Buxton Half Marathon
Entry Form
Online Registration
Buxton Carnival '5'
Three of our runners travelled to Alsager yesterday to take part in one of the fastest 5-mile road races in the country. The runners treated the race as a leg stretcher in their build-up to London Marathon in April. This is how they got on: 308. Emma Wentworth - 35:15, 341. Roland Meylan - 35:49 and 430. Simon Moorhouse - 37:47. 948 runners completed the course. The weather was crisp and conducive to fast times. Well done, Emma, Roly and Simon.
There were a couple of factual errors and a non-working link on the half marathon page. These errors have now been rectified. Many thanks to Simon Moorhouse for pointing these out to me. Please let me know if any other mistakes have slipped through.
Lomas Distribution Buxton Half Marathon will be held on Sunday 6 June 2010 this year. Thus we are back to the early June date of a few years ago. You can download the entry form by following the link Buxton Half Marathon 2010 Entry Form. Alternatively, you can enter the race on line. Just click Buxton Half Marathon 2010 Online Entry, enter your details, pay and your are in! We are very grateful for Lomas Distribution's continued race sponsorship - this will the third year they sponsor the race. I have updated the half marathon page so the information should be correct.
It is a new year and the subscriptions for 2010 are due. The annual subscription is a very reasonable £17, cash or cheque made payable to Buxton AC. Please pay your subscription to either Sheila Bradley or Kirsty Ormerod. The ladies would be very grateful if you could pay the subscription by 28 February 2010 at the latest.
Tracey and Brent Greenway took part in the recent Cannock Chase Trig Pont Race. Brent recounts the experience: "Just thought that I'd let you know I have just completed the Cannock Chase Trig Point Race. It is a 15 mile with 1500ft climb race but it was shortened to 12 miles due to the weather conditions which in the end were fine so it was a good decision to go forward. It is really well organised, well marshalled, with drink stations, and soup, tea and cakes at the finish that never run out. The race goes through Cannock Chase on wide trails. It is a navigation race with lot's of options but there's plenty of people around to follow, I think I ended up taking a couple of poor options but some good ones too so I don't feel hard done by. It is at a great time in the year to get some undulating miles in and I will definitely do it next year and recommend it for anyone to get back into racing for the New Year. I did 1:56:26 coming 88th out of 144 finishers. Tracey ran a blinder coming 21st overall, 2nd lady but first vet 45 1:36:16. (Tracey ran under Ilkley as it was a fell race). Sat in front of the fire now, shot to bits but happy." Well done, Tracey and Brent.
Rob White travelled all the way to Milton Keynes to take part in a 5 km race. Rob finished second with a time of 17:48. A very good start to the new year.
We had decent sized team travelling to Witton PArk in Blackburn to take part in the Northern Cross Country Championships. The results were as follows: U13 Girls: 68. Jessica Grindey, 104. Sophie Quince, 144. Lauren Ashmore (211 finishers), U13 Boys: 160. Thomas Drabble (184 finishers), U17 Men: 102. Chris Rushworth (Macc Harriers), Senior Women: 139. Emma Wharton , Senior Men: 248. Paul Drabble, 365. Simon Harden, Mark Quince, Paul Wells. Excellent performances throughout from our athletes. Blasts from the past: Kat Farquhar, an old training buddy of mine, was 45th in the Senior Women's race; Martin Roscoe (I competed against him when I was a student) was 43rd, while Carl Thackary (Hallamshire Harriers - one time winner of Buxton Carnival 5-mile road race) finished 92nd. Do not forget, next weekend sees the running of the postponed Derbyshire County Cross Country Championships.
The Derbyshire County Cross Country Championships will be held on 30 January 2010. It is likely that the Championships will be held at Markeaton Park, but this has not yet been confirmed. All those who entered for the original date are of course still entered, unless you have withdrawn your entry. The organisers will not accept new entries for this year's championships.
I have decided to cancel tomorrow's session due to the state of the paths and pavements. It is thawing merrily as I write this, but I feel it is prudent await better conditions underfoot. Sincere Apologies! I hope things can be back to normal on 21 January.
Ros Barratt is seriously considering to book a camping barn for the weekend of the Swaledale Marathon. Please can anyone interested in staying at the barn contact Ros as soon as possible. Accommodation is in short supply. Also, the race is full already.
Sarah Guise is giving a discount on sports massage to all club members and their families during January 2010. The cost of a session is £20. The price will be £30 from February 2010. Sarah is also offering a £5 discount on the next full price session for client referral. Please contact Sarah to make an appointment.
I have the pleasure to announce that the 2010 Fell Calendar has arrived. My copy arrived yesterday. Your copy should arrive in the very near future, if it hasn't already landed on your doormat. I will attempt to update our upcomg races page during the weekend. Thank you for your patience.
The organisers have been forced to postpone the Derbyshire County Cross Country Championships this Saturday 9 January. They will try to run the races another weekend, but no new date has been announced. Cheques submitted with the entry form have not been cashed and will be returned in the (unlikely) case the Championships will not be held this year, according to the Derbyshire County Athletic Association's website. I will bring you an update when I know more.
