The intention is to move the news items to this file on a monthly basis.
It will be a busy weekend ahead. Tideswell fell race is held on Friday 27 June, The inaugural Whaley Waltz is held on Saturday 28 June and the Bakewell Pudding race is held on Sunday 29 June.
This is a very early warning of the next Club Committee meeting which will be held on Wednesday 3 September at 20:15 in the Function Room at the Railway oub in Buxton. All members are welcome. I will remind you nearer the time.
Rick Houghton, Colin Wilshaw and Mark Fitzgerald were in the Lakes over the weekend supporting three Goyt Valley Striders in their attempt at completing the Bob Graham round in under 24 hours. Clare Griffin completed the 74 miles in 22:52, Will Meredith took 23:36 and Paul Hunt had eight minutes to spare. For those not in the know, the round was devised by Bob Graham and is a challenge to visit 42 peaks in the Lake District in 24 hours. There is about 28500 ft of climbing. Their efforts were even better given the bad weather conditions. Well done to our cousins from GVS!
Geoff Whitehead and Alex Lilburn were our sole representatives in the Chrome Hill fell race on Saturday. Geoff finished 17th with 36:51 and Alex was 32nd with 41:11. Lloyd Taggart and Kate Bailey won the Men's and Women's races, respectively.
The results from the third race in the Summer Series are not out yet. However, we can bring you a selection of photographs courtesy of Wendy Higginbottom. Please visit our Photo Gallery page to view the pictures.
The Swaledale marathon took place just over a week ago. This is lovely race over 23+ miles. Phil Leigh came 109th with 4:39. Simon Moorhouse finished 133rd with 4:52. Jayne Denby recorded a time of 5:56 which earned her 275th place. Ian Hulse was 340th with a time of 6:38. I have updated the Results accordingly. Well done to the four runners who took part.
A couple of errors crept into the standinggs when I prepared them yesterday. These have now been changed. I hope that the standings are now correct. Please click on Club Championship Standings 2008 to view or download the current table. The tables are also presented on the club championship page. Please advise me of any errors that might have crept in.
Jim Bradley has kindly sent me a photograph of the runners who took part in the Bill Moss Memorial fell race last Wednesday. Please visit our Photo Gallery page to view the picture.
I have updated the Championship standings to include the results of the Bill Moss Memorial Fell Race on Wednesday. I hope I haven't made any mistakes with the numbers. Rick Houghton only needs two more wins and he will have retained the Championship. Please click on Club Championship Standings 2008 to view or download the current table. Please advise me of any errors that might have crept in.
Please remember that there is a club committee meeting on Wednesday 25 June. The meeting is held in the Function Room of the Railway pub. We will aim to kick off at about 20.15 or shortly thereafter. All club members are welcome to attend the meeting.

Arthur Gratton, who organises the Summer Series race at Buxton through Temple Woods and around Solomon's Temple, would like to invite us all to race on our doorstep. The race is held on Thursday 3 July. It's lovely course with a few decent climbs; one lap for the juniors and two laps for the seniors.
Jim Bradley, the organiser of the Buxton Carnival 5-mile road race requires helpers and marshalls on the day of the race,i.e. Saturday 12 July. Please contact Jim on Buxton 27939 or send an email to the Carnival 5 Organiser if you can help out.
Sheila Bradley sends this report from the Bill Moss Memorial Fell Race which was held on Wednesday night. Sheila writes ""On a horrendously wild & wet night, both male & female course records were bettered. Rick Houghton improved on his last year's time by 17 second to create a new men's course record in 34.30, and Tracey Greenway, on her first outing over the tough & hilly course, came home in 40.15, improving Liz Batt's previous record by 1 minute 16 seconds. There was a great turnout from the Club, with 23 runners braving the appalling weather. Thanks to all those who took part. Special thanks also to everyone who helped on the night - the race couldn't be held without their invaluable help."
Please click on Bill Moss Memorial Race Results. Please note that the next Club Championship race is the Taddington Lanes race on Tuesday 19 August.
We have had a very good turn-out in the fun run and the junior races. There only a few of our seniors taking part, but I'm pretty sure it will pick up. Kyle Fowler has won both races convincingly. Also going very well are Matthew Lomas, Jack Clarke, Jessie Twentyman, Natasha Lindley, George Smedley-Castle and Thomas Drabble to name but a few. Please visit our Results page for the complete list of the Buxton athletes' performances.
Please do not forget the Bill Moss Memorial Fell Race tomorrow night, Wednesday 18 June. The race starts at about 19.15 from near the reservoir at the top of Bunsal Incline. This is also a Club Championship race.
Sheila Bradley has kindly sent me the foloowing report. Sheila writes: We had a good turnout of 10 runners, weather conditions were perfect to compliment the stunning views of Coombs Reservoir, the Kinder Plateau and, the run's highlight from "Surprise View" at Ladder Hill, the valley of Coombs topped by the western view of the Coombs plateau (Castle Naze side). We were accompanied on the run by Sid and Lucy, who staved off the unfriendly attentions of several ferocious farm dogs to give us time to escape - though Steve and Anne Marie Claye showed true grit by staying back to rescue their own dogs.
The 5.9m run finished in true Buxton AC style by a visit to the Beehive - an excellent run followed by some much needed thirst quenching.
Our next outing is planned for Monday 30 June when, to satisfy John Davies' regular request, a trip to the Roaches is planned - 6.30 at the Pavilion Gardens and car share to Upper Hulme to start the run at around 6.45-6.50.
I have begin to bring the results page up to date with results from 2008. This will obviously take some time so please be patient with me. In the interim, please visit Results page. I have also slimmed down the welcome page to further improve the loading time. The sitemap of our website has also been brought up to date; please visit Sitemap page at your leisure.
The Kinder Trog race is part of the Hayfield Fell Race series. It's a lovely race over 18 miles, though I suspect that it might be slightly shorter than that. The race takes in Lantern Pike, the Kinder plateau, South head, Peep O'day and Cracken Edge. Colin Wilshaw finished 53rd with a time of 2:20:42. Don O'Brien was not far behind Colin in 62nd place and a time of 2:22:10.
The Buxton Carnival 5-mile road race is held on Saturday 12 July 2008. The race starts at 13:50 and precedes the Carnival. It is usually fine weather. There is plenty to do and see for the whole family. There are still places left, so don't delay enter today! For more information, please email Carnival 5 Information with your query.
Five of our runners travelled to Lyme Park to compete in the Boar's head fell race. Dave Nutton was first Buxtonian back in 43rd place with a time of 55:21. Tracey Greenway's time of 57:05 earned her in 61st place overall and she was second in her age group. Only seven places and separated Mark Quince and Bill Allsop at the finish; Mark was 110th in 1:02:54 and Bill came 117th in 1:04:27. Bret Greenway finished two places and 18 seconds behind Bill (119th and 1:04:45). Unusually Lloyd Taggart and Jackie Lee didn't make it a family double, when Lloyd finished third behind team mate Phil Winskill while Jackie won by four minutes. In fairness, Lloyd's been hampered by an injury.
Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia produce a scintillating run over 10000 m at the recent Prefontaine classic meeting in Eugene, Oregon. Bekele covered the 25 laps in 26:25.97 and won the race by a comfortable cushion of 47 seconds! American Brad Walker also produce an exceptional performance when he cleared 6.04 m in Men's Pole Vault.
Sarah Nicholson and Amy Wadsworth have added their names to the list of athletes, which means that we now have a very good ladies team consisting of Sarah, Amy and AnneMarie Claye. Roland Meylan has also said he's keen to race. We currently have one and half men's teams, so I shall be pursuing this over the next couple of weeks. We need eight men to make two teams. We might attempt to run a senior and a veteran team.
I have corrected an inconsistency in the style sheet, which meant that the website had a slightly different appearance when viewed with Internet Explorer. There will be another update soon, but users shouldn't suffer any downtime. I will be addressing some accessibility and compliance issues in the next version.
This is a message from Steve Claye. Michael was released from Hospital at 2:30 this morning. Although still unwell he got to bed about 4am. Michael, Anne Marie and I wish to thank all members present on Wednesday evening for their kindness and concerns to Michael's well being.
I am sorry to announce that tomorrow's session (13 June) will be cancelled. My suggested session would be 12x400 m with 90 seconds recovery, but reduce the number of reps in accordance to fitness, etc.
I have two more confirmed runners for the Pride Park Relays in Derby: Terry Fowler and Mark Sherratt. There is still time to add your name to the list. We urgently require a few more ladies (two at least) to make up a ladies team.
Bill Moss Memorial Fell Race, which doubles as Club Championship race, will be held in Goyt Valley on Wednesday 18 June. The start is on the old railway line by the pond near Bonsall Cob. There is ample car parking on either side of the road. The race is due to start sometime after 19:15. You can either make your way directly to the start or meet at the Railway as usual and then make your way up to the start. There will be a Junior and a Senior race. The former is over about 2 miles, but will only be staged if there is interest amongst the juniors, and the latter course is probably just over 4 miles. Please come along and honour the memory of Bill Moss!
Simon Moorhouse et al. are planning a run from Combs village on Monday 16 June. Meet at 18:25 in the Pavilion Gardens car park for those requiring a lifts, else meet at 18:45 near the Beehive pub in Combs for a run around Combs, the plateau, not the village! The gang are then stopping for a drink in the Beehive. Try to come along, it's a lovely run around Combs and the beer in the Beehive is nice.
Colin Wilshaw has kindly sent me brief reports from the Castleton rtace (Friday 06/06) and the Edale Country Fair race (08/06), respectively.
After the warm evening of Rainow fell race only two hardy soles Colin W and Bill Alsop from Buxton took part in the Castleton Fell race on friday. The clouds were grey but the rain held off throughout the race, which starts in castleton heads to Losehill then Mam Tor then back to Castleton via hollins cross all in only 6 miles. Colin ran in 54 mins and Bill just over the Hour (winning time 41.31).
Then to Edale on Sunday and Colin and Bill were joined by Rick H, Mark Q, Brett and Tracy Greenway in near boiling conditions the race ran up ringiing roger then across to Grindsbrook Knoll then back to edale( 5 miles) All ran good times results soon. However Tracy won her class and Bill won his " Rick also won his but the organizer gave it to another runner by mistake. So three class win out of six is not half bad.
Sheila Bradley has kindly sent me three photos from the Goyts Moss Fell Race and whole load of pictures from the recent Rainow '5' race, which was also a Club Championship race. Please visit our Photo Gallery to check out the latest additions.
Pete Stubbington was our sole representative in the Shutlingsloe race which was held on 26 May. Pete finished 34th overall and first MV50. Well done, Pete. I bet it's those long bike rides what did it! The results of the junior race was not available, though I suspect we might have had a few competitors in that race.
Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba took 5.48 seconds off the Women's World Record over 5000 m at the Golden League Meeting in Oslo. The new record stands at 14:11.15!
Three of our Club Championship races have been held to date, namely the Club Cross Country race, Goyts Moss fell race and the Rainow '5' fell race. The current leaders are Sheila Bradley and Rick Houghton, respectively. You can find the up-to-date standings by visiting the Club Championships page.
You will notice quite a few changes to the website. I have introduced an Archive from which you can access old news articles, photographs and download or view results of Buxton Half Marathon and the Carnival 5-mile race. My aim is to have the results from all editions of those two races. I have also tidied up and reduced the coding in order to speed up the loading of each individual page.
You should not come across pages which refer to 2005, 2006 or 2007. The information should now be as up-to-date in all departments as far as I know; that means that upcoming races and the club championships refer to this year's races and not last years! However, the road race section is still pretty bare. Something I will endeavour to rectify in the next few days.
The news items from the first five months of 2008 have been moved to News from 2008 which you access directly or via our Archive page.
From an accessibility point of view, it is also good practice to colour visited links in a different colour to unvisited links, i.e. the blue links are those sites you have yet to visit, while you have visited the red fonted links. Please try it out and see if it enhances or detracts from your exoerience. I welcome any comments on the subject.
I have just obtained the results of the Rainow 5 race (courtesy of Colin Fray and Steve Temple), which was held on Wednesday this week. This was a club championship race and the turn-out from the club was very good. First Buxton AC male was Rick houghton who finished 5th and just missed out on the MV40 prize by 10 seconds. The first Buxton AC female was Sheila Bradley in 116th place. Please click on Rainow 5 Results 2008. I hope to be able to provide a report soon. Well done, everyone!
It is time to start thinking about Pride Park Relays, which dounbles up as the Derbyshire County Road Relay Championships. It is a lovely little two-mile route around Pride Park and environs in Derby. The Ladies teams consist of three runners and the Men's teams are made up of four runners. The race is held on Monday 21 July 2008 and the start is at 19:00. Please let me, Stefan Ledin, know if you are interested in competing, preferably by 1 July. Annemarie Claye, Dave Nutton and Nigel Critchlow are keen and have put their names down.
There are a number of sprint races at Moorways Stadium in Derby on Wednesday 25 June 2008. There are also 3x800 m relays for women and men and a 3000 m Team race for women and men, with four to run and three to score. Please click on Summer Sprint Series 2008 for further information.
Please note that I gave an incorrect date for the Edale Fell race held in conjunctino with Edale Country Fair. It will be held on Sunday 8 June with an 11:00 start.
Norman Taylor has just confirmed the date for the Taddington Lanes Races. It will be held on Tuesday 19 August. This is a Club Championship race so make a note in your diary. I will provide further race details closer to the time.
I have moved the news from December 2007 to the News from 2007 page. I endeavour to shift news from 2008 into a separate page real soon.
