Website Updates - 23/12/07

I have moved the news from October and November to our News 2007 page.

Fancy Dress Run - 23/12/07

The Fancy Dress run took place on Wednesday 19 December. The turn-out was excellent and it was clear that a lot of thought had gone into the dressing up. The winners of the Best Dress competition were Caroline Taylor and Mark Fitzgerald.

Rick Houghton Finishes the Year in Style - 23/12/07

Rick Houghton finished a very creditable 8th (55:53) in the Christmas Cracker race, which was held over the Roaches on Sunday 16 December. John Davies finished in 134th place with 1:27:49. Emma Wharton and Sarah Nicholson finished together in 174th and 175th place (1:34:43). Jayne Denby finished one place ahead of Ian Hulse, in 265th (1:37:36) and 266th place (1:38:06) respectively. There were 322 finishers. The themes for the Buxton runners' dresses were Toga party (Rick), himself (John), Greek Godesses (Emma and Sarah), Crusader (Jayne) and Monk (Ian). Please visit either the websites of Bryan Dale or Mick Hall for photographs.

Sheila Bradley Clinches Top Spot in Stockport 10-Mile Race - 23/12/07

Sheila Bradley bagged top spot in her age category in the 10-mile road race promoted by Stockport Harriers. Nigel Critchlow was first Buxton runner home in 31st place, with a very good time of 1:03:00. Dave Nutton followed Nigel in 89th place in 1:08:22. In her first 10-mile race, Debbie Drabble finished 381st in 1:23:17. Sheila Bradley snuck under the radar as she was listed as an unattached runner, though she was definitely wearing her Buxton vest. Sheila was 259th in 1:17:02. A staggering 624 runners fininshed the race. Well done, Sheila, Nigel, Dave and Debbie.

Friday Night Speed Session - 14/12/07

You will be glad to know that next Friday's speed session is definitely on. There were five (well, six actually) brave souls who turned for the session tonight in freezing fog. They worked hard on the Devonshire circuit. Stay with it, it works and it's worth it!

Buxton AC's Christmas Do [15/12/07] - 11/12/07

Please do not forget the Christmas Do of the year. I am of course referring to the Club's bash in the Function Room in the Railway on Saturday 15 December 2007. The Do kicks off at 19:30, but the warm up starts at 19:00! Good food is followed by dancing!

Annual General Meeting - 11/12/07

The new date for the postponed Annual General Meeting has not been decided yet, but is likely to be in the second half of January 2008. Further details and date will be posted here in the near future.

European Cross Country Championships - 11/12/07

Two classy Swedes runners finished second, Mustafa Mohamed, and fourth, Eric Sjqvist, to Cross Counrty specialist Sergey Lebid. This is an exeptional showing by the Swedes. Well, it was not quite so surprising to me that Mustafa finished so high up. He's in the form of his life, having set a new Swedish National Record over 3000 m Steeplechase this summer. Eric's placing was perhaps a bit more surprising, but very welcome. A good showing by Andy Baddeley in 11th and by Kate Reed (6th), Hayley Yelling (9th) and Liz Yelling (10th) in the Ladies race.

It is with great pleasure I announce that Joanne has given birth to a bouncing baby girl. This is Joanne and Mark's first child. The name of the girl and her length and weight at birth are as yet unknown to me, but I will keep you up to date.

Report from the Roaches - 14/11/07

Colin Wilshaw sends the following report from the Roaches race. Sunday 11th November saw a number of Buxton based runners head over to Meerbrook for the Roaches 15 mile fell race. The start from the village hall is simple enough but a after a short track you reach a s**t-filled farm yard which all runners pass through (up to a foot deep); still its all part of the fun. Then it is 2 miles of running through muddy fields all with a steady climb to the Roaches. Once you successfully climbed the "sloath" its a make you way to Roach end.. Then a gentle JOG through Gradbach woods until you come across the widest part of the river and through you go. The it is another steady climb to Shutlingloe and up the top to the trig point. Then begin the race proper, although having done 7 1/2 miles the unofficial start is upon you, and its on the return that you have to draw on all those hidden strengths or in my case jelly babies. The race is also strange in that when you are running to Shutlingloe you have prepared to face the leaders as they return all looking fresh and peeky..the race also get very interesting at the return river crossing as on the first cross the runners are all bunched together, but not the second time around and it can be necky even for a 6`4" runner when the water is running above you knees. Then you climb all the way back to the roaches passing the sunday morning walkers and attempt to put on a brave smile as if you are enjoying this and it no effort (you all know what i mean). Then the S**T again just when you least needed it and only a mile to go to the finish.

Just under 240 runner took part, the race was won by local Lloyd Taggart in under 2 hours, Rick Houghton was first Buxton runner home in 14th (2.19) then Nig Critchlow 42nd (2.31) , Tracy Greenway (59th) 2.37 and also third lady. Col Wilshaw and Don O`brien 75th and 76th in 2.43. Simon Moorhouse had a good run knocking just over ten minutes off last years time finishing in 3.40. Also running was Matt (Help, I'm locked in the toilet!)Thompson but sadly had to retire at 10 miles due to wetherstone fever but he has recovered.

For those out there get this one put in you diary for next year as it an excellent race and local and all abilities take part. Full results can be found on Macclesfield Harriers and some excellent photos on Mike Hall photo. (A good one of Lloyd having a bath)

Report from the Six Dales - 14/11/07

Joanne Cudahy sent a brief report from the Six Dales race, which is a LDWA organised 26 mile run/walk through the beautiful Peak District. Mike and Ged Cudahy ran together and came home in joint first place in a time of about 3:40. Joanne also enclosed photos which I will upload over the next day or so.

Fletcher Cup Reminder - 13/11/07

The Fletcher Cup will be held this coming Sunday, 18 November. The organiser this year is Colin Wilshaw. Please let Colin know if you are planning to take part and also give him your estimated time. The objective is, as always, to finish as close to 12:00 (midday) as possible. The run route goes into Goyt Valley and the distance is approximately 9.2-ish miles. I will give you an example: say you expect to cover the distance in 75 minutes, you will then set off at 10:45.

Christmas Do 2007 - 19/10/07

You should all have received the menu. Please give either Emma Wharton or Sheila Bradley your money (or cheque made payable to Buxton AC) and also remember to make your choice of starter, main course and dessert.

Brief Results of Langdale Horseshoe - 16/10/07

Rich Houghton, Tracey and Brent Greenaway, and Colin Wilshaw competed in the Langdale Horseshoe fell race on Saturday. It is a lovely race, but quite tough as one has to cover 14 miles in the wonderful and hilly setting that is Langdale. The weather can also play a very important role. Alas, I have no weather information. Rick's excellent form continues as he finished 39th in 2:43:47. Tracey Greenaway was next Buxtonian to finish in 93rd place with a time of 3:03:42, Colin Wilshaw finished 135th with 3:14:03 and Brent Greenaway was 185th with 3:36:57. Jackie Lee of Lee and Taggart fame won the Ladies race with a comfortable margin of about 14 minutes. Excellent performances all round! I hope to have an account of the race from Col in the near future.

Reminder of Windgather Fell Race [21/10/07] - 16/10/07

The Windgather Fell Race is held on Sunday 21 October 2007. This is run over a lovely course in and around Goyt Valley. The race starts at Burbage Institute at 11:00. Please contact Mark if you can help out.

Indoor Meetings at English Institute of Sport in Sheffield - 16/10/07

Northern Athletics are organising two indoor meetings at English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. These are usually well worth attending and the EIS facilities are truly amazing. There is something for everyone! If you have never competed indoors, then please have a go. It is good fun.

Resurrection of the Friday Night Session - 12/10/07

I think I now have sufficient interest from our members to try to resurrect the Friday night speed session. It will involve a variety of repetitions, aerobic and slightly anaerobic. Some running will be on the flat and I will also include hills reps. Variety is the spice of life! The first session will be held on Friday 19 October. We will meet by the bollards at the Old Hall end of Broad Walk at 18:30 and the session will last around an hour.

