware the file is 3.3 MB! Phil Leigh has also produced a brochure with useful and important information regarding the race, please click Race Brochure (PDF, 950 kB) to read or download the information.
It is now less than two weeks until the Buxton Half Marathon - Sunday 24 May is the big day. Simon Moorhouse, one of the co-organisers, has asked that any member who is not planning to run the race might consider to help with a spot of marshalling or general support. Please speak to Simon or Phil at a club night or send Simon a text/email if you can help out. Many hands make light work - old Swedish proverb!
We may have fielded a smaller than usual number of athletes at the County Championships held at Moorways this weekend. However, the athletes acquitted themselves in an excellent fashion, coming back with medals and settings new personal best performances. Jessica Grindey finished 6th with 15.98 in the U13 Girl's 100 m. In the U13 Girl's 800 m, Jade Ashmore was fourth (2:49.00), Sophie Quince was fifth (2:52.35), Lauren Ashmore was sixth (2:55.08) and Jessica Grindey was seventh (2:57.22). A sprint between Jade Ashmore and Sophie Quince decided the detstination of the Bronze medal in the1500 m race, with Jade taken the Bronze (5:42.39) with Sophie (5:42.63) a mere 0.23 s behind. The U13 Girls 4x100 m team clinched a Bronze medal; the team consisted of Jade and Lauren Ashmore, Jessica Grindey and Sophie Quince. Amy Mellor in the U17 Ladies had a busy couple of days; Amy finished fifth in the 200 m, with 29.03 s, third in the 300 m, with 43.92 s, and won the 800 m convincingly in 2:21.04 - Amy achieved County Standard level in the 300 m and 800 m.
Alex Airey ran 12.46 s in the U17 Men's 100 m; he was fifth in the race. Alex also finished fifth in the 400 m with 58.38 s. Chris Rushworth finished fourth in the U17 Men's 1500 m, and was also awarded with a fine new PB - 4:37.36. Chris was oh so close to breaking 10 minutes in the 3000 m; his time was 10:00.5 and was a mere 0.6 s from a bronze medal - another fine PB taking about 15 s off his previous best. Terry Fowler finished fourth in a very tight Vet 100 m; his time was 13.01 s. Terry secured a silver in the 400 m, recording 57.47 s, and another silver in the long jump, where he jumped 4.40 m, instead. Mark Quince finished fourth in the Male Vet 3000 m; Mark's time was 11:15.39. Well done to all our athletes.
Ros Barrett has made a provisional booking of a camping barn for the August Bank Holiday. The Dub-Cote Barn is located at the foot of Pen-y-Ghent which is about half a mile from Horton-in-Ribblesdale. There are three pubs in Horton and the scenery is stunning. A Three Peaks Challenge perhaps? The barn sleeps 14 people and the cost per night is £147, so £10.50 pppn. Please let Ros know if you want to come along as soon as possible (Ros's phone number is Buxton 27695 or send her an email/txt). Please check out the camping barn website, by clicking on Dub-Cote Camping Barn. Further details may be found on the forum under the Social thread.
Colin Wilshaw, Rick Houghton and Julie Gardner cordially invite all those interested in a Lake District weekend to witness the trio's Bob Graham jaunt on 5-7 June. The Bob Graham round is a 70-mile tester, involving the bagging of 42 peaks and ascending 27,000 feet in the Lake District - all to be completed in 24 hours (ideally). The trio will leave Moot Hall in Keswick at 18:30 on Friday 5 June with the aim to be back at Moot Hall no later than 18:29 on Saturday night. The Thirlspot campsite is the HQ; the campsite is located a few miles from Keswick. As an added attraction as if the Bob Graham round and the lovely Lake District are enough is that there is a Beer Festival in Keswick. Can't say fairer than that.
Young Steven Ramsay is back in fell racing mode. Steven used to show us oldtimers a clean pair of heels a few years back when he was our best fell runner. Steven finished a very creditable 25th out of 288 in the Tigers Todger race.
The Club Championship races have now been confirmed. There is a large number of races so I will therefore ask you to view the list by clicking Club Championship Races 2009. Please note that the next two races are Rainow '5' and Shady Oak, which by unhappy coincidence are held on the same day, Wednesday 13 May. The next championship after these two is Eyam Half Marathon on Sunday 17 May. Please remember to get a set of official race results and send them to Nigel Critchlow, collator and coordinator of the Championships. The rules have been changed slightly since last year. I shall post them here in the next couple of days. Finally, Terry Fowler will be collating the results for the "Most Improved" runner category. More details to follow shortly.