Alan Weeks, the organiser, has kindly sent me an update on the results. The number of runners from the club was slightly down this year. A few got caught out when the race was already full a couple of weeks prior to the race. We didn't have any runners in the Junior race. In the senior race, Andrew Sims was first Buxtonian home in 88th place. Andrew's time was 56:44. Simon Moorhouse, fresh from organising the Half Marathon, finished 184th with 64:16. Simon Bailey, Mercia, won the men's race convincingly by over 3.5 minutes in 38:44. The ladies race was won by Anna Frost, who had a cracker of race and finished sixth overall in 43:00. Anna's winning margin was a staggering 5.5 minutes! It was good to see that Hanno Torn is back running and racing after a long lay-off; this was Hanno's second race having run Goyts Moss a week or so earlier. Hanno finished just behind Andrew Sims in 97th place with 57:23. 297 runners finished the race.
I have had to bring the old photos offline while I rejig the website. Fear not, the old pictures will be available soon. In the meantime, it brings me great pleasure to exhibit photographs from the recent Buxton Half Marathon and Shady Oak. Please visit the Photo Gallery to view the latest additions.
The Rainow '5' race is a Club Championship race and is held on Wednesday 4 June. The Castleton Fell Race is held on Friday 6 June and the Edale Country Fair race is on Saturday 7 June. It is a very busy week ahead.
Please find below a report from the Duddon Valley race. A big thank you to Colin for the report.
Duddon valley is part of the Lakeland classic Trophy series of races and covers a distance of 20 miles and 6000 ft of climbing... This year’s race took part on Saturday 31st May from a small field in an isolated valley, just past a pub. Normally this time of year is not known for it hot weather. But as runners prepared for the start many found shelter under tree at the edge of the start field. The runners consisted of a mix of abilities from ex championship winners and a sole Buxton runner. Although dark peak and Pennine fell runners had a good turn out. And a total of 245 runners made the ranks and number which was announced by the organiser at the start of the race "just in case someone should ask while we were running" strange those cumbrians...
The start from the field led to the first climb to Harter fell along a well worn path and on to the summit (one down six to go). At the stage as with most of my racing the front runners were far far in the distance but I was keeping a steady pace in the middle of the pack. heading over to Hard Knott fell you could see the Cumbrian landscape in all its beauty some I’m told but my concern was to keep an eye on the water opportunities as the temp was raising and we were getting higher. After Hard Knott you drop down from 1800 ft to 1000ft then have to climb back up 1400ft in just under 1.5 miles and it was quite surreal in the base of the valley lookin up at Little Stand and back at Hard Knott to see a hundred runners in a line like ants in this isolated area. After that we headed Three shire stone and the last chance of water and just over half way. Then on to more climbing of Swirl How Summit, at this stage I was beginning to really feel the effects of the heat and could have easily run down the valley to the awaiting river but instead carried on traversing the side of the fells and one to the nearly last of the climb on Dow Crag 2500ft, With the temp seeming to increase and ability to run decrease I came across a bottle of Buxton Water being offered to me by a unknown person who had been given it by a Buxton inhabitant and his daughter to give to a tall balding buxton runner should he come along. Finally the last climb and the 1 mile descent down into seathwaite and the finish line.
As I ran into the finish field, (well you have to) to the applause of the spectators and the already finished runners it reminded me why I had just put myself through 4 hours and 20 minutes of sheer pain, enjoyment, exhaustion, and cramp. But Im not going to tell you go along and try it for yourself.
The winner Simon Booth finished in 2.52hr and I was 135th.
After the race a matter of having a few Jennings Ales in a pub which is situated next to the race finish, and there I sat in splendid sunshine for a good many hours, chatting to fellow runners till the late evening. Camping was also in the finish field and free of charge provided you drank in the pub.
Usain Bolt, the young Jamaican sprinter put a cat amongst the pigeons last night in New York. He upstaged country man Asafa Powell and American Tyson Gay when he set a new World Record, subject to ratification, over the 100 m dash. The new record stands at 9.72 seconds. Bolt must now be considered a serious contender for an Olympic Gold medal. Remember also that Usain Bolt's stronger event is the 200 m. Meanwhile, Susanna Kallur of Sweden opened her campaign by finishing second to Josephine Oniya of Spain in a 100 m Hurdles at the Golden League meeting in Berlin. Miss Kallur would not normally be entirely satisfied with her second place, but her time of 12.54 seconds is much faster than her 2007 season opener. Besides, Susanna Kallur has been injured since the Indoor World Championships in March. Pamela Jelimo of Kenya ran a blistering 1:54:99 in the Women's 800 m and won the race by a four seconds. Great Britain's best sprinter for the last couple of years, Marlon Devonish opened with 10.18 second 100 m. Meanwhile, Tyrone Edgar recorded a legal 10.06 in Geneva. Michael East was somewhat off the pace yet ran a 3:36.48 in a Kenyan dominated 1500 m. Moses Masai of Kenya won the 5000 m in 12:50.55 from Ethiopia's Tariku Bekele, Kenenisa's younger brother, and Ugandan Moses Kipsiro. The Men's Javelin throwing competition was dominated by the strong men of the Nordic Countries with two Finns, one Norwegian and a Swede occupying the first four places. I for one look forward to an exciting Summer of Athletics.
Apparently, there is some football tournament kicking off next weekend. It's not worth watching, just stay tuned to Ahtletics where the real action takes place.
This promises to be a very busy week. The second race of four in Stoke City Parks series is held in Tunstall Park on Tuesday 2 June. The first race is at 18:30. The Staffordshire Moorlands AC's Summer Series kicks off this Thursday, 5 June, with the Tittesworth Reservoir race, which starts at 19:30. I have compiled information that will go out to the Juniors, but is equally applicable to Senior and Veteran runners. Please click on the link for Summer Series Races 2008, which lists dates and venues for the Stoke City Parks and the Summer Series. Further information reagrding the Summer Series, including maps of how to get to the various venues, can be found on Staffordshire Moorland AC's website.
Alas, I have not been able to obtain any information on the Wincle Trout race or the Duddon Valley fell race. I will endeavour to bring news on these races in the very near future.
Please can all club members who intend to renew their subscription, a very reasonable £15 per year and person, send their subscription fee to Sheila Bradley as soon as possible. Sheila will accept cash or cheques made payable to Buxton AC. The club is affiliated to England Athletics (EA) and we need to inform and pay affiliation fee to EA for all our members very soon. We would request that those runners, who are rejoining the club this year, pay the subscription by the end of June. After that date, we will assume that you have resigned from the club.
Sheila Bradley, our hard-working Hon Sec, has requested that all club members, who have an email address, send her an email (sheilaAbradley at aol.com) so that we can ensure that we have an up-to-date email address list. Please remember to replace the at with @ in Sheila's email address when you send the email to her.
Mark Cudahy covered the 120 miles from Tan Hill Inn to the Cat and Fiddle Pub in 31 hours and 27 minutes. Mark had to contend with bad weather, strong winds and lots of rain, and thick mist. His support team also had to negotiate passage on roads across moors that were on fire.
Mark Cudahy completed a Long Distance challenge when he completed the run from Tan Hill to Cat and Fiddle. The route connects the two highest located pubs in England and is 120 miles long. There is about 20,000 feet of climbing and Mark covered the distance in just over 37 hours. A marvelleous feat! Well done, Mark.