Christmas Do [15/12/07] - 12/10/07

This year's Christmas Do will be held in the Function Room at the Railway from 19:30 onwards on Saturday 15 December. The club will subsidise the cost of the meal and provide something to drink. The cost to you, dear member, will a mere £10 per person. Can't say fairer than that! You should have received or will soon receive an invitation along with a menu from which to make your selection. Please make your menu choice and pay your money to Emma Wharton as soon as possible. There will also be a disco for those who would like to dance the night away.

Fletcher Cup [18/11/07] - 12/10/07

The ever-popular Fletcher Cup will be held on Sunday 18 November. Colin Wilshaw has kindly offered to organise the event this year. The Fletcher Cup involves running from the carpark by Buxton Pool into Goyt Valley and back to the Pool. The distance is about 9.1 miles. You will guestimate how long time it will take you to cover the course. Example: You reckon it will take you 70 minutes to run the route. You will then set off 10:50. The aim is to finish as close as possible to 12:00. The winner is the one who is closest to her or his prediction. If we get our guesses right, we could all finish at the same time. Colin will let us know whether we will run the route in the clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. The prize giving will take place in the Old Clubhouse shortly after we have finished.

Second North Staffs Cross Country Race [13/10/07] - 11/10/07

Second North Staffs Cross Country Race is held at Parkhall on Saturday 13 October. We are meeting at the Community School at 11:00 for a departure shortly thereafter. The course is suitable for spikes or trail shoes.

Amazing Turn-Out in the Dream On Mile - 11/10/07

It was a perfect evening for a one-mile race, no wind to speak off and very mild temperature. We had a staggering 38 finishers in the Dream On mile. There were 31 runners in the Senior race and seven youngsters competing in the Junior race. Steve Watson won the Senior race in a time of 5:00. He was followed by a fast finishing trio comprising of Rick Houghton, Nigel Critchlow and Terry Fowler. Thomas Drabble and Lyndon Caven also competed well. I would like to thank Jim Bradley for organising the race and Sheila Bradley, Kath Forder and Wendy Higginbottom for helping out with the time keeping, typing up the results and handing out the numbers. Thank you must also go to all runners who took part. Please click here for the Dream On Mile results.

Dream On Mile [071010] - 07/10/07

The Dream On Mile is held on Wednesday 10 October and is organised by Jim Bradley. This is a Club Championship race, so all contenders take note. Please meet in the Railway as usual for 19:00. The jog to the start in Broad Walk can then serve as a warm up. The race will start at 19:15.

Excellent Performances at the North Staffs Cross Country League - 07/10/07

I have only a few details from what turned out to be an excellent day out for our runners. We had a team in the U11 Girls race, with Ceciley Wyatt in 16th place, closely followed by Sophie Quince in 17th, and Eleanor Foulkes in 23rd. Ellena Twentyman and Jade Hill competed in the U13 Girls race where they finished eighth and eleventh, respectively. Amy Mellor won the U15 Girls race, showing that her excellent form continues. Jesse Twentyman finished in fourth, which is her best finishing position the league to date, I think. George Smedley-Castle, in his first ever race, ran an absolute stormer to finish second in the U11 Boys race, with Thomas Drabble in 12th place. In the U13 Boys race, Matthew Lomas came 15th and Bradley Fowler 26th. In the U15 Boys race, Chris Rushworth finsh in the 10th place and Adam Sattaur was 18th. In Senior Women's race, Emma Wharton showed very good strength and finished in 16th place; Caroline Taylor finished in 48th place, Debbie Drabble was 72nd and Debbie Rushworth 92nd. The Buxton Ladies team is in third place in the Second Division. Mark Quince was our only finisher in 96th place in the Senior Men's race after Terry Fowler aggravated a back injury. The next race will be held at Parkhall on Saturday 13 October.

Emma Wharton Excels in the High Peak 40-mile Challenge - 07/10/07

Emma Wharton had an amazing run in the High Peak 40-Mile Challenge, which runs from Buxton to Buxton via Goyt Valley, Chinley, Rushup Edge, Castleton, Tideswell Dale, and Chelmorton. Emma was second lady and 17th overall in 7:07:22. First Buxton runner back was Mark Cudahy who finished 11th in 6:51:21. Colin Wilshaw had agood run too, finishing 33rd in 7:32:07. Sheila Bradley was next Buxton runner home in 7:55:04. Mark Fitzgerald was 62nd with a time of 8:35:56. He was cxlosely followed by Simon Moorhouse in 63rd place, some 7 minutes and 49 seconds later. Emma Wharton won the Senior Ladies race and Sheila Bradley won the Women Super Vets race, finishihng ahead of Fell Running legend Wendy Dodds. Well done to all those who competed so well. RESPECT.

Mark Fitzgerald Qualifies for the Montrail Ultra Running Series - 07/10/07

Mark Fitzgerald has qualified for the Montrail Ultra Running Series after fine performances in the Bullock Smithy, a 56-mile jaunt, where he finished 29th with 13:10, while running with brother Al. Mark also competed in the High Peak 40-mile race, which he completed in the a time of just over eight and a half hours.

Early Warning of the Dream On Mile [071010] - 02/10/07

Jim Bradley is organising the next Club Championship race on Wednesday 10 October. This is the highly popular Dream On mile, which loops around the Pavilion Gardens. The course record, in recent times, is held by Steve Watson, who broke five minutes. Meet as usual at the Railway for 19:00 or meet us on Broad Walk for a 19:15 start.

Fast Running in the Great North Run and in Berlin - 02/10/07

Haile Gebreselasie sprinted round the Berlin marathon course at the weekend. Haile's pedigree on the track and in shorter races have never been in any doubt, but he had really fulfilled his potential over the arathon distance. Until Sunday just gone that is. Gebreselasie took 29 seconds off Paul Tergat's world best time, and the new best time is 2:04:26. That equates to 4:45 miling, pretty swift I think you would agree. Meanwhile, up on Tyneside, a relatively unknown runner, Kara Goucher, burned off wor Paula Radcliffe with a couple of swift miles in the middle part of the race. This was Kara's first attempt at the half marathon and what a debut she made, setting a new American best, 1:06:57, for the distance and also record the eighth fastest time of all time. Paula was some 50-odd seconds behind with 1:07:53. It was claimed to be a failure, but that was probably Paula's third or fourth fastest time ever. Two Kenyans sluggesd it out in the Men's race, with Martin Lel's sprinting down the last furlong clinching the win from Wanjiru, both runners recording respectable times, 1:00:10 and 1:00:18 , respectively.

September 2007

The Future is Bright, Buxton Youngsters Posting Excellent Performances - 25/09/07

It is with great pleasure I can tell you that two of our young athletes have done very well indeed. Amy Mellor won the Ladies category in the Chelmorton Chase fell race, just ahead of clubmate Annemarie Claye. Chris Rushworth won the Gawsworth 5 km road race a couple of weeks ago; Chris was in third place for quite a while, but found an extra gear to clinch victory.

High Peak Marathon Competitors Sought - 25/09/07

Simon Hunter is looking to field a team in the gruelling, but very enjoyable, High Peak Marathon, a mere 40 mile stint around Dark Peak. The team consists of four runners, who have to carry food, tent, emergency rations, etc. However, Simon is looking to have groupo of six runners from which to select a team. The race starts and finishes in Edale. The race is usually held on the first weekend of March. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Simon directly or talk to me so I can pass on the details to Simon.

Offroad Runs on Wednesday Nights - 24/09/07

Sadly, the nights are drawing in and we are forced to run on the pavements. However, Col is organising a set of offroad runs, starting on Wednesday 3 October. The plan is to hold an offroad run every other week, unless there is demand for an offroad every week! Please bring water proofs and a torch. The planned runs are: 03/10 Combs half way across, 17/10 Axe Edge Moor, 31/10 Goyt Valley, 14/11 King Sterndale, 28/11 Long Hill, 12/12 Anthony Hill.

Reminder of Club Committee Meeting [070926] - 24/09/07

I would like to remind all committee mebers that the next Club Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday 26 September in the Function Room in the Railway. We will discuss and set a date for the Annual General Meeting among other topics. We will aim to start the meeting at 20:15, by which time I hope that all training groups have made it back to the pub. All members are welcome to attend.