These are the correct dates for the four-race Stoke City Parks Grand Prix series: 12 May - Longton Park, 9 June - Tunstall Park, 14 July - Fenton Park, 18 August - Hanley Park.
Mark Fitzgerald has asked me to remind you all that the Goyts Moss Fell Race will take place on Wednesday 20 May. It is the first race in the three-race Goyt Valley fell race series. Mark is also asking if anyone who can/would like to help out at the race can get in contact with him.
The Relay fever continues. Nigel managed to put together two four-man teams for the Livingston Relays in Loughborough. Alas, we did not field a Ladies team. Our first team finished eighth and our second team finished 19th out 22 complete teams. Mighty fine performances by all our runners. The individual times were as follows. Buxton "A" - 73:59: Nigel Critchlow 17:59 (10), Rob White 17:28 (6), Steve Claye 19:12 (8), Simon Harden 19:17 (9), Buxton "B" - 80:29: Daniel Feely 19:40 (19), Ian Francis 20:29 (19), Matthew Barlow 20:59 (20), Dave Nutton 19:21 (19). Winners of the Senior Womens and Men's relays were Charnwood AC. Well done to Nigel for organising two teams and to the runners who took part. The full results can be found here Livingston Relays 2009 Results.
The British Milers Club (BMC) are promoting a set of graded Open Meetings at the Trafford track on Tuesdays throughout the Spring and Summer. There is an extra incentive in that they use electronic timing!! The club fielded three runners. Alex Airey competed in the 100 m and the 400 m and recorded 12.64 s and 60.01 s, respectively. Terry Fowler competed in the 400 m and the 1500 m; Tery's times were 57.74 s and 4:51.18. Mark Quince competed in the 1500 m; he completed the metric mile in 5:13.62. Kyle Fowler shows that the injury troubles are well and truly behind him with a fine performance in the 1500 m, where he took 3 s off his PB with a 4:07.69. Well done, everyone.
Some of you who read the Fellrunners magazine and regularly compete over the fells will probably be familiar with the Devine familay, Gary and Debbie, who compete for Pudsey and Bramley. The Devines are opening a guest house in the Pyrenees, handily placed for running, walking and cycling. They are now taking bookings. Please follow the link, Pyrenees Haven for further details.

Four Buxton runners took part in the first Club Championship race of 2009, which was the inaugural Goyt Valley 10 km race organised by Wilmslow Runing Club. Mark Quince came 61st in 49:18, Mark Fitzgerald was 90th with a time of 54:29. Sarah Guise was the first Buxton woman home; Sarah finished 111th with a time of 57:56. Ann Roberts was our fourth runner finishing afew places behind Sarah; Ann came 122nd with 59:13. There were 174 finishers.
Three of our athletes travelled to Northwood Stadium on Sunday. Amy Mellor was very busy, competing in the 100 m and 200 m as well as in the 800 m. Her times were 14.3 s, 29.6 and 2:21.6, respectively. Amy set PB in the 100 m and 200 m and wasn't that far off her PB in the "half mile". Chris Rushworth took part in the U17M 1500 m, aka the metric mile. His time was 4:46.7, another performance pretty close to his PB. Coach Terry Fowler ran the 1-mile in 5:21.6. Very good performances at the very beginning of the season.

The rest of the races in the Championships will be announced in the near future.
We had an excellent day out at Moorways Stadium today. Our young athletes did very well. Alas, the results were not posted by the time we left. I will ensure that these are posted on our website as soon as they become available. I can say that we had one winner - Lily Davies won her heat of the 80 m. Also competing were Eve, Jade, Jessica, Joe, Lauren and Sophie.
Runners taking part in London Marathon has raised millions of pounds for various charities and 2009 will be no different. John Davies is running for Children with Leukemia. Please click on the link John Davies - Children with Leukemia, if you would like to sponsor John. Phil Leigh is raising money for Buxton Mountain Rescue Team. New boy Rob White has really thrown down the gauntlet to the rest of us with a scintillating 1 mile effort at last Wednesday's Derby Midweek races. Rob finished an excellent 3rd and posted a 4:55 clocking!!! He had shot his bolt by the time the 5 km race started and did not do himself justice. His 5 km time was a more modest 20:45. Rob will be considerably quicker when he doesn't run a PB mile 15 minutes before the start! Rob is one of the runners to watch this summer. A certain Tim Don, represented GB in Olympic Triathlon in Beijing last Summer, won the 5 km race in 14:33. A bit quick.