Please note that we are holding a Committee Meeting tomorrow, Wednesday 28 May 2008. The meeting is held in the Function Room in the Railway. The meeting will start at 20:15 or shortly thereafter, depending on when the runners get back.
Sincere apologies to the winner Philip Critchlow, who I in the haste renamed Kevin!!! On a more positive note, the Results of the race are now available for viewing or downloading by clicking on Buxton Half Marathon 2008 Results.
We have got the results of the Goyts Moss Fell race, which was held on Wednesday 21 May. The results are courtesy of Mark Fitzgerald. Please click on Goyts Moss fell race results 2008 to view or download the results.
Rainow '5' fell race is the second race in the 2008 Club Championships is being held on Wednesday 4 June at 19:30.
It was very windy when Buxton Half Marathon was run yesterday. However, it was neither too hot, nor too cold and it stayed dry. All in all, readonable conditions. The windy conditions did mean that times were likely to slightly slower. I was in the lead car this year and could follow the development of the race at close quarter. A group of four runners detahced themselves early on, with wor Steve Watson being one of them. However, Steve side-stepped some stones/gravel and strained a muscle and had to abandon the race after about five minutes. Kevin Critchlow forged ahead and built up a decent lead up to Axe Edge. In close attendance was Kevin Lilley some 50 m behind. Kevin Lilley appeared to be the most comfortable of the two leaders running down towards Glutton Bridge as he passed Critchlow and pulled away, by no more than 20 meters or so. The two front runners were locked together as they passed the water station just before Glutton Bridge with about 6 miles to go. Kevin Critchlow appeared to put pressure on Kevin Lilley and had broken away when they had completed the steep climb out of Glutton Bridge. Kevin Lilley was never really completed broken, but namesake Critchlow didn't let up and edged clear. The last couple of miles were fairly uneventful. Critchlow had a quick glance behind him as he entered the final mile, but was safely clear. The positions didn't change with Kevin Critchlow taking first spot from Kevin Lilley. The team prizes were won by Dewsbury RC in the men's competition and by Telford Harriers' Ladies. There were many fine performances by our own runners too. I will post another review with special emphasis on our home runners performance in the very near future. Simon Moorhouse, the Race Organiser, thanks everybody who competed in the race and all the helpers and marshalls, without whom the race would not come off. I would like to thank Simon Moorhouse and Phil Leigh for putting on an exellent race!
I promise to post the results here as soon as I have them. Meanwhile you can relive the experience by visiting Mick Hall's website, which you can reach by clicking Mick Hall's Race Photos.
I apologise profusely for forgetting our third winner of the night. Tracey Greenway was first LV35! Well done, everyone.
The conditions for fell running was near perfect on Wednesday night. Stuart Bond of Tommy's Fell Stars was the runaway winner when he won by over 3 minutes. Stuart was also a mere 11 seconds off the course record which is held by Lloyd Taggart (44:04). Jackie Lee of Eryri Harriers was equally dominant in the Ladies race, winning by six or more minutes. Jackie's time was 52:50 which is an improvement on the course record by about three minutes. It was also very pleasing to see Rick Houghton of Buxton AC finish fourth and first MV40. Rick's excellent form continues. Buxton AC also had two other winners in Sheila Bradley, who was first LVXX, and Alex Lilburn, who was first Junior Man. There was a good turn out from the club. A good time was had by all!
Please remember that the next Committee Meeting will be held on Wednesday 28 May in the Function Room at the Railway. The meeting will start at 20:15 or shortly thereafter. All members are welcome.
Simon Moorhouse and Phil Leigh are still looking for volunteers to help out at the Buxton Half Marathon, which is held on Sunday 25 May.
I mentioned earlier that Sophie Quince had qualified to represent her school/catchment area in a cross country race last Saturday. Ellena Foulkes (not sure about the spelling), from the same school, also qualified and had a good run. Ellena finished 14th out of 50. The Lady Manners schools finished second in both the Girls and the Boys competitions. The girls did us proud.
Simon Moorhouse and Phil Leigh took time out from organising Buxton Half Marathon to run White Peak Marathon last Saturday. The route runs along the Tissington Trail and High Peak Trail (?). The weather was pretty reasonable, being dry, not too breezy and bearable temperature. Simon had a good run and finished 120th with a time well inside 4 hours (3:57:44). Phil felt fresh during the first 10 miles or so, which meant that he opened in too enthusiastic a pace and payed for it the latter stages of the race. Nevertheless, Phil covered the marathon distance in 4:10:21, which earned him 145th place.
Sophie Quince had qualified to represent the Primary Schools in the Lady Manners catchment area in a cross country competition. The race was held this weekend and Sophie finished an excellent fourth out of fifty runners. Menwhile, Amy Mellor ran a very fast 800 m in the National Young Athlete's League, while competing for Chesterfield & District AC. Amy won the race in style with 2:24, which is just a shade slower than her PB from last weekend. Well done, Sophie and Amy!!!
Nigel Critchlow and Mark Sherratt were the two Buxtonians who managed to break the 90 minute barrier in the very testing Eyam Half MArathon which was held today. Nigel's time was 1:28:50 and Mark's time was 1:29:57; the lads finished 27th and 33rd, respectively. Dave Nutton was the next of our runners to cross the line; Dave recorded 1:37:46 for 85th place. Roland Meyland followwed closely behind Dave in 88th place and 21 seconds later (1:38:05). Emma Wharton was fourth lady (and 168th overall) with a time of 1:47:22. Emma was closely followed by Bill Allsop who was 21 seconds (1:47:43) and 8 places behind her. Bill was fourth runner in the MV60 category. The results of the White Peak Marathon have not been published yet. Well done to all those who competed over the weekend.
The first of four races in the Stoke City Parks Hrand Prix series was held in Longton Park on Tuesday 13 May. Our sole representative was Mark Quince who finished 77th with 21:09. There were 141 finishers in the Senior and Veterans race (women and men) over 5 km.
We have an entry form for this year's Carnival 5-mile road race for download. To download the form, please click Buxton Carnival 5 entry form [PDF, 88 kb]. The race is held on Saturday 12 July 2008. The race organiser is Jim Bradley.
A number of our junior athletes competed in a Schools Competition on Tuesday. I have very limited details of how the athletes got on. What I do know is that Chris Rushworth took a full 17 seconds off his PB over 1500 m when he recorded 4:43. Hannah Fenton won her 800 m race, but I haven't got her time. Callum Booth also competed in a 800 m race, where he finished 3rd after finding the early pace very hard. I have already reportedon Kyle Fowler's fine Silver medal in the U17 Men's 1500 m in the Staffordshire Championships last Saturday. Kyle also set fine new PB by running 4:14, which is 12 seconds quicker than his previous best. Well done!