Brief Thoughts on the Golden League Meeting in Berlin - 24/09/07

Susanna Kallur of Sweden set a new PB in the 100 m Hurdles (12.49 s) and had the pleasure of finishing ahead of Michelle Perry, here nemesis in Osaka a few week's back. Christine Ohuruogu and Nicola Sanders came second and third in the 400 m, a race which was one by Sanya Richards who didn't qualify of the World championships. There were also good wins for Yelena Isinbayeva and Blanka Vlaºic in pole vault and high jump. Yelena Isinbayeva and Sanya Richards then got to share the pot of gold bars that are awarded to those athletes that go undefeated throughout the Golden League series.

Asafa Powell in Excellent Form - 09/09/07

Jamaica's Asafa Powell is the sole 100 m World Record holder once more after a blistering 9.74 s at the meeting in Rieti tonight. This should go some way to make up for his disappoinment at the World Championships. Meanwhile, the Swedes and Finns have competed in the annual two-day Finnkampen in Gothenburg. The Swedish women won for the seventh year running, after being a few points behind after the first day. The Swedish men gave spirited performances on the second day, but could not haul back the Finns, who went on to win by four points.

Results of Great Yorkshire Run in Sheffield - 09/09/07

These are the results of the first Great Yorkshire Run, which was held in Sheffield today. Terry Fowler set a PB with 41:09 and finished 132nd. Mark Quince was the next Buxtonian to finish, in 190th place; Mark's time was 42:46. Emma Wharton finished 390th with a time of 45:13. There might have been other runners from Buxton, but these were the ones I could easily find. There were 3030 finishers! Bradley Fowler had an excellent run in the Junior Great Yorkshire Run when he finished 27th with 12:01. Sophie Quince also had a very good run; Sophie finished 53rd in 13:33. There were 103 finishers in the 9-11 year old race (Wave 1).

North Staffordshire Cross Country League Changes - 09/09/07

Please note the following amendments to the NSCCL fixtures: RAce 1 on Saturday 9 October will be held at Lyme Valley and Race 3 at Stafford Common will now be held on Saturday 10 November and not as previously advertised.

Paul Drabble in Good Form in Chesterfield - 08/09/07

Paul Drabble was our sole representative in the Chesterfield Spire 10-mile road race last weekend. Paul won his age category (MV45) and came 19th overall with a time of 1:05:26. You will appreciate the severity of the course, which starts with a long climb up the ridge and into Peak District, when you consider that the winning time was 55:49. Well Done, Paul!

Results of the Club 5-Mile Road Race - 07/09/07

Sheila Bradley reports that we had a very close finish in the club 5-mile road race on Wednesday just gone. Steve Watson was being caught by Rick Houghton, who did not quite make up Steve's advantage, Sheila Bradley reports. We had a good turn-out with 16 runners completing the course. In fact, Jim tells me that the last runner in porbably posted the fastest Lantern Rouge time for quite a few years. Well done toi all those who took part. A big Thank You to Jim and Sheila Bradley for organising the event. Please click on the link Carnival 5-Mile results for the full results. Sincere apologies to Steve who finished sixth. I do not know your surname. Please let me know and I will update the results.

Club 5-Mile Road Race [05/09/07] - 31/08/07

Jim Bradley is organising the Club 5-Mile Road Race on Wednesday 5 September. This is a Club Championhip counter. Meet as usual at the Railway. The start is at 19:15 by the Opera House. Please come along. The more, the merrier!

Ohuruogu and Sanders on Top of the World - 31/08/07

Christine Ohuruogu and Nicola Sanders put the rest of the World's 400 m runner in their place when the lassies finished first and second. The pair set new PBs into the bargain, 49.61 s and 49.65 s. Inevitably, there have been a great of discussion about the 12 month ban imposed on Christine Ohuruogu after she missed three out-of-competition drugs tests.

North Staffordshire Cross Country League Dates - 27/08/07

The Cross Country season is only a matter of weeks away. These are the dates and venues for the four races. 6th October: Wye Road (to be confirmed), 13th October: Park Hall, 24th November: Stafford Common and, my personal favourite, 8th December: Westwood High School. More details to follow.

The Cross Country season is only a matter of weeks away. These are the dates and venues for the four races. Senior athletes who would like to compete in the NSCCL, please can you let me or Sheila Bradley have your birthdate. The data will be provided to the League Organiser wto aid him in working out the standings in the Vets and Senior age groups. We intend to enter both female and male teams. Cross Country is good fun and it is an excellent building block for next season, irrespective of whether your ambitions are on the roads, the track or the fells.

Longnor Races [06/09/07] - 27/08/07

Longnor Races has a long tradition, where man/woman, horse and motorcycle meet, though not in the same race I hasten to add. This year's event is held on Thursday 6th September. It has not been confirmed, but I would hazard a guess that Andy Wilton will be there to defend his truly amazing record in the Longnor event. It's extra special for Andy as he is a local lad, born and brought up in Longnor. The start time for the running races is dependent on the horses and motorbikes, but is usually somewhere between 6 pm and 7 pm.

Andy Wiltons Strikes Gold in BMAF Half Marathon Championships - 27/08/07

Andy Wilton has had a quiet summer by his own standards, but he again confirmed his superb form by taking Gold in the MV45 category in the BMAF Half Marathon Championships, which was run within Leek Half Marathon yesterday. Andy's time was 1:15:37 and he finished 6th overall. Well Done, Andy! Buxton AC was represented by Dave Nutton who finished 122nd with 1:36:03, Johnathan Sewell in 141st place with 1:38:06, Steve Kenworthy, who recorded a time of 1:46:30 which earned him a 210th place. Our fourth scorer was Simon Moorhouse in 295th place with 1:53:53. Staffs Moorlands also landed the team title and Buxton AC were 11th.

World Championships Musings - 27/08/07

I am obviously delighted with Carolina Klüft's incredible performance in the Heptathlon, where she set a new PB and exceeded 7000 points for the second time in her life. I think 7032 points might be the second highest score by another athlete other than Jackie Joyner-Kersee, though Caro's total is well behind JJK's amazing 7291. It was also pleasing to see both Kelly Sotherton and Jessica Ennis perform so well, finishing third and fourth respectively. I feel so sorry for brave Jo Pavey, who outlasted all but two African (okay so Abelegesse competes for Turkey nowadays), yet had to concede third place in a well-judged race in sultry conditions. It reminds me so much of the agonies of Paula Radcliffe. Kenenisa Bekele proved yet again that he is a phenomenal runner by taking his third world title over 10000 m with a fine display of sprinting. Phillips Idowu finished sixth in an excellent Triple Jump final, which was won by Nelson Evora of Portugal with a 17.74 m hop, skip and jump. Meanwhile, susanna Kallur recorded the fastest time in the first round of the qualifyng heats of the 100 m Hurdles. There might be a medal in the offing for the European Champion. I certainly hope so. Andy Baddeley is through to the final of the 1500 m after finishing fourth in the first semifinal.

Fine Performances in Switzerland - 27/08/07

Mark Cudahy and Nick Stone competed in the International Matterhorn Mountain Race. The runners compete over 12.49 km and their is the small business of climbing 975 m - that's 7.75 miles and 3200 feet. Joanne Cudahy reports that Mark finished 7th in the MV40 category. I have no further details, but will provide a more comprehensive report soon. I have found the times on t'internet: Mark Cudahy recorded a ime of 1:15:49 and he was indeed 7th in his age group. Nick Stone fininshed 14th in his age group and his time was 1:24:04. Well done, lads.

Photographs from the Summer Series - 19/08/07

Please visit our Photo Gallery for a couple of photographs of Buxton Junior athletes receiving their trophies. The results have not appeared on the Summer Series website yet.

Edale Canter [31/08/07] - 17/08/07

Col Wilshaw is organising a special run from Edale to Crowden Towers, across Ringing Roger and back to Edale. It's approx. 6 miles with a LITTLE bit of climbing. Please meet at the Railway in Buxton at 18:30 or in Edale carpark at 19:00. Do not forget to bring water proofs.