I have added the Derbyshire Track & Field Mini League dates to the Upcoming Races page. The dates and venues are: 18 April 2009 at Moorways Stadium, Derby; 27 June 2009 at Moorways Stadium; 4 July 2009 at Mount St Mary's College, Spinkhill; 8 August 2009 at Moorways Stadium.
We have had an invite to the Broxtowe 5 km race which is being held on Friday 15 May with 19:00 start. The race is being held in Bramcote Park, Bramcote in Nottingham. The entry fee is £ 5.00 / 7.00 (unattached). Please follow the link to download the entry form - Broxtowe 5 km Entry Form [PDF, 2.1 MB]. There is also 1 km Fun Run for the youngsters.
You can now enter the Buxton Carnival 5-mile road race online at Runners World. Please follow the link in the left hand column; the link can be found in a light blue box under the heading Buxton Carnival '5'. You can of course print out the entry form from our website if you prefer the old way better. Alternatively you can also enter on the day, for a small extra charge.
We have been invited to take part in the Peak District Relays to be held on Saturday 13 June 2009 around Hathersage. The relay consists of 20 legs ranging in length between 1.5 km and 9 km. Runners may double up, e.g. run more than one leg. There is a points system, based on the runner's age and gender, to even things out a bit. Also the points for each team must sum to 20 or more. The relays are very informal and are organised this year by Sandhurst Joggers.
Sheila Bradley has kindly forwarded a set of photographs taken at the recent Northern Road Relays. Please click on the link photographs from Northern Road Relays (slideshow on Flickr). The photographs are quite large. I might have to prune them if the loading takes too long.
Mick Hall has kindly provided the dates and venues for the Summer Series. The first race is on Thursday 11 June at Tittesworth Reservoir. Please go to our Upcoming Races page for all venues and dates. You can now also enter online, just click on Summer Series Online Registration (this applies only to non-SMAC runners). Please note that the distances quoted on our website are not necessarily correct; this will be rectified shortly. Correction of date: the Meerbrook 15 km race will be held on Sunday 9th August 2009 and not as given on this website earlier.
There will not be a speed session this Friday, 10 April. Normal service will resume on Friday 17 April. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
The managed two top ten performances in the recent Edale Skyline. New boy Dave Aucott finished fifth in 3:04:55, while Rick Houghton was nineth overall and first MV40; Rick came home 38 seconds behind Dave. John Davies also had a run out and finished 210th with a time of 4:35:04. Andrew Sims was 241st and Dave Forshaw was 249th; Andrew's and Dave's times were 4:53:45 and 5:12:32, respectively. Well done to our five intrepid competitors. Colin Wilshaw also had a good in 67th place (3:37:56). Julie Gardner, like Rick and Colin, used the race as part of the build-up towards their attempts at completing the Bob Graham round in early June; Julie finished 107th in 3:55:02.
The club had four runners taking part in Wolf's Pit fell race, held for the first time this year. Dave Aucott finished 10th in 44:36, new boy Rob White (in what I believe might have been his first fell race) crossed the line in 53rd place (and a time of 52:38), Bill Allsop completed the course in just under the hour, in 59:50, which earned him 115th place. Our fourth runner was Nick Stone in 142nd place with a time of 63:02. There were 195 finishers - not bad for a first time race!
Mark travelled to Paris, that's France and not Texas, at the weekend to take part in Paris Marathon. Mark completed the course in 3:47 and seemed quite content with the run.
Please note that the next committee meeting will be held at the Railway on Wednesday 15 April. The meeting will start at about 20:15. We are hoping we will have access to the Function Room, but there are no guarantees. Topics for discussion are the Half Marathon, the Carnival 5-mile race and the Club Championships (races and format). All members are welcome to attend the meeting.
This is to my knowledge the first time in a very long time we have managed to field a twelve-man team for the Northern Road Relays. We also had a strong Ladies team too. Unprecedented!! Well done to Kirsty and Nigel, our team managers, and to all those who took part. Sheila's comment was that "it had been a Grand Day Out. We must do this again!" Hear, hear. The Northern six-stage and four-stage road relays are held in September/October. There are also veteran's road relays. May I remind you of the Livingston Relays in Loughborough (3 May) and Pride Park Relays in Derby (27 July - date to be confirmed).

News from the first half of March 2009 has been moved to our News 2009 page.
