The Buxton Carnival '5' - Saturday 14 July 2012

This year's race will take place on Saturday 14 July 2012. The race starts at 13.50 near the car park behind Spring Gardens shopping centre and finishes on High Street, just in front of the Vault. Registration will take place in University of Derby hall of residence behind the Railway pub. The course remains the same as last year, with testing long uphill sections and long downhill sections that will result in fatigue in the quadriceps.

The entry fee is £6.00/£8.00 for UKA affiliated/unattached runners; £3.00 for Juniors/O60s/Job Seekers. The race limit is 250. Entries will be taken on the day, numbers permitting, at an additional fee of £2.00.

Route Description - New Route Map

Phil Leigh has kindly mapped out the route of the Carnival 5-mile road race using the mapmyrun site. Please click on Carnival 5 Route. I think you might be able to download it to a GPS (though you might have to be a paying subscriber). Anyway, enjoy! Pretty clever technology, this t'internet and mapping, like! However, please be aware that the back-button on your browser might not work properly.

Start: Near Spring Gardens car park;
turn right at the roundabout on Bridge Street;
Turn right at the roundabout near the Railway Hotel;
Run past the crowds lining Spring Gardens pedestrianised road;
Turn right at the end of Spring Gardens;
Turn left at the roundabout at the top of the Quadrant;
Follow St John Road up to Burbage traffic light (steady climb), where the road changes name to Leek Road;
Continue climbing on Leek Road until you reach Ladmanlow (The last bit is steep-ish);
Turn left towards Harpur Hill - beware the 1 in 7 dip just before you get to Harpur Hill;
Turn left at the Parks Inn pub, and follow Harpur Hill Road all the way down to London Road (A515);
Turn left onto London Road, climb the short and testing hill;
Follow London Road all the way down to Fiveways traffic lights;
Carry on across the junction onto High Street (Now is the time to start thinking about picking the pace up);
Finish: Near the traffic lights by the Vault;
Stay around Market Place and watch the Buxton Carnival go past.