Giant Panda Correction of Date - 17/08/07

Emma Wharton has informed me that I have got the date for the restaurant trip (the Giant Panda on the Market in Buxton) wrong. The High Peak 40-mile race and the trip to the Giant Panda will take place on Saturday 15 September at 19:30. Please speak to Emma if you would like to come along.

U11 Weekly Awards - 17/08/07

George and Lily Smedley-Castle won this week's medals and Natasha Taylor won the Endeavour Award and gets to keep the trophy for a week. Well done Natasha, Lilly and George

Buxton Athletes Excel in Hanley Park - 15/08/07

There were some excellent performances by Buxton-based athletes at Hanley Park last night. This was the last race in the Stoke City Parks GP series. Kyle Fowler won the U15B race over 2000 m in convincing style; he also won the overall competition. Zoe Bayley came second in the U15G competition and Bradley Fowler came third in the U11B competition. Terry Fowler was in third place in the MV40 class before the race and I reckon he remained in third. Also running was Andy Wilton who used the race as a sharpener for the BMAF Half Marathon Championships which is held in conjunction with Leek Half Marathon in just over a week's time.

Excellent News for Athletics in the Buxton Area - 15/08/07

I am very excited to be able to bring you the good news that we will soon have a Community Sports Coach working for the sport of Athletics in the High Peak, but mainly focussed on the Buxton area. The appointment of the coach has been possible through the Sterling work of Andrea Stone of Derbyshire Sport and Chris Mallendar of England Athletics. The appointment is for two years and the coach will spend 10 hours a week developing Athletics. The interviews were held on Wednesday of this week and we should know the name of the Coach in the near future. I will bring you further details of how it will all work in due course.

Website Update - 14/08/07

The news and views from July 2007 has been transferred to our News from 2007 page.

Post-Race Carbo-Replacement [16/09/07] - 13/08/07

Please let Emma know as soon as possible if you want to come along, so that Emma can book a table. You don't have to run 40 miles to come along! Emma's aiming to book at table for 19:30.

Countdown to the World Championships in Osaka - 13/08/07

It is now only 11 days until the World Championships Opening Ceremony. Can't wait!!

Brief Thoughts on the DN-Galan in Stockholm - 09/08/07

There were some impressive performances by the prospective gold medal candidates in DN-Galan the other night. The performances that really caught my eye were: Blanka Vlašic's clearance of 2.07 m, setting a new Croatian record in the process; Jeremy Warriner's 43.50 in the 400 m (the second fastest time ever over the distance behind Michael Johnson; Carolina Klüft's win in the Long Jump, Susanna Kallur's excellent win over Michelle Perry in the 100 m Hurdles, Stefan Holm's form in the High Jump (2.35 to equal the World leading jump); Kenenisa Bekele's 7:25.79 (new PB and World Lead) in the 3000 m; Paul Koech's 7:59.42 in the 3000 m Steeplechase and Musse Mohamed who yet again ran a fantastic race to go under Anders Gärderud's old national record. Paul Koech has not been selected by the Kenyan Federatino so will not be competing in Osaka. I would love to see Musse get in amongst the medals. Musse Mohamed has followed the same route as wor Mo Farah in that they both live and train with the best Kenyans - adopting the same training regime and mental attitude; this is clearly bearing fruit!

Brief Results of Borrowdale Fell Race - 09/08/07

This is one of the toughest of all fell races and is run over hallowed ground in the Lake District. Rick Houghton and Col Wilshaw had put in some seriously long runs around our own neck of the wood in order to prepare themselves for one of Lakeland Classics. Rick finished 127th with a time of 3:18:34, which is an excellent time and placing. Col was not far behind in 189th place with a time of 3:33:02; this is an equally excellent performance. There were 410 finishers so our lads did very well indeed. Hats off to Rick and Col - Well done!

Attitudes to Drug Users (Alleged and Confirmed) - 09/08/07

It is with heavy heart I have to report that yet another Astana rider (we are of course talking Tour de France cyclists here) has returned a positive urine sample (blood doping). The Astana team has since sacked the rider. Meanwhile the winner of this year's Tour de France, Dsciovery Channel's young Spanish rider Alberto Contador has been refused entry to the Vattenfall Cyclassics ProTour race in Hamburg; Mr Contador's name cropped up during the Operation Puerto investigation, which centred on blood doping. I read this on the same day as the followers of Baseball are celebrating (?) Barry Bonds hitting his 756th career home run and thus leads the all-time home run statistics. Bonds has been associated with Balco and Conti (same outfit that supplied "supplements" to Tim Montgomery, the American sprinter) and it is not entirely clear to be me whether Bonds have been found to have definitely used one of Balco's products. According to one set of reports I read, Baseball pundits and other former Baseball greats were uneasy in celebrating the achievements of Barry Bonds, while there is still some doubts over the nature of the association with Conti. While one newspaper reported that while Bonds might or might not have used performance enhancing drugs, but we should nevertheless celebrate an amazing feat. Newspaper stories have also highlighted that perhaps drug taking has not been perceived to be a major concern or indeed have been taken seriously in at least two of American professional sports (i.e. Baseball and American Football). This business of drug taking is just getting messier and messier. Athletics and Cycling are treating drug taking as a serious issue, but are the Federations doing enough? What else can be done? Should the punishment of confirmed drug cheats be more severe? These are also questions that are very difficult to answer. Whatever system is put in place there are people who will attempt to gain an unfair advantage.

July 2007

Wednesday Route - 31/07/07

Tomorrow night, the club run will take in Combs Moss, which will be circumnavigated. This is a special request from Jim who celebrates his birthday (65th!!) on this very day. The weather has finally turned summery and a good night is in store. See you all tomorrow.

Blanka Vlašic on Top Form - 31/07/07

Miss Vlašic has set her stall out ahead of the World Championships in Osaka. In Thessaloniki, Vlašic cleared 2.06 m and leads the World ranking quite comfortably. She must be the clear favourite in Women's High Jump.

Results of the Shining Tor Fell Race - 29/07/07

Mark Fitzgerald would like to say a big Thank You to the helpers and marshalls at the Shining Tor fell race held last Wednesday. Please click here for the full Shining Tor fell race results.

Alan Webb on Song - 29/07/07

American Alan Webb, fresh from setting a new national record over the mile ran a very fast 800 m in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium. Webb's time was 1:43.84, which is a mere 0.1 seconds off the World Leading time. Meanwhile, in Zaragoza Spain, Kenenisa Bekele ran 12:49.53 over 5000 m. Evergreen Maria Mutola of Mozambique ran 1:58.21 over 800 m at the Zaragoza meeting. Mutola looks a like Gold medal contender in the upcoming World Championships. Bekele looks really sharp, as if there was ever any doubt having watched him set a new UK Allcomers Record over 3000 m at the recent Sheffield meeting.

Mustafa Mohamed Goes Third on the World Ranking - 28/07/07

Mustafa Mohamed has finally broken one of the longest standing Swedish records, that of Anders Gärderud in the 3000 m Steeplechase. Anders Gärderud set the World Record, 8:08.02, when he won the dramatic Olympic Final, just hold off Bronislaw Malinowski and Frank Baumgartl; the latter falling when attempting to clear the final barrier. It was fitting the Mustafa, or Musse as he is called, set the new record on the very same day 31 years later. Musse's time of 8:05.75 lifts him up to third in the World Ranking in the event. Musse could well be a contender for a medal in Osaka, now that Saif Saaeed Shaheen is not competing.

Kajsa Bergqvist Clears 2 m in Monaco - 28/07/07

Blanka Vlašic of Croatia is very much the in-form female high jumper in the World at the moment. Vlašic cleared 2.03 m in Monaco and had some good attempts at 2.06 m too. Kajsa Bergqvist may have been second, but with 2 m clearance also showed that she's beginning to find the form that has eluded her so far this year.

Drugs and yet more drugs - 28/07/07

Alexandre Vinokourov, Christian Moreni and Michael Rasmussen have all been turfed out of this year's Tour de France. However, cycling is not the only sport with problems with athletes using performance enhancing drugs. Jolanda Ceplak of Slovenia has apparently also failed a drugs test; she may have been using EPO. Two Bulgarian athletes, Venelina Veneva and Vanya Stambolova, have also been banned by the IAAF for failing drugs tests.