It was a near-perfect night for fast running on this very tough course. We weren't able to defend our team victory from last year as Wilmslow over-powered us. We did have one winner though as Rick Houghton's exellent form continues. Rick won the MV40 prize and finished 5th overall with a time of 38:45. Nigel Crtichlow was next Buxtonian to finish; Nigel came 13th in 41:06. There was a good tussle between Ben Simett and Dave Nutton. Dave saw his chance of over-taking Ben close to the finish. However, Ben realised the danger in time and held off Dave's spirited challenge. Ben finished 27th (44:17) and Dave was two places behind in 29th (44:25). Kath Lamplough was first Buxton Lady in 43rd place; Kath's time ws 46:35. Colin Wilshaw and Roland Meyland finished close behind Kath; Colin was 48th (47:22) and Roland finished 51th (47:56). Daniel Feely was shadowing Roland and finished a mere 7 seconds and two places behind (53rd; 48:03). There was very good packing by the club when Sheila Bradley, Joanne Clay, Bill Allsop and Alex Lilburn finished 78th to 81st, in that order; their times were Sheila - 51:49, Joanne - 51:57, Bill - 51:58 and Alex - 52:12. Emma Havenhand finished 109th with 58:45. Sarah Guise finished bang on the hour in 112th place. 138 hardy souls completed the course. Well done, everybody!
There are a couple of races that may be of interest to our runners. The White Peak Half and Full marathon are held this Saturday. The races are run along the old railway lines. Alas, the two races are full already. Over in Hayfield, there is a lovely little race called the Mount Famine race. It is highly recommended and is part of the Hayfield series. If you fancy a run-out, then Mount Famine's for you!
Simon Moorhouse, the race organiser, informs me that the entry forms are flowing in nicely. However, there are still places left and entries will be taken on the day. Showers facilities will be available at the Buxton swimming pool, which is located adjacent to registration, start and finish, at a cost of 50 pence. Furthermore, there will be a secure kit bag storage at the registration. Keep those entry forms flowing, as this is a cracking race.
John Bunyan of Macclesfield Harriers has kindly send me the official results of the Macclesfield Open Meeting. The results can be viewed and downloaded by clicking on Macclesfield Open Meeting results. The results are slightly garbled, and I hope to bring out a revised version in the very near future.
The Shady Oak 10 km race is held this Wednesday 14 May. There is limited parking near the pub so it's advisable to car share if at all possible. Interested runners can meet from 18:30 in the carpark near the Railway to sort out the car sharing. The runners will then set off from Buxton at 18:45. The race starts from the Shady Oak pub on the Long Hill Road at 19:30.
The first of four races that makes up the Stoke City Parks Grand Prix is held at Longton Park tomorrow, 13 May. There are races for the U11s, U13s and U15s over 2000 m, for the U17s over 3000 m and for Juniors, Seniors and Veterans over 5000 m. Boy and Girls and Men and Women compete in the same races. The races are all on tarmac, so not suitable for spikes.
The Derbyshire County Track & Field Championships were held jointly with Nottinghamshire at Harvey Hadden Stadium in Nottingham this weekend. The weather was very warm yesterday and positively hot today and all this with only a gentle breeze. The club fielded a smaller than usual number of athletes in the Championships, but those who competed did so very successfully. Amy Mellor won our only Gold medal in the U15 Girls 800 m, when she front ran the race in her usual style, all but sealing her victory after about 150 m; Amy was also awarded with a fine PB of 2:22.3, an improvement by about 3 s on the time she set at the Macclesfield Open Meeting two weekends ago. In the U20 Women, Emma Bayley won a Silver in the triple jump with 8.53 m and won a Bronze in the 100 m with a time of 13.9 s; Emma also finished fifth in the 200 m with 29.0 s. Natasha Lindley took a Silver medal in the U13 Girls 1500 m where she recorded a time of 5:37.3; Natasha also competed in the 800 m where she finished fifth, in 2:52.4, and in the 100 m where she finished eighth with 15.6 s. Mark Quince bravely contested the Senior Men's 5000 m race where he finished fifth; Mark's time was 20:11.8. Another Gold medal contender, Terry Fowler saw his hopes for glory dashed when he pulled up with a recurrence of the thigh strain/pull he sustained at Macclesfield shortly after the start in the Senior Men's 200 m. Meanwhile at the Staffordshire County Championships, Kyle Fowler now representing Staffordshire Moorlands AC finished second in the U17 Men's 1500 m behind team mate Jonathan Turnock.
The Shady Oak 10 km race is held this Wednesday 14 May. There is limited parking near the pub so it's advisable to car share if at all possible. Interested runners can meet from 18:30 in the carpark near the Railway departing for the race at 18:45.
Mark Fitzgerald is requesting help with marshalls and helpers for the Goyts Moss fell race which is held on Wednesday 21 May. Please contact Mark on 01298 - 70092 if you can help out. Goyts Moss fell race starts at 19:30 near Derbyshire Bridge.
I rediscovered some photographs that had been kindly supplied to me by Emma Wharton. The photographs show some of our successful marathon runners in their pre-marathon preparation. Please check out the piccies by visiting our Photo Gallery page.
The next committee meeting will be held in the Function Room at the Railway on Wednesday 28 May 2008. We will aim to start the meeting at 20:15, i.e. when the runners get back from the run. All club members are welcome to attend the meeting.
The official results of the Club Cross Country Championship Race which was held on Wednesday 30 April are now available. You can download the results by clicking Cross Country Champs link. You can also see pictures of the competitiors, before the race when they are still clean, and the winners Rick Houghton and Wendy Higginbottom by visiting our Photo Gallery page.
Please note that the Junior session on Monday 5 May is cancelled. Normal service will resume on Thursday 8 May.
The weather looked pretty miserable about an hour before the start. It was raining heavily and the leaden sky promised more rain to come. However, the rain held off and it was a rather pleasant evening come the start. The course was very heavy and slippery after days of wet weather, but it did not deter the 18 runners who took part in the race. Winner of the Men's race was Rick Houghton who had a four minute cushion; Rick's time of 26:43 was a few seconds slower than last year, but the mud and slippery conditions were not conducive to fast times. Wendy Higginbottom was first Lady home in a time of 31:48. Many thanks to Jim and Sheila Bradley, who organised the race. Many thanks also to Geoff Whitehead, Arthur Gratton, Steve Kenworthy and Graham Morson for acting as marshalls. Last, but not least, a Big Thank You to the runners who braved the elements. The final results will be published in the very near future.
Our roving reporter, Colin Wilshaw, has sent in a brief report on the new fell race organised by Dark Peak Fell Runners. Colin writes, "Just three hardy souls from Buxton took part in this new local fell race. The start from Edale Road just outside Hope was on a hill and that was the underlying nature of this race hills. firstly up one side on winhill, down the other side up another side and then down yet another side (didn't realise hills has so many sides) then up the side of Losehill, then down the other side. I think most people get the point now, and all this in only 7 miles.
Paul Drabble was first Buxton runner back 1.19.26 (13th) then Colin Wilshaw 1.28.30 (35th) and having a good steady run was Bill Allsop 1.43.04 (63rd). Just under 90 runners took part and hopefully this race will become an annual event and all for just £4.
Thomas Drabble finished third in the U11 Boys 600 m race and not as stated previously. In-form Kyle Fowler won the 1500 m easily and was never pushed in the race. Meanwhile, Matt Lomas had an excellent run to finish second in the U13 Boys 1500 m race. The official times are not available yet.