First of all, a recap of the Ashby 20-miler last weekend. Dave Nutton, Roland Meylan and Caroline Taylor competed in this not-at-all flat race. Caroline's time was 2:45:22 which earned her 211th place. I couldn't find the lads in the results, but I think they did about 2:36-2:38. The Wilmslow Half Marathon was held today. Nigel Critchlow was the first Buxtonian home in 1:22:47 (154th place) and just short of a PB. Dave Nutton went under 1:30 with 1:29:12 and 306th place. Roland Meylan shaved four minutes off his time from Milton Keynes; he recorded 1:34:37 (526th). In 846th place, Simon Moorhouse went under 1:40, with 1:39:37. Caroline Taylor crossed the line in 1:48:09 finishing in 1566th overall. Ann Roberts came home a few minutes after Caroline; Ann's time was 1:57:13 (2354th). Sarah Guise was just behind Ann; Sarah's time as 1:58:05 (2444th). The Edale Skyline race was held today, but I don't have any details yet. I will provide these as soon as I have them. We had one representative in the Lad's Leap race, namely Robert Wallis who finished 54th with 1:08:26. Mark Fitzgerald finished 34th in the recent Grindelford Gallop race; he finished in 3:01:14.
I am very happy to remind you that we will go over to British Summer Time during the night between Saturday and Sunday; the clock will move on an hour at 2:00 on 29 March. We will loose an hour's sleep that night, but it is well worth it for getting an extra hour of daylight in the evenings I'm sure you'll agree. I also take it as a sign that Spring might be here soon. I live in hope!
Terry Fowler was our only representative at the Derby Midweek races over 1 mile and 5 km last week. Terry covered the 1 mile course in 5:38 (for 17th place) but that was only his warm-up for the main event, e.g. the 5 km where Terry finished 48th with 18:59. Coincidentally, the mile race was won by Josh Moody. Also, there was a blast from the past in the 5 km race where the wunderkind of the early nineties, Kevin Farrow, finished fourth. The next set of races are on Wednesday 15 April, if you fancy having a go. Alternatively, the Stoke City Parks Grand Prix series starts in Early May.
Sheila Bradley would like to remind anyone who hasn't renewed their subscription for 2009 that the deadline of 31 March is fast approaching. Sheila will register those athletes who have paid their subscription with England Athletics shortly thereafter. Please let Sheila know whether or not you intend to rejoin the club. Sheila is at most club training sessions or can be reached on Buxton 27939.
The County Track & Field Championships are held at Moorways Stadium in Derby on the weekend of 9 and 10 May 2009. There will be a full complement of events, except race walking. Please click on County Track & Field Champs 2009 - Entry Form [pdf, 131 kB] to download the entry form. Please note that the closing date for entries is on Friday 17 April 2009. No late entries or entries on the day will be accepted.
The Livingston Road Relays are held in Loughborough on Sunday 3 May 2009. The Ladies team consists of three runners each running a three-mile leg on a traffic-free course. The Men's team consists of four runners each running the same three-mile leg. The closing date for entries is Friday 1 May and there are no entries on the day. Relays are really good fun. We could see this as a stepping stone towards the Pride Park Relays (County Championships) in July.
The next committee meeting will be held on Wednesday 18 March in the Function Room at the Railway. The meeting will start at about 20:15. All members are welcome to attend the meeting.
Stafford Half Marathon is another stepping stone to the London Marathon. The race was held today. Emma Wharton recorded a time of 1:41:18 and finished 430th. Emma was our sole representative, I think.
A number of our youngsters represented their Counties at the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships in Wollaton Park on Saturday. Natasha Lindley made a fine debut in the Champinoships when she finished 230th in the U13 Girl's race. Also making his debut was Matthew Lomas, who came a fine 220th in the U13 Boys race. James Selvey, now representing Chesterfield, finished an excellent 65th in the U15 Boys race. In the U17 Men's race, Chris Rushworth finished an excellent 209th ahead of Josh Moody! In the same race, Kyle Fowler came 80th. In the Senior Women's race, Kath Lamplough came 150th. Emma Wharton ran the Stafford 20-miler where she completed the course in 2:45:22, which earned her a 211th place. Meanwhile, Lloyd Taggart and Jackie Lee competed in the Half Tour of Pendle, where they finished fourth and third, respectively. Dave Nutton and Roland Mylan travelled to Milton Keynes to compete in the MK Half Marathon; Dave's position was 302nd with a time of 1:32:30. Roland finished some six minutes behind Dave - 539th place and 1:38:49.