Brief Report from Pride Park Relays - 24/07/07

We fielded a men's team in the Pride Park Relays on Monday night. It was a mixture of yoof and experience, where the former was represented by Matt Thompson and the latter were made up of Geoff Whitehead, Dave Nutton and Mark Quince. The lads did really well and finished eighth in the Senior race and 10th overall. Alas, we did not have a ladies team this year, but we will be back. The times over the two-mile course were good, quicker than last year I think. Matt Thompson: 10.43, Geoff Whitehead: 11.40, Mark Quince: 12:20, and Dave Nutton 11:49. For the full results, please go to Pride Park Relays results 2007.

(Very) Brief Report from Bamford Fell Race - 24/07/07

Mark Quince and Annemarie Claye took part in the Bamford fell race last Wednesday. Mark finished around 100th place, but I have no information of how Annemarie got on.

Calling All Prospective Barrel Carriers - 21/07/07

Mark Fitzgerald are looking to see if we can get two teams together for the annual Beer barrel race from the Snake Pass Inn to the Nag's Head in Edale. Teams of eight runners carry a beer barrel across the Kinder Plateau. It's about five miles and the climb up Seal Edge is quite hard, Mark informs me. Please speak to Mark as soon as possible if you are interested in taking part. I can't find the details but I think the race is held on 8th September.

Vlašic Sets New World Best - 21/07/07

Croatian high jumper Blanka Vlašic set a new World best mark of 2007 when she clear 2.05 m at a gala in Madrid tonight. Vlašic also had two good attempts at the World Record height of 2.10 m. Swede Kajsa Bergqvist and Ruth Beitia of Spain finished joint second with 1.95 m. Meanwhile, Alan Webb of the USA set a new National record with 3:46.91, thus breaking Steve Scott's 25-year old record!

Reminder of Shining Tor Fell Race [25/07/07] - 18/07/07

The second race in the Goyt Valley series is the Shining Tor fell race. The race is held on Wednesday 25 July 2007 and starts at 19.30 near the bottom end of the Errwood Reservoir. The registration takes place in the Errwood Sailing Club clubhouse. The race distance is 5.9 miles with 1600 feet of climbing and is rated AS. The course has changed for this year. Please visit Goyt Valley Series website for a route map. Mark Fitzgerald (01298-70092) would love to hear from any club member or supporter who is willing to help out at the race, either as a helper or marshall.

Problems with the Carnival 5-mile results - 15/07/07

I apologise as there seems to have been a problem with the link to the results of the Carnival race on Saturday. This has now been rectified.

Salim Sdiri Back in Hospital - 15/07/07

French long jumper Salim Sdiri who got speared by a javelin at the Grand Prix in Lausanne on Friday night has had to go back into hospital as there have been further complications. The horrific accident has been shown television and is truly stomach turning.

Wet and Cold in Sheffield - 15/07/07

The organisers of the Track meeting in Sheffield were unlucky with the weather as it was wet and cold. This put paid to fast times for the sprinters. However, Kenenisa Bekele is back on form and was seemingly unperturbed by the conditions or his competitiors as he ran an amazing time of 7:26.96, which is a British All-comers record. Andy Baddeley set a new PB in the 1500 m with 3:34.74 and beat some very good runners into the bargain, chief among them Bernard Lagat. Hattie Dean set a new British Record in the 3000 m Steeplechase and Nicola Sanders took a fine win in the 400 m. Rebecca Lyne, racing for the first time since last summer, was found wanting for speed over the last 300 m in the 800 m. This was nevertheless a step forward, being back competing again. The Swedes enjoyed a good evening with Magnus Arvidsson winning the Javelin (84.74 m) and Kajsa Bergqvist the High Jump clearing 1.95 m in difficult conditions. Carolina Klüft took part in the 100 m Hurdles and ran a fine 13.31, though quite a way off the in-form Michelle Perry. The anticipated showdown between Jeremy Warriner and Oscar Pistorius never materialised as Jeremy stumbled out of the starting blocks and then stopped running.

Photographs from Buxton Carnival 5-Mile Race - 14/07/07

Mick Hall from Staffs Moorlands was at the race taking photographs. Please visit Mick's website to view and order photographs.

Preliminary Results of Buxton Carnival 5-Mile Race - 14/07/07

These are the preliminary results of the Carnival 5-Mile race. I apologise for any typos or spelling errors that might have crept in. Please drop me an email if you spot any errors.

Brief Results of Buxton Carnival 5-Mile Race - 14/07/07

The weather on Friday was truly awful, with more than an inch of rain. The prospects for Saturday were also bleak. However, the weather turned for the better, with a breeze and eventually balmy sunshine. In fact, some of the runners were definitely overheating on the climbs and the drinks station by Parks Inn, manned by Louisa and Alan Ramsay, was much appreciated. Winner of the Men's race was evergreen Bashir Hussain of Stockport Harriers. Brian Cole of Royal Marines AC and Darren Washington of Boalloy RC finished second and third, respectively. Stockport Harriers clinched the Men's team prize, with all four counters in the top eight. Charnwood AC's Clare McKittrick returned to Buxton to win the race for a second time. It brought me extra pleasure as Clare is an old training buddy of mine. Kerry Marchant, representing Staffordshire Moorlands AC, finished second just ahead of Buxton AC's Wendy Higginbottom. Wendy Higginbottom, Emma Wharton and Annemarie Claye ensured that the Women's team prize stayed in Buxton. The full results will be posted on the website as soon as I have typed them up.

British Youth Sprinters Excel in Ostrava - 12/07/07

Asha Philip and Ashlee Nelson finished first and third in the 100 m final at the World Youth Tarck & Field Championships in Ostrava. Ashlee Nelson followed in her older brother Alex's footsteps, by taking a medal.

This Week's Junior Awards - 12/07/07

Leo Dearden and Jordan Mellor were the recipients of this awards for their efforts during this week's training. Well done, Jordan and Leo.

Buxton Carnival 5-Mile Road Race [14/07/07] - 11/07/07

You can enter the race on the day. Registration starts at 12:00 at the St John Ambulance Hall off Holker Road. Entry fee on the day £6 (England Athletics affiliated club runners) and £8 (Unattached or non-England Athletics affiliated club runners). We hope to see you all in Buxton on Saturday.

Terry Fowler Clinches a Bronze at the Midland Vets Track & Field Championships - 11/07/07

Terry Fowler competed in the Midland Vets Championships at Alxander Park a few weeks back. He finished fourth in the 100 m and 200 m. However, it is with great pleasure I announce that Terry has since been elevated to third place and received his medal yesterday. Well done, Terry!

Excellent Running by Buxtonians at Fenton Park - 11/07/07

There were excellent performances posted by our runners at the third Stoke City Parks race at Longton Park last night. Kyle Fowler won the U15 Boys' race over 2 km in a very convincing fashion (okay, so Kyle's representing Staffs Moorlands now). Kyle leads overall with one more race. Zoe Bayley competed in the U15 Girls race, also over 2 km, and did well, though I can't give her exact finishing position. Zoe was second overall before the race (and I reckon Zoe's still in second place). Bradley Fowler ran an absolute blinder in the U11 Boys 2 km race. He was in third place overall in his ahe category before the race. Terry Fowler was our sole representative in the Senior and Vet's race over 5 km. Terry was third overall before the race and I think he consolidated that position with a fine performance. Terry's time was around 19:31 and I reckon he finished around 25th. Well done, boys and girl! The last race is held in Hanley Park on Tuesday 15 August.

Brief Results of the Lausanne Grand Prix - 10/07/07

There were some good performances at the Gala in Lausanne tonight. Nicola Sanders ran 51.84 s over 400 m. Jemma Simpson finished just outside 2 minutes in the 800 m (2:00.19). The Swedish duo of Carolina Klüft and Susanna Kallur showed that they are rounding into form at just about the right time. Carolina won the long jmup with a 6.84 m leap and beat Eunice Barber and Tatyana Lebedeva into the bargain! Susanna came second in the 100 m hurdles behind Michelle Perry with 12.62 s. Marlon Devonish is inching closer to the magical 10-second mark, with a fine second place and 10.06 s (with +1.3 m s-1 tailwind). It can only be a matter of time before Marlon ducks under 10 seconds. Mark Lewis-Francis is still searching for his best form and managed a modest 10.27 s clocking (modest by his own very high standards!). Tim Benjamin is racing himself into form, with a 46.04 s in the 400 m. Liu Xiang suffered a rare defeat last week, but was back on form again when he won in 13.01 s. Stefan Holm won the high jump with 2.28 m, a height that Tomáš Janku and Thomas Donald also cleared. Linus Törnblad was equal third with Germain Mason on 2.24 m.