The Club had a pretty decent turn-out at Macclesfield Harriers Track and Field open meeting which was held yesterday, 26 April. The meeting being a mere two weeks from the County Championships would be an ideal leg stretcher. The weather was very nice, though a bit breezy down the backstraight. A number of our youngest athletes competed on the running track for the first time in their lives. One of the most emphatic wins of the afternoon went to Amy Mellor who front ran the U15 Girls' 800 m race and blew away the opposition in the first 200 m. Amy was awarded with an excellent 2:25 (inoff. time). Emma Bayley finished equal first and a very close second in the 100 m and 200 m races, respectively. Her times were 13.8 s and 28.4 s. Jessica and Amy finished second and fourth in the U13 Girls' 800 m race. Jessica showed great tactical awareness and sprinted past the girl in the second place over the last 60 m. Jessica's time was 3:07 while Amy recorded 3:20. In the U13 Boys'800 m Bradley Fowler battled well and finished 5th (?) in 3:03. In the U11 Girls' 600 m, Jade and Lauren Ashmore and Sophie Quince finished first, third and fourth. Thomas Drabble competed in the U11 Boys 600 m where he finished fourth after a fine sprint for the line. Liam and Jack Clarke took part in the 400 m. Liam finished sixth with 67.8 s and Jack was seventh with 72.4 s. Terry Fowler was the only senior Buxton athlete to compete. His started well with a fine run in the 100 m, but he pulled a muscle during the 200 m, when he was catching the leader. Hopefully, a bit of rest, ice, compression and elevation will allow Terry to recover for the County Champs. I apologise for the incompleteness of the results. Our athletes competed in other events than those mentioned here. I will provide a more detailed report in the near future, with the official times and distances when these are available.
Please remember that we are holding the Club Cross Country Championship race this coming Wednesday 30 April. The race starts at 19:15 from Temple Fields, just off Green Lane. You can either meet up as usual at the Railway and jog up to the start or meet us on the field.
We had a very good turn-out at the Sheffield Half Marathon which was held today. The times were very quick too. The finishing positions and times of our runners were as follow: 92 Nigel Critchlow 1:23:14; 142 Steve Claye 1:25:13, 247 Dave Nutton 1:28:29, 658 Roland Meylan 1:36:33, 691 Mark Quince 1:37:06, 776 Daniel Feely 1:38:21, 896 Emma Wharton 1:39:52, and 1397 Stephen Vaccarini 1:45:17. The good form of our marathon runners continue, while Nigel Roland and the others show that they too are coming good, just as Spring arrives. Well done, everybody!
Paul Drabble made the journey up to the Lake District to compete in the Anniversary Waltz fell race. Paul finished in 82nd place with a time of 2:00:05. Paul reckoned that just about the hardest race he's ever done. Winner of the Men's race was wor Llyod Taggart who came home just over a minute ahead of second placed Simon Booth of Borrowdale Fell Runners. First lady home was Emma Clayton of Scunthorpe and District AC. Well done, Paul.
Joanne has pointed out that the race actually starts from Townhead, Edale Road in Hope and not as announced below. The grid reference, for reference, is GR SK168845.
There is a new fell race called Some You Win - Some You Loose (SYW-SYL) in the calendar. The race is run over 7.7 miles with 2700 ft of climbing and is organised by Dark Peak FR. The race starts at 10:00 from Townhead, Edale on Sunday 27 April and is open to Over 18s only. You can only enter on the day and the entry fee is £4. Colin is keen to raise our profile further and encourages all those interested in racing to get over to Edale for this new, exciting race.
Mick Hall, one of our close contacts at Staffordshire Moorlands, is organising a trip to Amsterdam in the Autumn. The previous trips have been very successful. Please go to Amsterdam 2008 for further details if you are interested.
The club fielded three runners in the 4-mile Senior race and one runner in the Junior race over 2 miles at the Wirksworth Incline race which was held on Sunday 19 April. Nick Stone was first Buxtonian back in 28:02, which earned him 21st place and 2nd in the MV50 category. Nick was followed closely by Up and coming Chris Rushworth who finished 23rd and was only six seconds behind. Still on the comeback trail, John Davies was 74th in 33:49. Natasha Lindley finished 11th overall in the Junior race and came second in the Girls race, behind a runner two years older. Well done, everybody. Two Charnwood runner also did very well. Rob Salt, an old training buddy of mine, finished 12th and Claire McKittrick, another of my old training buddies, won the Ladies race and finished 14th overall.

Rick Houghton's excellent form continues unabated as he finished 18th in the Kinder Downfall fell race; Rick's time was 1:17:11. Rick was followed by Darren Hawkins who came home in 51st place with 1:22:46. Colin Wilshaw finished 84th with 1:28:22. Don O'Brien finished in 94th place with 1:30:38. I am also happy to report that Pip Peakman is back racing after taking a break; Pip completed the course in 2:06:08 and saw her finish 207th. Lloyd Taggart lead a trio of Dark Peakers home, winning by over 2.5 minutes.
This is a new initiative in the West and East Midlands regions to promote sprinting amongst U20 and senior athletes. The events are 100 m, 200 m and 400 m. There are six qualifying rounds: 5 May at Birmingham Rowheath, 28 May at Coventry, 4 June at Corby, 18 June at Loughborough, 19 June at Worcester and finally 25 June at Derby. The top four athletes from each region and in each event will be invited to comete at the Finals which are to be held in conjunction with the Birmingham Games on 20 July. More details and information, including entry details, can be downloaded from either England Athletics or Midland Athletics.
I now have the results from the Edale Skyline results. Rick Houghton race a blinder of a race to finish 11th overall and second MV40; his time was 3:14:51. Mark Cudahy was second Buxtonian home in 25th place with 3:24:29. Colin Wilshaw keeps getting better and better as he finished 82nd with 3:49:02. Andrew Sims was our fourth runner as he came back to Edale in 207th place some 4:35:17 after he set off. Very good efforts all round!!!
Brothers Adam and Khem Sattaur competed in the second Shining Cliffs race on 23 March, where they acquitted themselves very well. Adam came fourth with a time of 23:28, only 18 seconds off third place, with younger brother Khem in 9th place with 28:15. Well done, Lads!

The Stoke City Parks GP is being held as usual this summer. The format is the same as last year, i.e. 2 km for U15, U13, U11, 3 km for U17, and 5 km Seniors and Veterans. Girls and boys and women and men compete in the same race. These are the dates: 13 May - Longton Park, 3 June - Tunstall Park, 8 July - Fenton Park and 19 August - Hanley Park. You need to complete all four races to be in the running for prizes. More details regarding transport will be posted nearer the date.
We are part of the East Midlands region of England Athletics. The East Midlands are trying to get the Championships going this year. Wemissed the Road Relay Championships, but there are more races coming up. Notably, 10 km Road Race Championships on 24 August at Moulton, Northants, the Half Marathon Championships are held in conjunction with the Newark race on 10 August and finally, the Marathon Championships are run as part of Leicester Marathon on 19 October.