A new Athletics website has been launched. You will all sorts of information on this website. It is not GB-centric. Please follow the link: www.All-Athletics.com.
Please find below, Colin Wilshaw's report from the High Peak Marathon. Many thanks to COl for his report. I would like to encourage members submit a report on their racing or training exploits.
Sat in a car at 22.35 on a Friday evening in Edale seemed a strange start point for a race. But here we were a collective group of runners (all highly tuned, trained well that what Simon told me...
After the kit check and being issued with dibber we had 15 minutes of waiting and contemplation of have we got enough food, water did we know the way. Only the next 15 hours would know.
So at 23.07 Simon M, Paul, Will and I left the warmth and safety of edale village centre to embark on the challenge ahead.
A steady jog along the road and our first incident Simons rucksack burst open and spilled most of his contents on the road, after a hurried panic we refilled it and headed up the path Hollins cross, as we were climbing it felt slightly surreal as we were accompanied with several other teams all appeared to have smaller ruck sacks then us and bigger torches. Next was the path to lose hill and with a couple of paths to choice from a few teams stopped to check maps but we were locals and knew this section well. Keeping a slow but steady pace the time and distance passed quickly and we were heading towards the next check point Win Hill. On the climb we took a moment to look back towards lose hill and the sight of 30 odd teams behind us heading up and down was an impressive sight. From Win hill we had a tricky little decent Parkin Clough. Where a couple of slips and falls by the team gave us a worrying reminder that it could end as soon as 4 miles in of a 40 plus run. The next section to High Neb was good steady walk, although most other teams were running up this section, we held our ground and maintained our steady walk. Rick Houghton and his fellow fast boys past us, as did a Goyt valley, Buxton residence team, in fact at one stage it felt as if all the teams were passing us, although the had set off up to half a hour after us. The run from High neb to Moscar went well and we ran all the way, At Moscar we were greeted with about 15 teams refuelling and tons of jam, cheese sandwiches. Then it was down to cutthroat Bridge, this was slightly hampered by the lose of some spectacles and the run back up the road, with plea for following teams to No stepping on glasses and have you seen any. Many said yeas about 50 metres further up the road. Glasses found and away again, then we were passes by a team carrying blow up dolls. (strange these runner types).
Then it was onto Derwent moor and the clag come down, we managed to navigate our self well to across the moor to last lad and keeping a steady pace. Then not far from check point Simon had a couple of falls slips, one of which was quite nasty but we decided to keep going, just administer “brofen” and encouragement. However, with time and no doubt a little pain for Simon our pace slowed and a quick check at Lost lad showed that we were losing time on our schedule. The short section to sheepfold worked well and then it was the climb back up to the edge and on to cut gate end. As the clag was quite heavy and team appeared to be heading in slightly different direction were ran on a bearing and stuck to it and hit margay hill spot on (that luck for you). The ground was know getting more and more spongy and we were entering the bog monster home ground from Outer edge to snake road. Mindful of this we left the check point and as will said this is about where he had been bogged, I stepped into a void straight up to my thigh, With assistance from will and ensuring that my shoed were still on my feet he pulled and quenched me out. The smell you get on you clothing is quite unique from bog 4 feet deep. Millions of years of rotten, leave the rest to my imagination. For the next few hours it was a continual jump, squelch all the way to Wainstones, with visibility at it best 50 metres at times , our only navigation problem, when we were suddenly surrounded by teams saying were lost and that had a effect on our confidence but after a few minutes we were certain we knew where we were. But the other teams headed in the opposite direction. One of those teams included a hayfield local and knowledgeable chap, and that makes you question you own decision as they wander off. But we then found the Pennine way mark and safely at wainstones, then a gentle jog down to the snake pass. Here we were greeted with a veritable feast of delight, drinks sandwiches, cake after a refill; we headed of to Mill Hill. This section is along a paved path all the way to William clough, after the ground on Bleaklow it initially felt better, but after a couple of minutes, in fell shoes and been on our legs for 91/2 hours. The reason I know it 91/2 hour is that at the last checkpoint we were able to hear on event radio that the first team had finished. Oh well, on we must go. Moral and conversation at this stage was again returning for short periods but we all knew that we had 10 or 11 or 14 miles. Strange that we had recced the route on several occasions and didn’t know how far we had to go, just that it would be a few more hours. Getting to the plateau of kinder we all realised that was our last long climb and apart from few little hills it was all down hill so to speak. Just before kinder downfall we passed a team who were contemplating retiring, due to one member being almost blind as a result of contact lens problems. We plodded on and made good progress towards Jacob ladder, the weather was know clear blue skies and a number of walker and fellow teams were clearly visible from brown knoll. Suddenly we were greeted by two Buxton runners who joined us for the short jog along to Mam tor. Nearly there just hollins cross again, then down the hill to edale and the finish. A team past us and we attempted to cling onto them until the descent. Mid day was fast approaching and with a little encouragement from all we shuffled down the hill, the pain in your lower limbs after this amount of time is long lasting on a descent, and blister feel eve more painful.