Results of the 1-Mile Race - 10/07/07

Buxton Community School and Buxton & District Athletic Club promoted the second 1-Mile race for junior (and not-so-young) runners on Saturday 7 July 2007. The turn-out was good with 75 finishers. The Overall winners were Chris Rushworth and Jessie Twentyman. Please click here for the full results.

Pride Park Relays [23/07/07] - 09/07/07

Currently, Steven Ramsay, Terry Fowler, Mark Quince and Dave Nutton have expressed an interest in taking part in the Relays, so we have a Men's team. Annemarie Claye is the only Lady that has nailed her colours to the mast so far. Are there any Ladies out there who would like to take part in an excellent Relay? Please see me, Stefan, as soon as possible, and no later than Wednesday 11 July. Closing date for entries is on Friday 13 July.

Very Brief Update on the Weekend's Results - 09/07/07

Geoff Whitehead and Andy Wilton took part in Wetton 10 km road race in the Manifold Valley on Saturday. This is a family website so I cannot relate Geoff's comments verbatim. However, I can confirm that Geoff found the course really tough! Andy Wilton won the race and set a new Vet's course record with a time in the region of 36 minutes, which gives you an idea of the severity of the course. Geoff's time was about 44 minutes. Meanwhile in Peak Forest, the Peak Forest fell race was held on Sunday. Wendy Higginbottom won the Ladies race and came 14th overall. Mark Quince came 36th and was quite content. I know that Annemarie and Steve Claye and Don O'Brien also took part, but I do not know how they got on. More details to follow.

Chris Tomlinson Sets New National Long Jump Record - 07/07/07

Chris Tomlinson may have flattered to deceive in the past. However, he nevertheless have held the National Long Jump record since 2002. A record he took from the legendary Lynn Davies. Chris added another 2 cm today to take the record to 8.29 m. This promises well for the World Championships in Osaka in seven weeks time.

Early Warning of the Gun Run [17/07/07] - 07/07/07

The Gun Run is held on Tuesday 17 July, with a 19:15 start from the Swythamley and Heaton Centre. The race which is over 5.8 miles with 700 feet of climbing (CS-rated) is run over trails, then tracks and finishes on the road. Colin and other interested Gun Runners are leaving the Railway car park at 18:00. If you fancy a leg stretcher, then the Gun Run is just the tonic.

Brief Results from Paris Golden League Gala - 07/07/07

Sweden's Christian Olsson won the Triple Jump with a 17.56 m jump. Tim Benjamin was 7th in the 400 m with a time of 46.23 s. I assume that the weather was unkind to the athletes as Tim is capable of running much quicker times than that. Tero Pitkämäki of Finland launched the javelin a might 89.70 m to win by over 3 m from Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway. Yelena Soboleva of Russia won the 1500 m with another sub-4 minute time, if only just (3:59.91). Michelle Perry won the 100 m Hurdles with 12.56 s, just ahead of Sweden's Susanna Kallur in 12.68 s. Blanka Vlašic of Croatia won the High Jump with 2.02 m and Russian Yelena Isinbayeva cleared 4.91 in the Pole Vault to win by 0.2 m from Svetlana Feofanova, her team mate. My theory about the weather being inclement is probably true as Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba won the 5000 m in 15:21 which is a very modest time for her.

Brief Recap of the 30th Anniversary Celebrations - 07/07/07

We had a cracking evening in the Railway on Saturday 30 June, when we celebrated the Club's 30th Anniversary. Four of the founding members attended the party, Chris Bent, Jim Bradley, Pat Grundy and Norman Taylor. There were loads of photographs of club members, past and present. A BIG Thank You to Emma Wharton who organised the whole event, with a little help from Nigel Critchlow. A BIG Thank You to all thos who hedlped collating the photographs and lend us the photographs and paper clippings. Finally also a BIG THhank You to the Railway for putting a lovely buffet. Please visit our Photo Gallery for a group photo.

Buxton Carnival 5-Mile Road Race is Imminent - 07/07/07

I woiuld like to remind you that the Carnival 5-mile road race is being held next Saturday, 14 July. The race starts ar 13:50 near the SPring Gardnes car park. I am hoping we might get slightly better weather than of late, but cannot promise anything.

Club Commmittee Meeting on Wednesday [11/07/07] - 07/07/07

We are holding a very short Club Commmittee meeting on Wednesday 11 July in the Railway. The start time is 20:15. There is only one topic on the agenda and that is to discuss the Carnival race.

Tour de France comes to Town - 07/07/07

I know this is a Running Website, but I must nevertheless bring to your attention the fact that the Tour de France starts today, with a 5-mile individual time trial. This is the first time the race has started on British soil. It is an amazing, colourful race! Bradley Wiggins and David Millar are the two main domestic challengers for the Yellow Jersey, to be worn by the leader of the race, on the first day.

Rick Houghton Strikes Gold at Chrome Hill - 07/07/07

Rick Houghton took a fine win at the Chrome Hill fell race a little while ago. He held off a challenge from Jon Batt, formerly of Buxton AC but now plying his trade for Dark Peak Fell Runners. Rick won the Bill Moss Memorial Fell Race in April and have been running very well over all surfaces. Rich ran a storming race at the Buxton Half Marathon where he finished fourth, just behind Malcolm Fowler! Well done, Rick. I do not have any information how other Buxtonians might have fared at Chrome Hill, byt will keep you update you with the results when I have them.

Reminder of the 1-mile Race today - 07/07/07

The Buxton Community School and Buxton & District Athletic Club are promoting another 1-mile race to be held today, Saturday 7 July. The race is held on Temple Fields and starts at 10:00. General Tidy-Up of the Website - 07/07/07

I have tidied up the website, moving old news items to the News from 2007 page. You will now also find a new link to that page. I have updated all other web pages to reflect this change.

Britons Do Well in Athens and Watford - 02/07/07

Marlon Devonish's excellent form continues as he ran 10.09 s for the 100 m tonight in Athens. This time he had to settle for second place as Atkins Derrick of Bahamas set a new national record with 9.95 s. Marilyn Okoro dipped under 2 minutes, with 1:59.63 clocking, in a tight finish in the Women's 800 m race. Meanwhile Yelena Soboleva of Russia ran 3:58.3 in the 1500 m; this is possibly the world leading time this year. Brave Jo Pavey was rewarded with a new PB when she recorded a time of 31:26.98 over 10,000 m at a wet and miserable meet at Watford on Sunday. Not only did Jo improve her best time by 54 seconds, she also achieved the qualifying time for the World Championships in Osaka in August!

Johan Wissman Hits Top form - 02/07/07

Sweden's Johan Wissman erased a six-year old national record when he ran 45.12 for the 400 m at MAI Galan tonight. That was 0.42 s faster than Jimisola Laursen's old mark. This was the 14th fastest run over 400 m in the world this year. Johan has been sniffing at the Swedish 200 m record too. Johan was quoted as not having had perfect race so I wonder if a sub-45 clocking might be on the cards. This is a bit show of strength after the dressing down Swedish Athletics received in AW last week. I do not necessarily disagree with the sentiments in the article, because I think the Swedish model had been haussed up. Nevertheless, I think the Swedes must be doing something right.

Results recap of the Weekend - 02/07/07

We may have celebrated on Saturday night, but a large number of runners were competing on Sunday. Mark Quince travelled over to Mansfield for the Stars and Stripes Half Marathon, where he finished 238th with a time of 1:39:39. Sophie Quince, Mark's daughter, was bowled over on the startline when a burly and brusque senior runner positioned himself on the line. Unperturbed, young Sophie ran very well and recorded a time of 13:38 (to be confirmed)over the 1.8 miles. The Bakewell Pudding Race also took place on the Sunday. I do not have the official times, but have had a brief report from Emma. Lloyd Taggart was third, while Jackie Lee was first Lady. However, that is all I can remember. I will bring you the results soon.