I have extracted the times for our runners at each 5 km station as well as the half marathon post. The data is collated in document which can be found here, Flora London Marathon Splits, on pdf-format [34 kb]. It makes very interesting reading. I would like to draw your attention to Dave Nutton's finely paced run, where he didn't deviate from a 22 minute pace for most of the way. Emma Wharton and Caroline Taylor also ran a quite even-paced race. Once again, Well Done everbody!!!
The weather seemed a bit variable, with rain at times. This didn't seem to deter the runners, especially in the Men's race where three runners broke 2:06. Martin Lel of Kenya won in 2:05:15 with fellow Kenyan Sammy Wanjiru in second place some nine seconds behind and Abderrahim Goumri (a former winner in London) in third a further six seconds back. Dan Robinson was first Briton in 13th place and was rewarded with a new PB. In the Ladies race, Irina Mikitenko of Germany pulled away from Russia's Svetlana Zakharova and Gete Wami of Ethiopia. Mikitenko's time was 2:24:14, Zakharova was 16 seconds behind and Wami was 1:23 behind the winner. Liz Yelling ran a fine race to finish ninth with a new PB of 2:28:33 and probably secured her ticket on the plane to Beijing. Dave Nutton posted an excellent new PB over the marathon distance when he came home in 3:09:31. Emma Wharton continues to go from strength to strength as she yet again set a new PB. Her time of 3:20:32 is an improvement by four or five minutes, I think. Mark Quince has had his preparation limited by injury and illness, but he nevertheless ran a decent time of 3:45:58. Mark Fitzgerald covered the course in just under four hours, with 13 seconds to spare. Caroline Taylor just missed out on going under four hours in her first ever marathon when came home in 4:04:14. Well done to all our runners. Magnificient personal bests by Dave and Emma. I will return with a more thorough analysis of the race. My old chum, training partner and flatmate Frank Dudbridge ran an excellent 2:44:30.
My apologies to Sheila Bradley, whose name I missed out when I brought you the results of the Wilmslow Half Marathon race. Sheila finished 1192nd overall and 11th in her age group with a time of 1:48:32.
The Edale Skyline race was held on Sunday 30 March. We had four intrepid runners in the field, who all acquitted themselves very well indeed. The following details has been passed on to me by Joanne Cudahy. Rick Houghton ran an absolute stormer to finish in 11th place with 3:14:51. Rick was followed by Mark Cudahy in a very creditable 25th place in 3:24:51. Colin Wilshaw also ran an excellent race to record 3:49:01. Andrew Sims was our fourth finisher in 207th place with a time of 4:35:17. Lloyd Taggart was the winner of the race by a country mile; his time was in the region of 2:46. Well done to all who competed in the Edale Skyline and Wilmslow Half Marathon races.
Wirksworth Incline race is held on Sunday 20 April; there is a Junior and a Senior race. The Chelmorton Chase race is held on Sunday 7 September with a 11:30 start.
There was a very good turn-out from the club at the Wilmslow Half Marathon last Sunday. The times posted by our runners were excellent allround. Paul Drabble was first one back in 73rd place and brilliant time of 1:22:35. Nigel Critchlow had run with Paul for part of the way, but in the end had to concede to Paul. Nigel finished a fine 104th with 1:24:30. Dave Nutton showed that the injury scare of last week was a mere memory when he ran a controlled race and posted a 1:30:18 clocking, which was good for 251st spot. Mark Quince, Emma Wharton and Caroline Taylor also showed that their marathon preparations are going well as they finished in 1:38:36 (586th), 1:50:36 (1347) and 1:50:35 (1346), respectively. Roland Meylan is on the comeback trail after an injury and ran 1:40:01 (669th), while Shaun Taylor finished 1001st with 1:45:21. Mark Fitzgerald made a rare outing on the roads and finished 1490th with 1:52:42. Kath Forder ran a 2:02:28 which placed her in 2184th place. Both the Ladies and the Men's teams finished 16th in the team races. The Ladies race was won impressively by Michelle Ross, formerly running for Stoke AC, who came home 9th overall in 1:12:50. Michelle has really come good in the last couple of years.
Simon Moorhouse, one of our erstwhile Half Marathon organisers, was our sole representative in the Haworth Hobble, a mere 32-ish miles across the lovely Yorkshire moors. Simon completed the race in 8:42:39 and finished 241st.
Dave Nutton is taking part in the Flora London Marathon on Sunday 13 April. Dave is raising money for the British Heart Foundation. Please see his request for sponsorship support.
Dave writes: I am one of the many of our club runners heading down to London for the Marathon on April 13th. There will be no Friday Night session tonight (21 March) as I shall be eating hot cross buns and put my feet up. Normal service will resume at 18:30 next Friday.
Steve Claye returned to racing in Sheffield last Sunday. Steve's time was 39:15 which earned him 51st place. Steve was not too pleased about the time, especially since it was slower than last year, but it is very early days in the 2008 season yet. Just wait until the warmer weather arrives an Steve will be flying again. Annemarie, Steve's daughter came 191st out of 428 finishers with a time of 48:20. Well done to the Claye's!
Don O'Brien and Bill Allsop were the only two Buxtonians taking part in the popular Cloud Nine fell race organised by Congleton Harriers on Sunday 3 March. Don finished 72nd with 1:10:10 and Bill ccame 160th with 1:23:53. There was an almighty tussle between Simon Bailey (Mercia) and wor Lloyd Taggart (Dark Peak) and saw Simon winning by 1 minute and 55 seconds.
The Milton Keynes Half Marathon was held last Sunday (3 March). Dave Nutton travelled to the Town of Many Roundabouts and Concrete Cows. It turned out to be a very worthwhile trip as Dave finished 124th with a time of 1:18:03 (1:28:24), which is a PB. This confirms the good form Dave has shown at our speed sessions on Friday nights. Well done, Dave.
Wendy Higginbottom is the new contact for Buxton AC Juniors. Wendy can be contacted on 01298 - 23759.
Nigel Critchlow had a good run in the Cheadle 5-mile road race today. He was tantalisingly close to the 30 minute mark when he finished 20th with a time of 30:32. Emma Wharton ran close to her PB when she finished 11th Lady and 50th overall in 33:24. Nick Stone was overall in 32:27. My old training buddy Clare McCittrick finished 5th Lady and second in her age group.
I have begun updating the list of fell races on our Upcoming Races page. I will try to sort out the road races over the next few days.
Good Luck to all runners who are competing at the weekend. The races that spring to mind are the Cheadle 5-mile road race (Emma, Nigel, ...) and Milton Keynes Half Marathon (Dave).

The Women's Relay consists of six legs of roughly three miles. The Senior Men's relay consist of 12 stages, of either 3 miles (Legs 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, and 12) or 5.5 miles (Legs 1, 4, 7, and 10). Ladies who would like to take part should speak to Emma Wharton as soon as possible. Men wishing to take part in the Relays should let Stefan Ledin know.