Finally we hit the road and just 500 yards to the finish we all pack together and run into the car park and then the village centre FINISH. Dibber in.
At first they was silence then the reality hi us that we had done it and in a time of 12 hour and 56 minutes, and for HPM virgins a good time. Also many of the team that passed us in the early stages cam in some 1 hour after us. That’s the beauty of this race, it aint over until the finish..
Both the Women's and the Men's 4x400 m relay teams came away with silver medals. In the Women's 800 m, GB's Marilyn Okoro set off at a ferocious pace (56.4? s for the first 400 m) only to loose out on a bronze medal in the last few meters. She crashed to the track, but was effectively already beaten by the Italian lass and team mate Jenny Meadows. Okoro was in the relay squad so got a silver medal as consolation. In the Men's 800, Sweden's Claesson took a fine third behind Russia's Vladimir Borzakovskij.
Mark Fitzgerald has informed me that Simon Moorhouse was also taking part in the High Peak Marathon. Simon, Colin Wilshaw, Paul Hunt and Will Meredith completed the tough 42-miler in 12 hours and 56 minutes. An excellent performance. Well done, lads. We don't know how Rick got on in the race. Further update to follow.
I thought I should mention Mo Farah's outstanding win in the Men's 3000 m at the European Indoor Championships in Italy. Mo Farah has wintered well and crowned the indoor season with a gold medal. A medal richly deserved after he has already lowered the GB record twice this year. Also noteworthy, at least to me, was that Johan Wissman, Sweden's number one 400 m runner, finally won a gold medal. Johan's time was 45.89 s! The GB athletes are doing well with a number of runners making the finals. Oh, by the way, Dwain Chambers won the 60 m final setting a new European Record of 6.42 s in the process - the controversy runs on!
Spare a thought for Colin Wilshaw and Rich Houghton who are taking part in the High Peak Marathon, a.k.a. Derwent Watershed tonight. It's a 42 mile race around the Dark Peak starting and finishing in Edale. I suspect that Mark Cudahy is also taking part. Good luck to all those running through the night.
Next Wednesday sees the next Derby Mid-Week races. There are two races over 1 mile and 5 km, respectively. Terry informs me that it is a very fast course. I know that Terry and Mark are going. Please contact either if you want to car share or want to find out more about the races. One would need to leave Buxton at about 17.00.
There is an offer of a hotel room for the Friday and Saturday nights of the London Marathon weekend, 25-26 April 2009. The hotel is very centrally located and the cost is a very reasonable £140 for the two nights. The price includes breakfast. Please contact Emma on Buxton 214426 if you want to take over the room.
The domestic cross country season comes to end this Saturday. Wollaton Park is again the host to the Inter-Counties cross country championships, which is the finale to the Cross Challenge, but more importantly serves as the World Championship qualifier! Everyone who is anyone in cross country will be there. Sky Sports will probably broadcast the whole event. It's a cracking event. The course is compact enough so that you can jog aruond and support the athletes at a number of locations. Amy Mellor, Chris Rushworth and Kyle Fowler are running.
The Northern Road Relay Championships are held at Woodbank Park, Stockport, on 5 April 2009. Relays are good fun and these are no different. The only snag is that we need a rather large number of runners. There are six stages in the Ladies relay and 12 stages in the Men's race. Ladies who would like to run should speak to Kirsty Ormerod. Men who would like to compete should contact Nigel Critchlow. Please let Kirsty and Nigel know of your wish to compete as soon as possible. The relay championships could not be held much closer to Buxton than this!
I have updated the dates for the fell races and the Vasque Ultra Running Championships on the page of upcoming races, please see Upcoming Races. The only race for which I currently do not have any details is Crowden Horseshoe. If anyone knows if this race is on this year, please let me know the date. I am awaiting the venues and dates of the Stoke City Parks Grand Prix series and Staffordshire Moorlands AC's 10-race summer series. I will bring you the details as soon as I have them. Furthermore, I still need to update the road races and track & field competitions.