30th Anniversary Celebrations - 02/07/07

We had a cracking evening in the Railway celebrating the 30 anniversary of the club. Norman Taylor, our Club President, kept us entertained with a trip down memory lane. Chris Bent, who started the club all those years ago, attended the party with his family. There were loads of photographs of runners both past and present. A good time was had by all. A big Thank You to Emma Wharton for organising the event. A big Thank You to those who contributed with photographs and helped prepare the photo boards.

Geoff Whitehead Crawled in Cressbrook - 16/05/07

Geoff Whitehead enjoyed the hospitality and the course at Cressbrook, the Cressbrook Crawl which is organised by Bruce Dawson, a chum of mine. Geoff finished 24th with a time of 53:22, pipping Mick Moorhouse of Matlock AC by a couple of seconds.

Mark Cudahy on a Hike - 16/05/07

Mark Cudahy had a very good run at the Fellsman Hike in Yorkshire, a mere 61 miles(!) over moors and peat. Mark's time was in the region of 13:45 and he finished in the top 10, Joanne reports. Well done, Mark.

Buxton Athletes at the County Track and Field Championships - 16/05/07

This year the County Champs were held at Moorways Stadium in Derby. The weather was fairly dry, but breezy on Saturday. The Sunday started damp and got wetter. In the middle of Sunday afternoon, the track was being flooded due to the incessant rain. Terry Fowler took two golds and one silver in the 100 m, 400 m and long jump in the Vets events, setting personal bests in both the long sprint and the long jump. Emma Bayley took bronze in the Triple Jump, 200 m and the 300 m Hurdles in the U17 Women age group. Gemma Carruthers took silver in the U17 Women 200 m. Verity Burt took Bronze in the U20 Women's 800 m, while younger sister Rachel took a well-earned bronze in the U17W 3000 m and also lowered her PB by 15 seconds. Jenny Jackson took silver in the U17W and also took a whopping 20 s off her PB. Kyle Fowler took a bronze in the U17M 3000 m and Steven Ramsay took a bronze in the U20M 3000 m. Kyle Fowler finished fourth in the U17M 1500 m but had the consolation of improving his PB by over 5 seconds. Our U17W 4x100 m team consisting of Gemma Carruthers, Zoe Bayley, Jenny Jackson and Emma Bayley ran a brilliant race to finish 2nd in the their age group. The Ladies also performed a very quick time of 56.40, which was a 3 second improvement. Chris Rushworth found the pace too hot to handle in both the U15B 800 m and 1500 m, but was rewarded with a a 4 second improvement on his PB in the 800 m. Well done to all athletes who competed so well.

Brief Results from Stoke City Parks Race 1 - 16/05/07

The first of four City Parks races took place a week ago. The Buxton juniors and Terry Fowler performed very well. Kyle Fowler set a new course record over 2 km with 6:05. Zoe Bayley came second and Katie ? fifth in the U15 girls race, also over 2 km. Jenny Jackson and Elicia ? came first and third in the U17 Women's race over 3 km. Jamie Fitzgerald was fifth in the U17 Men's race. Bradley Fowler finished Terry Fowler was 4th in the MV40 category and took a nearly a minute off his previous best time. Well done to all athletes

Brief Results from Three Peaks Fell Race - 03/05/07

Mark Cudahy took part in the gruelling Three Peaks race last Sunday. The going is usually really boggy, but I suspect it would have been quite firm going this time. Mark recorded 3:52:00 for the 23 miles and was very pleased with the time and his finishing position, 101st. The amazing Rob Jebb of Bingley Harriers won the race yet again. Rob's the only competitor to have won both the foot race and the cyclo cross race in the same year, I think. Well done, Mark.

It is a long way to Edale - 03/05/07

Tour of Combs [02/05/07] - 23/04/07

Colin is organising a Tour of Combs on Wednesday 2 May. It's about nine miles, and quite flat once you are up on the plateau itself. Colin reckons it will be a run of about 90 minutes. It is a lovely run, with spectacular views over Combs at the far end of the plateau.

Results of Sheffield 10 km - 23/04/07

Matt Thomson and Steve Claye travelled east to Sheffield to take part in Sheffield 10 km. Mat finished 27th in 39:09, with Steve only two places and 16 seconds behind. Steve finished 3rd in the MV50 category. Both Matt and Steve are on the way back after a layoffs. I fully expect that these times will be shaved significantly in the near future.

Personal Bests Galore in London - 22/04/07

The weather conditions in London during the Marathon was almost certainly more appreciated by the spectators than by the runners as the temperature soared to 21 °C. However, this did not mean that the times posted by our intrepid Buxton AC runners were any slower than last year. In fact, quite the opposite! Wendy Higginbottom and Emma Wharton both posted new PBs for the distance; Wendy took over five minutes off her previous best time and Emma improved by roughly three minutes. I am not sure whether Dave Nutton and Terry Chigwedere might have got close to their PBs. There were the times: Wendy Higginbottom - 3:23:24, Dave Nutton - 3:24:12, Emma Wharton - 3:26:42, Nigel Critchlow - 3:27:58, Mark Quince - 3:53:23 and Terry Chigwedere - 4:50:14. Nigel and Mark might have opened at too fast a pace and consequently suffered in the latter stages. However, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Well done, everyone! Splendid efforts all round! Please click on the link for the London Marathon splits.

Results of Lads Leap Fell Race - 22/04/07

The Lads Leap race was held last Sunday. Don O'Brien was our sole representative in 31st place. Don's time was 54:47; such is the standard in the Vet's categories that Don finished 5th, despite a high finishing position. Lloyd Taggart of Dark Peak FR won the race by over 4.5 minutes. Jackie Lee was not to be outdone by boyfriend and won the ladies race by almost the same margin. My chum Simon Coldrick finished a very creditable 6th!

Goyts Moss Fell Race [23/05/07] - 19/04/07

Mark Fitzgerald, one of the organisers of the Goyts Moss race, would like to remind everybody that the Goyts Moss race is the first race of three races in the Goyt Valley Series. The other races being the Shining Tor race (25/07/07) and Windgather race (21/10/07).

Then There Five! FLM Update - 19/04/07

I erroneously said that only four Buxton AC runners are taking part in the Flora London Marathon. There are in fact five AC runners, namely Emma Wharton, Wendy Higginbottom, Nigel Critchlow, Mark Quince and, last but not least, Dave Nutton. Apologies to Dave for missing him out in earlier.

Results of Kinder Downfall Fell Race - 18/04/07

The Kinder Downfall race is part of the Hayfield Series and is a lovely run over 10 miles with 2500 feet of climbing. Buxton AC was represented by three runners, who did very well. Don O'Brien finished 64th with 1:27:20, Colin Wilshaw finished 15 places behind Don and recorded a time of 1:30:11, which is an improvement of over 2 and half minutes. Simon Corbett is back racing and finished 130th with 1:38:11.

Preliminary Results of the Club Fell Race - 16/04/07

The turnout was slightly disappointing as Easter break and an abundance of other races meant that only eight runners took part in the senior race and only one junior toed the line in the junior race. In the junior race, James Rushworth put in a good effort and kept going even though he was on his own. The going was exceedingly good, with very firm conditions underfoot. Steven Ramsay who won the October version of the race was away and this blew the race wide open. Rich Houghton set a new course record and saw off a determined challenge from Matt Thomson on a glorious sunny day. Jamie Fitgerald, one of our promising juniors, clinched third spot, ahead of Steve Claye, who is coming back after a long lay-off. Chris Rushworth, another promising junior, worked hard and managed to keep Malcolm Stubbs behind him to finish fifth and sixth, respectively. First lady home was Annemarie Claye, who scored maximum points in the Championship, ahead of Jackie Morson. A big Thank You to Jim and Sheila Bradley, who organised the race, and to our marshalls, Marina Hartley, Arthur Gratton, Nick Stone, Graham Morson, Brian Goddard, who ensures that all runners stayed on course. I don't have the times, but will post these as soon as they are available.