I have decided to cancel this Friday night's speed session, due to the conditions underfoot. It is just too snowy to be of much benefit. I suggest a steady run instead from where you live instead.
The Northern Cross Country Championships are held at Witton Park in Blackburn on Saturday 23 January 2010. The club is organising a bus to the race. Please can anyone interested in travelling on the bus let Mark Quince know as soon as possible.
Two hardy souls braved the weather conditions to take part in Woodbank Park 5 km race. Kyle Fowler won the race with a fine 16:54 clocking, while father Terry was eight with 21:12. I have no report on the conditions underfoot, but would guess it was quite slippery.
Sheila Bradley sends the following report from the New Year Celebrations at Edale organised by Ros Barratt: What a time was had by all! Great food, great company, and a great couple of days, courtesy Ros who came up with the mad idea of spending New Year's Eve in a youth hostel - mad enough to appeal to 23 of us, so perhaps not quite so mad after all, and it turned out to be a fantastic way to spend New Year.
A few of us (me, Jim, Suicide & Annemarie, plus Sid & Lucy - see Lucy posing below) met early in the day and had a snowy trek from the youth hostel towards Edale and part way along the Pennine Way, before heading back to Edale and an obligatory pub stop where, coincidentally, Ros & her family had decided to walk to on their arrival in Edale. Coincidence or just a group of alcoholics?! Louisa & her 'extra' party of 12 or so mid-teens were arriving at Edale Rail Station after we'd returned to the youth hostel and Ros fretted her way back there wondering whether they'd have on appropriate footwear (they didn't), torches (not a chance) and whether they'd find the youth hostel (they did, well they turned up so their geography can't be that bad!).
Everyone went to enormous lengths to prepare & bring wonderful food - chili con carne, thai green curry, salsa wraps, mushroom soup, tons of lovely salady things, a host of delicious puddings - and, importantly, enough alcohol to sink 2 battleships, never mind 1. Party games, charades, table tennis and many other daft games, especially Suicide's singing charades (you had to be there), sped us towards midnight and the witching hour - counted down loudly and positively by Gentleman Jim (MY watch is right, he insisted) and celebrated with the required amount of fizzy stuff. The Rushworth family did us proud with their contribution of the daft games - and gamely took part too, so we all acted & looked daft at the same time.
Despite promises of an early (7am!) run over Kinder, there was no evidence to suggest anyone actually left their beds much before breakfast started around 9 - and there were definitely no new footsteps in the snow (see Jim below gritting the paths on the day we arrived - he must have been a scout in his youth - not only did he bring a snow shovel but a bag of grit too!). Well, would you have got out of a nice warm bunk after a night on the ale? No doubt some couldn't quite make it down from the top bunks . . . .
Breakfast was a busy affair - the youth hostel was pretty full and other 'self-caterers' selfishly got up just before us and hogged the facilities for a short while - no matter, there was some more fine fare waiting for us to scoff - pancakes, croissants, brioche, cereals, toast, smoked salmon & scrambled egg - when does that New Year diet start? Great team effort went into the catering and, have to say, the washing up - even the teenagers, after a few gentle hints!
Debbie ably led the group on a wonderful winter walk from the youth hostel after breakfast, heading along the mid reaches of the valley towards Win Hill, with plenty of stops for the youngsters (OK, and some of the more mature of the group) to have snowball fights, skid perilously across icy ponds and generally be teenagers, plus a few snack breaks in case of threat of starvation, before we all arrived back at the hostel. Believe it or not, there was a real need for further snacking before the group, reluctantly, went our separate ways - well, there had been a severe snowstorm while we'd been out and you never know what you might encounter on the long trek back to civilisation ......
Thanks especially to Ros for the idea, for the booking, for sorting us out with what food we needed to bring - fantastic idea that went wonderfully well. Thanks to everyone for being such great sports & for a superb couple of days. When's the next outing? Please click on New Year's Celebrations at Edale 2009 to view the lovely photographs, courtesy of Sheila Bradley.
The Fell Calendar is not expected to arrive for a while yet. Brian Shelmerdine, the organiser of the Lamb's Longer Leg Fell Race, has therefore asked me to inform you that the race is pre-entry only! I stress - no entries on the day will be accepted. The race will be held on Sunday 17 January 2010 with an 11:00 start. To enter please send your entry form (a FRA generic form will do) along with a cheque for £ 3 to Brian Shelmerdine, 6 Salisbury Street, Hadfield, Glossop SK13 1NP. I presume you should make the cheque payable to Brian Shelmerdine but he does not say.
We had an excellent turnout at the Christmas Day run. I believe it was the best for quite a few years. We were blessed with snow to make it a truly festive experience. Please click on Christmas Day Run 2009 to view the photographs, courtesy of Sheila Bradley. I seemed to have deleted the original entry on the website. Apologies!
I wish everyone a Happy New Year. I hope you achieve whatever you are aiming for next year. There are not many races over the festive period, but the respite will not be long as the County Cross Country Championships are held on Saturday 9 January 2010 - Markeaton Park is the venue for the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire races.