Cheadle 5-mile road race was held on Sunday. Steve and Annemarie Claye and Kath Lamplough, who is now a free agent, took part in the race with the following result: 22. Steve Claye 31:16, 25. Kath Lamplough 31:28, and 101. Annemarie Claye 41:26. Meanwhile in Congleton the Cloud Nine fell race was being held. Four intrepid Buxton runners took part in the race. New boy Rob White had a good run. The results were: 32. Rob White 1:03:28, 50. Ben Simnett 1:06:30, 279. Bill Allsop 1:27:27, and 368. Jayne Denby 1:36:02. Winner of the Men's race was another Buxtonian, Lloyd Taggart, whose injury now is hopefully fully healed. Winner of the Ladies race was Olivia Walwyn, who finished an excellent 12th overall, with Jackie Lee, part of the Dynamic Duo, in second. Well done to all those who raced.
I have provided links to the entry forms and online registration for the Buxton Half Marathon and Buxton Carnival 5-mile road race from the home page. This is in preference of the upcoming races box, which I in any case did not keep up to date. I welcome any comments from the users.
You will also find a link to the Run Britain website, which will provide you with essential information regarding running training, gear, etc. - the website is run by United Kingdom Athletics (UKA).
Paul Weir, one of our new members, is working as a personal trainer. He is more than willing to discuss all manner of training, e.g. not necessarily just running training. There will be a topic on the forum for Paul. Alternatively, you can contact Paul via email, sweatandsmile (at) googlemail (dot) com, or on his mobile (07914 817073) if you want to have a more private chat with him. Apologies to Sophie Quince for missing her out in the results. Sophie finished 337th in the U13 Girls race. Kyle Fowler competed in the U17 Men's race, where he fininshed 85th. Kyle represents Staffs Moorlands AC. Well done, Sophie and Kyle!
Three Buxtonians travelled to London to take part in the English National Cross Country Championships at the spiritual home of Cross Country, namely Parliament Hill. I raced there when I was competing for the College in the London Colleges Cross Country League and can attest to the loveliness of the course. Enough reminiscing, Chris Rushworth had a storming run in the U17 Men's race when he finished 155th out of 285 finishers. Terry Fowler and Mark Quince took part in the Senior Men's race where they finished in 887th and 1182nd place, respectively. There were 1455 finishers in the Men's race. Chris', Terry's and Mark's performances were mighty fine as all the best cross country runners turn up for the nationals. Well done to Chris, Terry and Mark. Also running well was Amber Valley's Tamara Armoush in 7th place in the U17 Women's race.
Please note that the next committee meeting is being held on Wednesday 18 February 2009 in the Function Room at the Railway. The meeting will start at 20:15 or thereabouts. All members are welcom to attend the meeting. Topics for discussion are Club Championships 2009, Affiliation and Constitution. Terry Fowler will also report on a invitation from Staffordshire Moorlands AC about closer cooperation. A meeting not to be missed!
Terry Fowler will lead a structured session on Wednesday 18 February. We will meet as usual at the Railway for 19:00. All members are welcome to take part in Terry's session. At least one other group will go out for a regular Wednesday run, so fear not you don't have to do a speed session if you don't want to.
Swedish high jumper Linus Thörnblad set the World best mark indoors tonight when he cleared 2.36 m in a competition in Banska Bystrica in Slovakia. Thörnblad is Sweden's big hope of high jump glory after Stefan Holm decided to retire last year. Thörnblad showed great promise a couple of years ago. He had a relatively lean year last year, but seems to have his form again.
It is with great pleasure I welcome our three new Level 1 coaches. Chris Rushworth, Ros Barrett and Paul Drabble have attended and passed the England Athletics Level 1 course.
Please note that the next committee meeting is being held on Wednesday 18 February 2009 in the Function Room at the Railway. The meeting will start at 20:15 or thereabouts. All members are welcom to attend the meeting.
We are please to announce that the entry form for Buxton Half Marathon 2009, sponsored by Lomas Distribution, is now available for download. Please click Buxton Half Marathon entry form.