London Marathon is Almost Upon Us [22/04/07] - 16/04/07

We have four runners in this year's London Marathon. Emma Wharton, Wendy Higginbottom, Mark Quince and Nigel Critchlow are stretching their legs in this most colourful of UK races. Mark Fitzgerald, Lloyd Taggart and Jackie Lee travelled to Isle of Man to take part in the 31 mile run and 8000 ft of climbing from the Northern to the Southern end of the island. Lloyd and Jackie are both running very well and won their respective races easily; both set new course records/ Lloyd took 17 minutes of the men's record and Jackie took 39 minutes off the ladies record. Mark Fitzgerald came 83rd in 7:36. Well done, lass and lads.

Phil finished 324th out of 557 finishers with a time of 46:12. Well done to all who took part!

Correction of Entry Form for Buxton Buxton Half Marathon - 09/04/07

Excellent Performances by Young and Old Buxton AC runners - 06/04/07

A number of track PBs have already fallen this year, even though we are only just into April. Kyle Fowler (U17M) set a new PB over 3000 m with 9:47.6 at the recent Blackpool Open Meeting. Kyle then followed this up with a fabulous 9:27.8 at Stoke the other night. Steven Ramsay (U17M) is also taking gigantic strides in the 3000 m, when he made up for a disappointing run at Blackpool with a 9:52.1 clocking at the Stoke meeting; that is Steven's first sub-10 minute clocking. In the U15G, Jenny Jackson's excellent form continues as she achieved a Grade 4 time over 3000 m with 11:45, again at the recent Stoke meeting. New girl, Gemma Carruthers demolished the opposition in the 200 m in the combined Junior Women, U17W and U15G race. Gemma clocked 29.8 s off no training. Old Boy Terry Fowler set a new PB over 200 m with 25.7 s and 10:57.9 in the 3000 m at the Stoke meeting. More details and comprehensive results to follow. Well done, everybody!

Club Championships 2007 - 06/04/07

All of you should have received a mailshot containing, amongst other things, the list of dates for this year's Club Championships. The format has changed in that we are making use of our own club races, partly because it reduces the amount of travelling and partly as an experiment. We will evaluate the experiment at the end of the year. Please note that you can choose any half-marathon or full marathon. The only proviso is that the race must be held on or before 30 November 2007. This is so that we can present the trophies to the winners at our Christmas do. The format of the championships and the complete set of Club Championship races can be found on our Club Championship page or in our recent mailshot.

Buxton & District AC's Website is Online Again - 05/04/07

I am very happy to announce that the website is once again up and running. The downtime was due to both the computer and I contracting viruses, though not the same ones you understand. I will try to provide a lot of new information, especially regarding the two road races organised by the club, namely Buxton Half Marathon and Buxton Carnival 5-mile race. Thank you all for being patient. I hope to make it worth your wait.

Kyle Fowler, U16, made his debut over five miles and finished 2nd in his age group, 146th overall, with a time of 30:02 (official). Terry Fowler, Kyle's father, started brightly and faded ever so slightly in the last mile to finish 295th with 33:46. Emma Wharton was our sole female representative; Emma posted a time of 34:30 and finished in 343rd place. Prolific racer, Simon Moorhouse, finished 537th with a time of 38:22. Andy Wilton was stretching his legs and showed good form, when he finished 50th with 26:23, though Andy is still building up for his defence of the BMAF 5km National Championship title in June. Results of Lamb's Longer Leg and More - 15/01/07

The club had three brave souls toeing the line on a very windy and nippy morning. My source tells me that all the runners were huddled up like penguins to extract a bit of warmth from the their fellow fell mates at the start! Geoff Whitehead was first Buxtonian back in 33:10 (15 s quicker than last year), which earned him 43rd place. Don O'Brien followed closely behind in 52nd place with a time of 33:49. Colin Wilshaw was 72nd in 36:17, but I believe that Col rode his bike out to the start which must be worth a good couple of minutes, I am sure. It turned out to a a family double with Lloyd Taggart winning the men's race with a comfortable cushion of 1:34, while Jackie Lee took the honours in the ladies race by an even wider margin of 1:55 to the second placed runner. Also running was Nick Stone, a regular at our Wednesday sessions, who finished in 73rd place with 36:28, just behind big Col. Meanwhile back at base, a group of intrepid runners embarked on a 20 mile run in preparation for London Marathon and High Peak '40'. A good time was had by all!

Update of Upcoming Fell Races - 11/01/07

I have amended and added races to our Upcoming Races page, please visit the page and select your races. I have had a first pass of the fell races most of which are local but I have also included some Lakeland Classics and other classical fell races further afield. I have concentrated on the races held in the first half of the year. The list will be further extended, i.e. to cover the whole year. I make no guarantees as to the accuracy of the information. Please check with the FRA Fixtures Calendar, the FRA website and/or the race organiser for the latest up-to-date information. I will add track and road races in the very near future.

Excellent Performances at the County Championships - 10/01/07

The Buxton contingent acquitted themselves very well at the County Cross Country Championships at the weekend. Both our teams in the U13G race came home with medals as the teams finished second and third respectively; Amy Mellor finished an excellent third with Elle Twentyman and Jade Hill in support! Jessie Twentyman, Louisa Ramsay and Lia Hodgkinson took the Bronze medals. The U13 Boys teams finished 5th, with Alex Airey, Ryan Sircar and Luke Addison. The incomplete U13B team was madeup of Khem Sattaur and Jordan Carrington. Jenny Jackson and Zoe Bayley competed well in the U15G races where they finished 8th and 9th, respectively. The U15B team won Bronze medals, led by Kyle Fowler and ably supported by Jack Gregory and Adam Sattaur. The Burt sisters, Verity and Rachel, ran in the U17W race where they finshed ninth and 12th, respectively. The U17M's team was led home by Steven Ramsay, closely followed by Paul Murray and Carl Riley; also running but without team backup was Matt Ashby. The Senior and Veteran Ladies competition saw the Buxton Belles clinching a fine third place with Wendy Higginbottom, Emma Wharton and Sarah Nicholson; Wendy also came third in the Veteran's race. Mark Quince and Terry Fowler were the sole representatives in the Senior and Veteran men's race, with three places and 1:09 difference between them. Andy Wilton finished fifth overall and first veteran. Steve Watson competed in the Lancashire County Champs at Blackburn, where he finished 21st overall and fourth in the MV40 category. A number of our athletes have been selected to compete for Derbyshire in the Inter-Counties in Wollaton Park in February. Congratulations to all medal winners and to all those who took part. Please visit the DCAA website for the full results of the Cross Country Championships.

The venue is Ashfield School, Sutton Road, Kirby-in-Ashfield, NG17 8HP.

Travel Arrangements for the County XC Champs [07/01/06] - 03/01/07

We have booked a coach to take us to Sutton-in-Ashfield where this year's County Cross Country Championships are held. The Championships are held on Saturday 6 January. The coach will leave Buxton Community School, by the sportshall on Temple Road, at 08:30 and will return after the last race. The cost is a very reasonable £5 per person. Remember to bring water-proofs, warm clothing, including hat and gloves, food and drink. It's likely to be wet and cold.

Swaledale Marathon [07/06/09] - 03/01/07

A large contingent of Buxton runners travelled to Swaledale in North Yorkshire last June to take part in Swaledale Marathon. The race is very enjoyable and scenic. The terrain is hilly and the surface varies between moorland, tarmac, gravel path and grass. A number of us stayed overnight in a camping barn and had a whale of a time. The race is likely to be over-subscribed so we need to get our entry forms in earlier rather than later. Jayne Denby has spare entry forms for whose who need them. It is also possible to enter online, or at least print off the form from their website: URI: Swaledale Marathon. The race is held on Saturday 9 June 2007.

A New Year has Dawned - 03/01/07

I would like to take the opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year. I hope all of you have survived the Christmas and New Year period, avoiding gluttony, laziness, colds and injuries. We have a new year ahead of us and I'm very excited about the prospects for the club members in various races. The first opportunity to show how well we have wintered will be the County Cross Country Championships on Saturday, but see post above for travel arrangements.