Horwich is again the location for the Veteran's 5 km Road Race Championships. There are also an open 5 km race which incorporates the Northern 5 km Championships. Closing date for entries is 15 June 2008. It is a cracking race and very competitive. It is an excellent opportunity to set a really fast time. There are also exciting criteriums, i.e. bike racing.
This weekend saw the National Cross Country Championships take place at Alton Towers, Staffordshire. Runners from all over the UK travelled to take part in this prestigious event. Buxton AC was well represented with Matt Lomas in the Under 13 boys race finishing in 238th place, he was followed by Jack Clarke in 261st place and Bradley Fowler in 353 place. The Under 13 girl’s race saw Elle Twentyman and Natasha Lindley battle it out to finish in 145th and 147th place overall and were followed by Jade Hill in 238th. Chris Rushworth was 206th in the Under 15 boys and Zoe Bayley 162nd in the Under 17 Women's race. Emma Wharton was the sole competitor for Buxton AC in the senior women’s race finishing in 200th exactly. In the men’s race Dave Nutton continued his good form finishing in 721st, followed by Terry Fowler in 885th and Mark Quince in 995th. Kyle Fowler who now runs for Staffs Moorlands finished in 81st position overall in the under 17 boys race. Overall the Buxton AC runners gained valuable experience against very competitive fields. The report was written by Emma Wharton.
We had a very successful bag packing session at Morrisons in Buxton today. We raised in excess of £660. Well done to all junior athletes, parents and coaches who took part. A BIG Thank You to Terry Fowler for setting it up and to Emma Wharton for sorting out the bag packers. A BIG Thank You also to Morrisons, Buxton, who allowed us to raise much needed funds and to all Morrisons' customers who were so generous and supportive.

The East Midlands Relay Championships are held on Loughborough on Sunday 23 March 2008. I presume these are road relays, judging by the winning times. The U20 and Senior Ladies relay race consists of three legs over three miles and the U20, Senior and Veteran Men's race consists of four legs over three miles. Is there anyone interested in taking part, the please speak to Stefan Ledin as soon as possible.
Sanna Kallur of Sweden has really hit the form. Her times have hovered around the Swedish National record and yesterday she went one better by setting a new World Record. Impressive. The old record was held by Ludmila Engquist and was set in 1990.
The AGM will now be held on Thursday 21 February 2008 in the Function Room at the Railway. The meeting starts at 19:30. Please come along to the AGM and make your voice heard. The More, The Merrier!
Chris Mallendar at England Athletics has forwarded a news bulletin with information about the performances by athletes in the East Midlands. Please click News Bulletin January 2008 to read the bulletin.
Yes, it's that time of year when the subscription becomes due. The subscription has been inflation-proofed and remains a rather modest £15 for the year. Please pay your subscription to Sheila Bradley as soon as possible. Sheila will accept cash or a cheque, made payable to Buxton Athletic Club.
The Area Championships were held on Saturday last. The Northerns were held in Roundhay Park, Leeds. Elle Twentyman had a good run in the U13 Girls race when she finished 108th out of 223 finishers. Older sister, Jess Twentyman, and Ceciliy Walton competed in the U15 Girls race where they finished 126th and 159th, respectively. Emma Wharton and Debbie Drabble reprewented the club in the Senior Women's race. Both ladies ran very well and finished 120th and 235th in a field of 290 finishers. Matt Lomas ran an excellent race in the U13 Boys when he finished 76th, just ahead of Jamie (?) Clarke, who was 103rd, Liam Norten in 156th place and Bradley Fowler in 178th. This was the only team we closed on the afternoon and the lads finished 23rd in the team competition. Chris Rushworth was our sole representative in the U15 Boys race and ran a very good race to finish 83rd. In the Senior Men's race Paul Drabble and Mark Quince negotiated the killer hill three times. Paul was 311th and Mark 547th. Elsewhere, Kyle Fowler has an excellent run in the Midland Championships, which were held at Leamington. Kyle came 13th in the U17 Men's race.
My sincere apologies for not showing up for the Friday night speed session. I got distracted and left work too late. The plan for next week's session is 5 x Park Road, with liberal recovery of 2 min.
There were comfortable wins for Lloyd Taggart (43 s) and Jackie Lee (37 s); Jackie finished 12th overall! Colin Wilshaw was our only representative. Colin finished in 57th place with 34:49.
Terry Fowler and Dave Nutton travelled to Derby to take part in the Midweek races. Terry posted a 5:36 clocking for 7th place overall and second in the MV40 category in 1-mile race. Dave Nutton ran the 5 km race in 19:11 and finished 33th. Terry Fowler also ran the 5 km race and his time was 19:48 for 38th place.
Emma Wharton has sent me a report from the County Cross Country Championships, where the Buxton athletes provided the best ever showing. Please click Report from the County XC Champs 2008 (PDF, 65 kb) to read Emma's report.
It is with great sadness I have to report that Kajsa Bergqvist, the Swedish High Jumper, has called it a day on an outstanding career as a high jumper. Illness and injuries have finally taken their toll. Kajsa holds the indoor world record at 2.08 m and has a PB of 2.06 outdoors. She will be sadly missed by many, due to her elegance and excellent style.
Simon Moorhouse has just pointed out that the Lambs Longer Leg Race is by pre-entry only, so there is not much time to get the entry form in before the race. Please use a generic FRA form. Please also see Hayfield Fell Race website for further details.
Buxton athletes acquitted themselves very well in the County Championships at the Weekend. The individual bronze medal winners were Jenny Jackson in the U17 Women's race, Emma Wharton in the Senior Women's race and Wendy Higginbottom in the Veteran Ladies race. The club had further success in the team competitions: Our Senior Ladies team (Wendy, Emma, Sarah Nicholson and Debbie Drabble) won the Gold medals; our two teams in the U13 Girls race took Silver (Elle Twentyman, Natasha Lindley and Jade Hill)and Bronze (Hannah Fenton, Charlotte Colling and Lauren Greenhalgh)! Our U15 Boys team (Chris Rushworth, Jack Gregory, Adam Sattaur and Callum Booth) clinched a Silver medal. There were brilliant performances from all Buxton athletes. Elsewhere, Kyle Fowler finished fourth in the U17 Men's race at the Staffordshire Championships. Well done, everybody!!! It shows that the hard work during the autumn has paid off. Llouyd Taggart and Jackie Lee went to Isle of Man over New Year and took the opportunity to blow away the opposition in the St John Fell race. Both Lloyd and Jackie set new course records. Well done to the Dynamic Duo.
Mark Fitz and I were the only ones turning up for the speed session this evening. The weather was thoroughly unpleasant with lashing rain and strong winds. Those who didn't come out to play probably did the right thing to stay indoors, keeping warm and cosy. However Mark and I feel that we have been toughened up by our hardship and confidently expect to reap the benefits when we race next!
I would like to wish Good Luck to all those taking part in the County Cross Country Championships tomorrow. A number of athletes should be in with a shout for a medal and/or selection to compete for Derbyshire in the Inter-Counties Championships in March.