New member Rob White travelled to Bramhall Park for the Saturday morning 5 km road race. Rob's time was 19:40, but that includes missing the start. There's plenty more to come from Rob in the near future. Meanwhile, the very popular Alsager 5-mile road race was held this morning. The results were: 37. Dave Nutton 26:28 (?), 168. Kath Lamplough, 182. Terry Fowler 31:21, 183. Ben Simnett 31:21, 204. Simon Harden 32:04, 217. Dave Nutton 32:17 (?), 303. Emma Wharton 34:29, and 307. Roland Meylan 34:37. The Men's team finished 25th overall. Well done to all those who competed, in particular Dave who had a very busy morning! ;-)))
We had a smaller than usual turn-out from the club, with four runners making the journey to St Helens last Saturday. The results: U13G: 146. Sophie Quince 15:49; U15B: 142. Jack Clarke 14:49; U17M: 111. Chris Rushworth 20:37; SM: 503. Mark Quince 53:29. Well done, Sophie, Jack, Chris and Mark!
It's with great pleasure we welcome the newest member into the Club. Steve and Katherine Vaccarini are now the proud parents of baby Hugo. Steve reports that Mother and Son are both doing well. Many congratulations to Steve and Katherine from all members of the club.
Yes folks, it's that time of year again. The subscription for 2009 is now due. The subscription for this is £17.00 - rather good value as I'm sure you'll all agree. Please pay Sheila Bradley, our Secretary, either in cash or by cheque, made payable to Buxton AC.
It would appear that the usage of the forum has declined over the last few weeks. Please make use of it. It makes the website so much more interactive.
We are still running a Friday night session, where the emphasis is on faster pace running. We meet at the Old Hall end of Broad Walk at 18:30. I tailor the session according to the ability and current level of fitness of each athlete. The session is therefore suitable to athletes of all abilities. Please come along and turbocharge your running pace.
We had an excellent turnout for the Committee meeting tonight. We also a very good discussion of the Club Championship format and which races to include. We have quite a long list of possible races. Please email Sheila Bradley any races that you would like to put forward. The next Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday 18 February 2009. The meeting will take place in the Railway and start at about 20:15. We will finalise the list of Club Championship races at the meeting.
Please note that the next Committee meeting will be held in the Function room at the Railway on Wednesday 14 January. The meeting will start at 20:15 or as soon as the runners get back. The main topic for discussion is the Club Championship format. Shall we retain the same format for another year? Any new, fresh suggestions are most welcome. All members are welcome!
Sheila Bradley has kindly sent me a set of photographs from the weekend's Championships. Please click on Photos from Derbyshire County XC Champs 2009 or Slideshow of Photos from Derbyshire County XC Champs 2009 . The photographs are courtesy of Jim Bradley.
The club fielded fewer runners than usual in the County Cross Country Championships which were held in Mansfield yesterday. However, the quality was not in any way impaired. Christopher Rushworth. U13 Girls 3. Natasha Lindley, 10. Isobel Denney, 14. Lauren Ashmore, 15. Sophie Quince, 16. Jade Ashmore. Senior/Veteran Women3. Kathleen Lamplough, 15. Heddle Munday, 16. Sheila Bradley (W50 winner), 18. Kirsty Ormerod, 20. Emma Havenhand, 29. Wendy Bainbrdge; Senior/Veteran Men 45. Paul Drabble, 62. Mark Quince. There will be plenty of Buxton runners at the Inter-Counties in Nottingham in March. Elsewhere, Kyle Fowler finished second in the Staffordshire Couny Championships. Well done to all runners to competed. The full results can be viewed by clicking on Results of County Cross Country championships.
The next Committee meeting will be held in the Function Room in the Railway on Wednesday 14 January. We aim to start the meeting at 20:15, or soon after the runners get back.
The entry forms to this lovely 23-mile leg stretcher in the beautiful Swaledale have been sent out. You need to send of the entry form as soon as possible, i.e. today, if you are to stand a chance to get a race number. Ian Hulse has got a couple of spare entry forms. Please speak to Ian if you fancy giving it a go.
I am very pleased to report that the Fell Runners Association's Fixture Calendar 2009 has just arrived. I can now begin updating the Upcoming Races pages, but for the moment remember that the dates were correct for 2008.
I have moved some of the december news (1-15 December) to our News 2008 page. Please visit the page to reread old news.
I would like to wish all website visitors a very Happy New Year. Now is the time to set your targets for 2009 and beyond, unless you have already done so. Remember to set challenging, yet realistic targets. It's always good to have some intermediate targets that can be ticked off along the way to the ultimate goal. May you live long and prosper!
Speaking of targets, Usain Bolt has set his stall out predicting that he will move the world records for the 100 m and 200 m to new incredible heights - sub-9.60 s and sub-19.00 s. I for one would not bet against him.
